  • Because the behavior of cable bridges is dominated by dynamic response and is relatively complex, short- and long-term field monitoring are often required to evaluate the bridge condition. If a permanent SHMS (Structural Health Monitoring System) is not installed, a portable monitoring system is needed for the checking of bridge condition. In this case, it can be difficult to operate the portable monitoring system due to limited conditions such as power and communication according to the location and type of the bridge. In this study, the portable-based smart structural response monitoring system is developed that can be effectively used for short- and long-term monitoring of cable bridges in Korea and Southeast Asia. The developed system is a multi-channel portable data acquisition and analyzer that can be operated for a long time in the field using its own power supply system, and is included with the automated analysis algorithm for the dynamic characteristics of cable bridges using real-time data. In order to evaluate the field applicability of the developed system, field demonstration was conducted on cable bridges in Korea and Vietnam. Through the demonstration, the reliability and efficiency of field operation of the developed system were confirmed, and additionally, the possibility of application to overseas markets was confirmed in cable bridge monitoring field.

  • Many researchers have developed a series of vision-based technologies to monitor construction sites automatically. To achieve high performance of vision-based technologies, it is essential to build a large amount and high quality of training image database (DB). To do that, researchers usually visit construction sites, install cameras at the jobsites, and collect images for training DB. However, such human and site-dependent approach requires a huge amount of time and costs, and it would be difficult to represent a range of characteristics of different construction sites and resources. To address these problems, this paper proposes a framework that automatically constructs a training image DB using web crawling techniques. For the validation, the authors conducted two different experiments with the automatically generated DB: construction work type classification and equipment classification. The results showed that the method could successfully build the training image DB for the two classification problems, and the findings of this study can be used to reduce the time and efforts for developing a vision-based technology on construction sites.

  • FBG temperature sensor and strain sensor has been used to monitoring shrinkage and temperature of concrete retaining wall in construction site in its casting early age. The test results indicate that this monitoring method is a practical method for monitoring concrete at very early age. The monitoring technique used in this research could be extended to monitor shrinkage and temperature for mass concrete structure.

  • High incident of accidents in construction jobsite became a social problem. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 60,000 fatal accidents occur each year in construction workplace worldwide. This number of accidents accounts for about 17 percent of all fatal workplace accidents. Especially, accidents from struck-by and falls comprise of over 60 percent of construction fatalities. This paper introduces a prototype of a received signal strength index (RSSI)-based safety monitoring to mitigate the potential accidents caused by falls and struck-by. Correlation between signal strength and noise index is examined to create the distance profile between a transmitter and a receiver. Throughout the distributed sensor nodes attached on potential hazardous objects, the proposed prototype envisions that construction workers with a tracker-tag can identify and monitor their current working environment in construction workplace, and early warning system can reduce the incidents of fatal accident in construction job site.

  • The importance of the air and vessel traffic control center is increasing rapidly after the recent accident of 'Sewol ferry'. Aviation, marine, and the logistics sectors are already using monitoring and control technology widely. However, the monitoring and control system for complex and dangerous construction sites operation has yet to be employed. A monitoring/control system is required for effective communication between the control center and the construction equipment fleet at a construction site, and also the exact role that notifies accurate process and identification of hazards on construction sites as needed. Therefore, this paper presents the study about communication between the construction equipment fleet and the control center through the comparison of air traffic, marine, and logistics control systems for the development of construction equipment fleet management system.

  • Fine dust can cause serious problems to human health, and fugitive dust generated at construction sites is one of the main sources of fine dust in Korea. However, monitoring of the amount of fugitive dust generated at the ready-mixed concrete plant site is not performed, and only passive monitoring methods are partially applied in the field. Since it is impossible to control fugitive dust after it is exposed to the air, it is very important to suppress the occurrence or to remove it immediately at the stage of occurrence. Therefore, after identifying the characteristics through real-time monitoring in the fugitive dust generation stage, systematic management is required for suppressing or removing scattering dust in the field. In this study, the scattering dust generation characteristics were analyzed by measuring the particle mass concentration(PMC) of Fugitive dust generated at the aggregate unloading site of the ready-mixed concrete plant in real-time.

  • According to the government's announcement of the safety management enhancement policy for small and medium-sized private construction sites, the subject of mandatory CCTV installation has been expanded from large construction sites to small and medium-sized construction sites. However, since the existing CCTV at construction sites has been used for simple control for safety management, so research is needed for monitoring of construction sites. Therefore, in this study, three vanishing points were calculated based on a single image taken with a monocular camera, and then a camera matrix containing interior orientation parameters information was determined. And the accuracy was verified by calculating the height of the target object from the height of the reference object. Through height determination experiments using vanishing points based on a monocular camera, it was possible to determine the height of target objects only with a single image without separately surveying of ground control points. As a result of the accuracy evaluation, the root mean square error was ±0.161m. Therefore, it is determined that the progress of construction work at the construction sites can be monitored through the single image taken using the single camera.

  • Concrete placement work is executed using temporary structures such as formwork, support, etc. The temporary structures could collapse when they are not properly supported, and need to be monitored for structural safety. This paper introduces a USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network)-based monitoring system that are being tested at the Pusan National University for increasing structural safety. The system takes advantage of ubiquitous technologies together with a variety of sensors, which allows for wireless transmission of construction monitoring data. The temporary structures are constantly monitored to find out whether the structures are being supported in a stable condition. A field test is being conducted to acquire data, and use them for evaluating the safety condition of the construction operation.
