A Study on Improvements of Construction and Architecture Fields in the 6th Edition of Korean Decimal Classification (KDC 제6판 건축학 분야의 분류체계 개선방안)

  • Constructions and Architecture fields were divided into Architecture engineering and Architecture in the 5th edition of Korean Decimal Classification (KDC), but those were combined in the 6th edition of KDC published in 2013. The purposes of this study are to find problems and to suggest modifications through comparing and analyzing the 5th and the 6th editions of KDC, Dewey Decimal Classification, Nippon Decimal Classification and Universal Decimal Classification. The necessity of reclassification, a long classification number for History of Architecture and addition of categories of traditional building and architectural engineering are required to improve the 6th edition of KDC and the improvements and modifications of those problems are suggested.

  • This study suggests an improvement and modification plan for KDC's architecture field after comparing and analyzing KDC, DDC, NDC, the Research Field Classification System, and the National S&T Standard Classification System of the National Research Foundation of Korea. This study suggests, through the cooperative study of researchers from classification and those from construction, that it would be better to integrate 610 architecture into 540 architecture engineering and to change the heading of 540 from "Architecture engineering" to "Architecture". The study also newly creates several subdivisions, 540.1 Architecture Plan including its subdivisions, 543.1 Structural Mechanics, and 546.1 Architectural Environment including its subdivisions.

  • In order to strengthen the core competencies of architecture, not only the curriculum should be reorganized practically, but also various extracurricular activities should be developed so that they cultivate various competencies required for architecture accreditation. In this paper, by surveying competency-based curriculum-extracurricular activities convergence educational system established in D university, strategy to increase students' participation in extracurricular activities is proposed. As a result of the questionnaire survey of the students and representatives of the local architectural designers, the programs to enhance student's creativity, such as contest participation and license certification program, were found to be the most effective extracurricular activities which help to develop the learning capability in architect as well.
