  • Two dimensional non-parametric model using daily mean temperature and daylength as predictor variables was established and daily developmental rates (DVR) for the period of seedling emergence to heading were estimated for 26 rice cultivars by using data from field direct seeding dates and short-day treatments experiment carried out at experimental farm of Seoul National University in 1990. Three existing parametric models were tested for the comparision of predictability with non-parametric model. The non-parametric model was found to be superior to parametric models in predicting heading date. The developmetal indice(DVI) at heading date, cummulative DVR's from seedling emergence showed 0.5 to 2.2 percent of coefficient of variations. The non-parametric model revealed errors of 0 to three days in 11 varieties when applied to data independent of those used in estimating DVR.

  • This study was conducted to find out the feasibility in direct seeded rice cultivation on the reclaimed saline soil. Seedling emergence was tested under the different application rates of rice straw and seeding depth, and also under combined treatments soil moisture regimes and seeding depth on saline soils in a greenhouse. The comparison of seedling stand and yield performance of rice in rotary till after broadcast seeding and in non-plow after broadcast seeding were tested on a field that reclaimed saline soil. Seedling emergence ratio in application of rice straw(4 and 6 tons /ha) was higher than that in non-application of rice straw. Seedling emergence and plant height were remarkably increased with the shallow seeding depth in the application of rice straw(4 tons /ha). The seedling emergence under proper soil moisture condition(25%) was higher than that under excess soil moisture condition(35%). Under proper soil moisture condition, the plant height was increased with the shallowed seeding depth. The number of seedling stand per m$^2$ in non-plow after broadcast seeding was larger than that in rotary till after broadcast seeding. Panicle number per m$^2$ in non-plow after broadcast seeding was much larger than that in rotary till after broadcast seeding and the yield showed the same trends as panicle number.

  • Appearance characteristics based on the daily mean air temperature (DMAT) were evaluated to obtain the fundamental data for the safety of dry-seeded rice under the local climatic conditions. The climatic data of 56 meteorological stations throughout Korea were applied for determination of the effective standard temperature at the emergence. The first appearance date at the DMAT 1$0^{\circ}C$ was found to be 20~30 days (standard deviation: 5~7 days) for year fluctuation and 4\geq$30 days for regional change in Pusan and Taegwallyong. Mean appearance date of it, also, was 10 days earlier than that of its 80% chance. Seeding date at the early critical seedling emergence was April 11 for Suwon, March 31 for Kwangju, April 1 for Taegu and April 7 for Kangnung.

  • This study was conducted to investigate methane emission under different rice cultural practices in paddy soil (Jeonbug Series, occurring on fluvio-alluvial plain). The rates of application of fresh rice straw were 5,000kg/ha in combination with 110 and 160kg N/ha as chemical fertilizer. The methane emission among the rice cultural practices was in the order of transplanting cultivation, direct seeding on flooded surface and direct seeding on dry paddy field. The average methane flux was $10.27mg/m^2/h$ in direct, seeding on dry paddy field and $24.1mg/m^2/h$ in transplanting cultivation. The diurnal variation of methane emission at heading stage was high from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m. and the methane emission rate was highly correlated with air temperature fluctuation and soil Eh. The seasonal change of methane flux was high from ear formation stage to heading stage.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the major weeds occurred in direct seeded rice and their compition with rice, and to establish the effective weed control method. The important weeds occurring in dry direct seeded rice were Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus amuricus, Rorippa islandica, etc. Among them, Echinochloa crusgalli was the most dominant weed species. In view of the Simpson's dominance index, the maximum number of the weeds was observed at 30 days after seeding, showing 0.26, but decreased as the time passed. In other hand, Simpson's dominance index of weed dry weight increased from 0.09 at 15DAS(days after seeding) to 0.28 at 60DAS indicating that particular weed such as barnyardgrass was dominating the fields. The plant height and the tiller number of rice in the dry direct seeded rice were not greatly affected by the time and duration of competition with weeds, but rice yield was greatly influenced by them. The yield reduction was observed when compition between rice and weeds were initiated at 20 to 40 DAS till the harvesting time. The highest weed control efficacy was observed at the treatment of systematic herbicide application such as soil applied Butachlor followed by Mefenacet/Bensulfuron-methyl/Dymron at 30 DAS after seeding, and soil applied Dimepiperate/Bensulfuron-methyl mixture as a preemergence type gave also an excellent control.

  • Ammonia volatilization is the major form of nitrogen (N) loss from flooded paddy soils and causes low N use efficiency. The effects of controlled release fertilizer (latex coated urea complex fertilizer, LCU) on reducing N loss by ammonia volatilization was measured comparing with urea in rice culture system of direct seeding on dry soil. In the treatment of urea, $NH_4-N$ concentration in surface water after flooding increased rapidly up to $8-10mg\;L^{-1}$ as affected by topdressing, while in the LCU treatment $NH_4-N$ concentration in surface water was less than $1mg\;L^{-1}$ during rice growing season. Relation of $NH_4-N$ concentration in surface water and ammonia volatilization was significant in urea treatment. The amount of ammonia volatilized from rice paddy of LCU treatment was $2.4-3.0kg\;ha^{-1}$ and the rate of ammonia volatilization from N fertilizer applied was only 2.0-2.3% compared with 5.9-7.9% in urea treatment. Therefore, N loss by ammonia volatilization could be reduced by 72-76% with by LCU compared with urea in rice culture system of direct seeding on dry soil.

  • The effect of seeding depth on the growth, mesocotyl elongation and herbicidal response of rice(Oryza sativa L., Japonica type, cv. "Tongjin") and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var orizicola Ohwi.) were studied in greenhouse experiments. Barnyardgrass growth as affected by different water depths was briefly tested. Rice and barnyardgrass were broadcast in soil into Oem, 1cm, 2cm and 3cm in seeding depth under dry direct-seeded condition. Butachlor(N-(buthoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl) acetamide) at dose rate of 1800g ai/ha and thiobencarb(S-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl] diethyl carbamothioate) at dose rate of 2100g and 4200g ai/ha were soil applied to them at 5 days after seeding. At 10 days after seeding, plants harvested to examine their growth as affected by seeding depth. Root length and shoot fresh weight of rice untreated was greatest in 1cm- and 3cm-seeding depth, respectively, however, mesocotyl did not elongate. While plant height of barnyardgrass grew regardless of seeding depth and water depth, but root length was greatest in 1cm-seeding depth of dry condition and reduced with increased water depth. And mesocotyl was elongated in only dry condition and its length increased with increased seeding depth. At 10 days after application thiobencarb applied pre-emergence inhibited plant height, and shoot fresh weight of rice in only 0cm-seeding depth under dry condition whereas was unaffected in above 1cm-seeding depth, similar to untreated control, and ever increased root length and root fresh weight of rice. On the other hand, shoot, root and leaf growth of barnyardgrass was, severely inhibited regardless of application rates and seeding depths. Reduction of shoot growth by treatment of herbicide was significantly greater than that of root growth. Consequently, reduction of barnyardgrass growth by treatment of thiobencarb did not be associated with seeding depth and mesocotyl elongation as affected by different seeding depth.
