  • This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the health-related quality of life in terms of periodontal disease by using the data from 8,035 respondents aged ≥40 years, excepting those with cancers having an serious impact on the quality of life, in the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2016-2018). The risk of quality of life deterioration was 1.32 times higher in the periodontal disease group than in the healthy periodontal group, those who were ≥50 years of age and had ≥2 comorbidities showed lower quality of life in the periodontal disease group. These results have confirmed that adults with periodontal disease get aware of the adverse quality of life though they have only a few chronic conditions and are expected to be useful as basic data necessary to develop health promotion programs that can help prevent periodontal disease and improve the health-related quality of life for adults.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on counseling, education, and treatment related to orthodontic practices through an understanding of the relationships between orthodontic treatment, oral health-related quality of life, and happiness of high school students. The subjects in this study were 500 students in Grades 1~3 of a high school in Jeollabuk-do. We conducted a survey targeting this group; the results revealed the following: in the social support item, peer support showed significant differences in the matter of orthodontic treatment (p<0.05). In oral health-related quality of life, the students without orthodontic treatment showed 14.09 scores that were higher than the students with treatment (p<0.05). Regarding happiness, the students with orthodontic treatment showed higher scores which were significantly different from the those of the non-orthodontic treatment group (p<0.05). Additionally, upon examining the correlations between self-esteem, social support, oral health-related quality of life, and happiness, oral health-related quality of life, peer support, and happiness showed the negative (-) correlations while the rest of the variables showed the positive correlations (p<0.05). The factors having effects on oral health-related quality of life included the stress, matter of orthodontic treatment, and teachers support (p<0.05). The factors having effects on happiness included self-esteem, peer support, and family support (p<0.05). Based on the above results, even though dental orthodontic treatment had negative effects on oral health-related quality of life, it had positive effects on happiness. Consequently, it would seem necessary to seek active methods to increase oral health-related quality of life. This improvement could be achieved by minimizing inconveniences, such as mastication, in the process of dental orthodontic treatment, and developing programs that could enhance happiness.

  • The health-related quality of life data are commonly skewed and bounded with spike at the perfect health status, and the variance tended to be heteroscedastic. In this study, we have developed a prediction model for EQ-5D using linear regression model, beta regression model, and extended beta regression model with mean and precision submodel, and also compared the predictive accuracy. The extended beta regression model allows to model skewness and differences in dispersion related to covariates. Although the extended beta regression model has higher prediction accuracy than the linear regression model, the overlapped confidence intervals suggested that the extended beta regression model was superior to the linear regression model. However, the expended beta regression model could explain the heteroscedasticity and predict within the bounded range. Therefore, the expended beta regression model are appropriate for fitting the health-related quality of life data such as EQ-5D.

  • This study aimed to comprehensively assess the demographic characteristics, health behaviors, subjective health status, health-related restriction of life, and quality of life of male and female elderly aged 65 years older using data from the 2013-2015 Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS). The results showed that compared to the male elderly, the female elderly was less educated, did not have a spouse or had less household income, had poorer health behaviors, and had lower quality of life caused by restrictions in life. The female elderly had significantly lower quality of life than that of the male elderly. Various factors were found to affect quality of life in both sexes. The presence of spouse and BMI did not affect quality of life of men but did affect the quality of life of women. On the other hand, smoking affected the quality of life of men but not of women. Based on these results, more in-depth studies are needed on the female elderly, who have been reported to have lower health-related quality of life, and sex-specific services and programs that could more effectively improve the quality of life among the elderly should also be developed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between quality of life and demographic characteristics and health-related behavioral characteristics, and their relevance to variables that represent health conditions among metropolitan-dwelling older adults. The study subjects were 380 senior citizens aged 65 or older living in the D metropolitan area, and data collection was conducted by visiting them for interviews in June 2019. A binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between independent variables (demographic characteristics, health-related behavioral characteristics, health condition variables) and the dependent variable (quality of life) while controlling for gender and age. As a result, the factors related to quality of life for those surveyed were education level, spousal status, living status, bear for living expenses, average monthly allowance, satisfaction with daily life, evaluation of sleep quality, smoking and eating habits, amount of regular exercise, hobbies, subjective health status, physical disability (if any), hearing ability, visual acuity, mastication ability, urinary incontinence (present or not), and amnesia. The above results suggest that quality of life for the elderly living in urban areas is significantly related to variables that indicate demographic characteristics, health-related behavioral characteristics, and health condition.
