Three-dimensional Distribution and Variation of Moisture Content of Boxed-heart Square Timber of Pinus densiflora During Drying (소나무 수심 정각재의 건조 중 3차원 함수율 분포와 변이)

  • Three-dimensional distribution and variation of moisture content of boxed-heart square timber of Pinus densiflora was investigated to find the safe and rapid drying methods. As results, microwave-drying method could dry the boxed-heart square timber with sectional dimension of $150{\times}150mm$ under 10% moisture content (MC) within 72 hours with less surface checks, compared with hot-air drying. In case of microwave drying, the MC distribution during drying had a close relation with the initial MC distribution. In case of hot air drying, however, it was independent on the intial one except for the intial drying stage.

생약재 추출물의 수율 및 항고혈압 활성

  • 본 실험에 사용한 생약재는 금산 약초시장에서 2003년 6월에 구입하여 추출수율을 조사하였다. 그 결과, 생약재의 물 추출물의 동결건조 중량(%)이 30~40%에 달하는 생약재는 가자, 갈근, 맥문동, 산수유가 있고, 20~30%에 달하는 생약재는 감초, 구기자, 당귀, 오미자, 천궁, 황기가 이에 속했으며, 중량(%)이 10~20%에 달하는 생약재는 복분자, 오수유, 애엽, 작약, 진피, 지유, 파고지, 황련이 이에 속했다. 마지막으로 10%이하의 추출 수율을 나타낸 생약재들은 가시오가피, 강황, 계피, 석곡, 소목, 영지, 오약, 육두구, 정향, 죽엽, 필발, 초두구, 호장근이 이에 속했다. 생약재의 70% Ethanol 추출물의 동결건조중량을 살펴본 결과, 동결건조 중량(%)이 30~40%에 달하는 생약재는 가자, 당귀, 산수유가 이에 속하였고, 20~30%에 달하는 생약재는 감초, 맥문동, 구기자, 오미자, 오수유, 천궁, 황기가 속하였으며, 동결건조 중량(%)이 10~20%에 달하는 생약재는 복분자, 육두구, 애엽, 작약, 정향, 지유, 파고지, 호장근, 황련이 이에 속했다. 또한 10% 이하의 수율을 나타내는 생약재는 가시오가피, 강황, 갈근, 계피, 석곡, 소목, 영지, 오약, 익지인, 죽엽, 필발, 초두구가 이에 속하였다. 생약재의 추출 시간 및 온도에 따른 수율을 조사한 결과, 추출 시간이 경과함에 따라서 수율이 점차 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, 가자, 갈근, 황련, 복분자, 지유, 정향, 계피, 소목 순으로 높은 수율을 얻을 수 있었다. 생약재에 여러가지 효소를 이용한 가수분해 결과, 대부분의 생약재에 대해 95$^{\circ}C$에서 2시간동안 추출한 수율과 그다지 큰 차이는 보이지 않았지만 대부분의 생약재가 Termamyl 효소를 사용하여 가수분해하였을 때 가장 높은 수율을 나타내었다. 또한 지유의 경우는 Viscozyme 효소를 처리하였을 경우 가장 좋은 수율을 나타내었다. 또한, 효소의 최적 온도로 조정한 Water bath에서 0, 30, 60, 120, 210분간 효소 반응 시켜, 420nm에서 갈변도를 시간별로 측정해본 결과, Viscozyme 효소를 처리한 생약재에서 시간이 흐름에 따라 흡광도 수치의 변화가 크게 나타났다. 32종의 생약재 물 추출물의 항고혈압 활성을 측정한 결과, 파고지, 소목, 죽엽의 항고혈압 활성이 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 파고지의 효과가 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 10%에탄을 추출물의 경우에는 오미자, 오수유, 소목에서 항고혈압 활성이 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 오미자의 효과가 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 파고지 물 추출물을 칼럼(Sephacryl S-300, High Resolution)으로 분획하여 3개의 Peak를 얻었으며, 2번째 Peak의 항고혈압 활성이 매우 높은 것으로 나타났다.

  • Recently, biodegradable polymers are gaining more and more attention due to international environmental issues. Succinic acid is synthesised by chemical process of hydrogenation. Succinic acid synthesized has certain amount water content. To remove the water contained in succinic acid is used generally by hot air drying process. But recently, microwave drying process having the advantage of shortening the drying time and uniform drying of product are gaining more attention. In this study, hot air drying and microwave drying efficiency were compared at drying process. In addition, we confirmed commercial applicability in microwave drying process of succinic acid. Microwave drying process has higher efficiency than 70% compared with hot air drying process at thickness of 1cm. Economic efficiency were compared through examination of power consumption for complete drying of succinic acid at microwave and hot air dyring.

  • The freeze drying of garlic juice was carried out in a vacuum freeze dryer, laboratory size, by backface heating. The factors which influence the rate of freeze drying, the pressure of drying chamber, the plate temperature, the concentration and the thickness of a sample, were discussed in this study. The drying rate was in proportion to the drying chamber pressure and when the pressure was at 1.5 torr, the foaming occured on the surface of materials, so this condition was not suitable for freeze drying. As the temperature of plate increased, drying rate increased, but when the temperature was $20^{\circ}C$, it was impossible to accomplish freeze drying because the foaming and the dispersion occured in a sample. The higher the concentration of a sample was, the lower drying rate was.

  • Experiment were conducted to find out the effective drying method of citrus peel produced in Korea by varying the temperature of hot air, surface area of peels, peels from several citrus varieties and physicochemical treatment of the peel. 1. About $3{\sim}6\;days$ were required to reduce the moisture level of the peel from 70%(wet basis) to 20% at room temperature without forced convection. 2. Drying was speeded up until the temperature of hot air reached $60^{\circ}C$. Beyond that no significant increase in drying rate was observed. About 50 minutes were needed to reduce the moisture level (dry basis) to below 10% at $60^{\circ}C$ by forced convection 3. When the peel surface area was increased twice by cutting the peel into 256 fractions, the overall drying time (the time required to reduce the moisture level to 10%, dry basis) was shortened to 15 minutes from 50 mintes of the original peel. 4. No significant difference in drying rate was observed among the peels from several citrus varieties except Shaddock jabon and Citrus ponki tanaka, which dried more slowly than others. 5. Treatment of $Ca(OH)_2$ and the pressing of the peel before drying were effective in drying only when the initial moisture content was substantially higher.

Browning Inhibition of Paeonia lactiflora Root during Hot Air Dehydration (작약근(芍藥根)의 열풍건조시(熱風乾燥時) 갈변(褐變)의 효과적(效果的) 억제(抑制))

  • This research was carried out to investigate the effective methods of browning inhibition on Paeonia lactiflra Pall during hot air dehydratin. After drying for 36 hrs without pretreatment and with briquet fumigation moisture contents of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. was 16.0% and 16.2%, respectively, while with acidic solution, sulfite salt solution and blanching it was lower of 13.5, 12.9 and 14.8%, respectively. Using freeze drying moisture content was highest of 18.8%. The Hunter values of dried Paeonia lactiflora Pall., L, a, band ${\triangle} E$ showed that non-treatment had the most browning with 61.60, 1.89, 10.20 and 39.78, respectively, while briquet fumigation and sulfite salt solution were excellent in reducing browning. During freeze drying browning didn't occur. Paeoniflorin content was 2.41 and 2.51 %, respectively, in briquet fumigation and sulfite salt solution and was the highest (2.70%) in freeze drying. The content of $SO_2$, was 0.63% both in briquet fumigation and sulfite salts. It was 0.15% and 0.17% higher than nontreatment and freeze drying. The most effective pretreatment to inhibit browning of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. was soaking in sulfite salt solution $(0.5% NaHSO_4-0.5% Na_2S_2O_3)$ considering many things such as manpower, economical efficiency, drying time, commodity, etc. but safety should be evaluated to treat sulfite salts solution on peony roots.

Process Optimization of Red Pepper Drying for the Improvement of Drying Efficiency (건조효율 향상을 위한 고추건조공정의 최적화)

  • Drying process in a fixed bed red pepper dryer was modeled and simulated. Drying efficiency describing the effectiveness of energy usage in red pepper drying was defined as a ratio of energy used for moisture evaporation to total energy consumption, and expressed in combination of measurable temperature variables. The efficiency was compared with real evaporative efficiency and tested in the simulated and experimental drying. An overall drying efficiency was derived, and analyzed for various control variables consisting of drying temperature, air recycle ratio and air flow rate. Optimal operation conditions of drying was then searched by Box's complex method by using it as an objective function. Carotenoids retention was simulated and put as a constraint of product quality in the optimization. The optimization results gave that two staged drying operation could improve the ding efficiency compared with single staged drying. As a technique for further energy saving automatic termination of drying appeared feasible by monitoring an exit air temperature from dryer.

  • The effect of moisture absorption on the mechanical properties in carbon fiber reinforced composites has been investigated with various moisture environment such as sea water, tap water and distilled water. It also has been studied about the influence of drying of the immersed specimen for a certain period of time on the mechanical properties. As a result, we found that the ratio of moisture absorption mainly depended on the immersion time in the moisture environment and that of the immersed specimen for a certain period of time decreased with the drying time. We also found that tensile strength decreased with the increasing of the ratio of moisture absorption and the tensile strength decreased by moisture absorption recovered up to some extent by drying the specimen.

The Far-infrared Drying Characteristics of Steamed Sweet Potato (증자 호박고구마의 원적외선 건조특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the drying characteristics of steamed sweet potato and to establish optimal drying conditions for far-infrared drying of steamed sweet potato. 4 kg of steamed sweet potato was sliced to thicknesses of 8 and 10 mm, and dried by a far-infrared dryer until a final moisture content of $25{\pm}0.5%$. The far-infrared dryer conditions were an air velocity of 0.6, 0.8 m/s and drying temperature of 60, 70, and $80^{\circ}C$. The results can be summarized as follows. The drying time tended to be reduced as temperature and air velocity for drying increased. The Lewis and Modified Wang and Singh models were found to be suitable for drying of steamed sweet potato by a far-infrared dryer. The color difference was 35.09 on the following conditions: Thickness of 8 mm, temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, and air velocity of 0.8 m/s. The highest sugar content ($59.11^{\circ}Brix$) was observed on the conditions of a thickness of 8 mm, temperature of 80, and air velocity of 0.8 m/s. Energy consumption decreased on the conditions of higher temperature, slower air velocity, and thinner steamed sweet potato.

Study on Press-drying of Sapwood and Heartwood of Oak (상수리나무 변재(邊材)와 심재(心材)의 열판건조(熱板乾燥)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Press drying was used on sapwood and heartwood of oak (Qercus acutissima Carruthers) to find profitable means of drying low grade logs. This study was designed to investigate the process of press drying considering core temperature, current moisture content, drying rate, drying time, final moisture content, dimensional change and drying defects. The drying tests were conducted using 1.5 centimeter thick material at platen temperature of $175^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 35psi. The results were summarized as fallows. 1. Core temperature was divided into three stages of drying characterized by initial heating period, plateau temperature, and period of rising core temperature. Plateau temperature of heartwood material was higher and longer than that of sapwood material. 2. The predicting equation for change in drying rate of sapwood material was log y=-2.7925-0.0811x as function of time. That of heartwood material was log y=-3.3382-0.0468x. 3. Sapwood material reduced the moisture content from 59 to 2.5 percent in 45minutes. Heartwood material reduced the moisture content from 64 to 3.3 percent in 55 minutes. 4. Shrinkage during press drying were 20.4 percent in thickness direction and 2.5 percent in width direction. Recovery on equilibrium conditioning at 65 percent relative humidity and temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. were 11.4 percent in thickness direction and 49.4 percent in width direction. 5. Heartwood material developed severe honeycombing and moderate checking. The sapwood material dried without honeycombing, checking and collapse. All material kept wood flat.
