An Exploratory Study on the Importance and Performance Analysis of Health Message Design Principles (건강증진 메시지 디자인 원리의 중요도와 실행도에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • This study investigated how people perceived the importance of health message design principles including gist presentation, usefulness of content, format, and intuitive design and how well a webzine article published by Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety was designed in terms of the four design principles. This study also explored what individual characteristics influenced the perceptions of health message design principles. A total of 294 adults participated in the survey, and their responses were analyzed with the Importance-Performance Analysis method. Participants perceived that usefulness of content was most important in the text design; gist presentation was most important in the visual design; and format was well designed in both text and visual messages. This study showed that it is crucial to improve the quality of visual health messages particularly in terms of gist presentation and intuitive design. We also found that individuals' interest in health played a significant role in the perceptions of health messages. These results were discussed in regards to principles and strategies for the effective design of health messages.

Content Analysis of Anti-Smoking TV advertisements: Different Adaptation of Health Communication Theories between Korea and the U.S.A. (금연 TV광고의 내용분석 연구 -한국과 미국의 차이에 기반한 건강 커뮤니케이션 이론의 적용-)

  • This study examined Korean and the U.S.A..'s television anti-smoking advertisements that were coined to discourage adults and teens smoking. A content analysis of 71 television advertisements listed in the "Smoking Guidance Program" operated by Korea Health Promotion Foundation. This study evaluated to detect whether the advertising content reflected core health communication theories such as health belief model, theory of reasoned action, and social cognitive theory used in the designing of anti-smoking ad message to change behavior and attitudes toward smoking unfavorably. The results showed that Korean anti-smoking ads mostly relied on social norm messages, followed by smoking attitude. The message of modeling and self-efficacy was least used; while, the U.S.A. ads focused more on modeling and self efficacy. This difference comes from the cultural difference. Namely, Korea focused more on collectivism rather than individualism. The anti-smoking ads of Korea and the U.S.A. most frequently adopted horror and humor rather than sadness, no appeal, and angry. The ads targeted more on adults rather than teens. The research identifies the types of advertisements that are most likely to utilized and underutilize in the Korea and U.S.A. anti-smoking ads and contribute to further understandings of anti-smoking ads theoretically.

Effectiveness of a Workplace Walking Program Using a Fitness Tracker Including Individual Counseling and Tailored Text Messaging (피트니스 트래커를 활용한 사업장 걷기운동 프로그램의 효과: 개별 상담과 맞춤형 문자메시지 적용)

  • Purpose: This study is designed as a non-equivalent, control group pre/post-test for identifying effectiveness of a workplace walking program using a fitness tracker including individual counseling and tailored text messaging. Methods: Seventy-nine employees from two large companies were allocated into an intervention group (n=39) and a control group (n=40). Participants were asked to wear a fitness tracker (Fitbit Charger HR) during 24-hour, 5-days per week, for 10 weeks. The intervention group was provided with daily walking steps measured by Fitbit, weekly counseling with a specifically designed workbook, and seven weekly text messaging, and the control group with the fitness tracker only. Results: At the week 10 measurement, there were significant differences between the intervention and control groups in physical activity self-efficacy (p<.001), physical activity behavior (p<.001), daily walking steps (p<.001), systolic blood pressure (p=.033), and wellness (p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that the workplace walking program using a fitness tracker including individual counseling and tailored text messaging is more effective for persons with 10,000 steps/day. Therefore, it is recommended to actively apply this workplace walking program to inactive employees for encouraging regular physical activities and improving their wellness.

Readability of Health Messages and Its Communicative Effect (건강 메시지의 독이성과 소통 효과)

  • Objectives: Developing efficient health messages is important for improving health behaviors at a societal level. This study attempts to test a few variables that could constitute the elements for measuring readability of health message. The number of subject-verb relationships in a sentence, placement of jargon, i.e., explication before or after each jargon, and the number of less familiar Chinese characters were manipulated to hypothetically differentiate readability. Methods: In a $2{\times}2$ mixed factorial experiment, 152 college students read two health messages regarding side effect of health functional food and energy drink. The participants' perceived readability was asked, and eight questions were developed to measure the participants' recognition of the health information. Results: Those who read messages manipulated to have high readability rated the message significantly higher than those who read messages with low readability. Also, the former answered the questions more correctly than the latter, implying the association between readability and knowledge acquisition regarding health. Conclusions: Readability is suggested as a factor determining the effect of health messages in affecting the public's health risk perception and relevant behaviors. Further studies to sophisticate the measurement itself and to examine the effect of actual public messages with different readabilities are suggested.

Gist-based Message Design Principles for Health Promotion and Public Health Education: Explication of Fuzzy Trace Theory (핵심정보 중심의 건강증진 및 보건교육 메시지 구성 원리: Fuzzy Trace Theory의 함의)

  • Objectives: This paper aims to explain principles of gist-based health message design and discuss their implications for health promotion and public health education. Methods: After reviewing Reyna and Brainerd's Fuzzy Trace Theory(FTT), the authors explicate how to transform FTT into a practical guidance of health message design. Our explication is based upon FTT's reasoning that human intuition, rather than analysis, takes a primary role in message recall and comprehension, followed by judgment and decision making. We expect gist-based message design to be appropriate to serve such intuition. Results: Four principles of gist-based message design are offered: (1) provision of qualitative, as well as quantitative, information of gist, (2) inclusion of visual images corresponding to gist, (3) use of effective message formats to emphasize the gist (4) inclusion of relevant reasons and contextutal information. Conclusions: Gist-based message design has theoretical and practical implications for health promotion, specifically in the field of public health education, the press and governmental communication toward the public, and provider-patient communication in medical settings.

Context-aware based U-health Environment Information Service (상황인식 기반의 유헬스 환경정보 서비스)

  • U-health care services have been attracted to effectively solve some problems in promoting health and preparing aging society. Although the recent U-health care services have been developed to treat diseases, it requires environment information related to health for preventing fundamental diseases and for promoting health. In this study, a U-health environment service that reflects context recognition information is proposed. The proposed service draws environment information using local weather and healthcare information in users' residential areas. In the context recognition based U-health environment services, various services are provided to users not only health, living weather based menu, and exercise services but user location based warning messages for dangerous regions and remote emergency services. That is, based on such context recognition, some events that are to be occurred to users are detected and then it will provide proper services. Thus, it improves the satisfaction of U-health services and its service qualities.

  • 복약기는 개인의 건강 증진 및 질병 예방을 위한 개인건강기기(Personal Health Device: PHD) 중 하나로 정해진 스케줄에 따라 약을 배출하는 기기이다. 복약기를 통해 수집되는 복약자의 복약상태(복약 여부, 복약 횟수 등)는 의료진 및 보호자에게 복약자를 관리하기 위한 중요한 정보가 될 수 있으므로 모니터링 서버에게 실시간 전송하여 의료진 및 보호자가 분석할 수 있도록 하는 것이 바람직하다. 이에 본 논문에서는 복약기 내에 탑재되어 사용자의 복약상태를 원격 모니터링 서버에게 실시간 전송하는 복약상태 전송 에이전트를 제안한다. 복약상태 전송 에이전트는 단말기 관리에 관한 산업계 표준인 Open Mobile Alliance(OMA) Device Management(DM) 프로토콜에 따라 복약 상태 메시지를 생성 및 전송한다. 복약 상태 메시지를 수신하는 모니터링 서버로는 OMA DM 기반의 상용 서버를 사용하였다. 이는 추후 본 논문의 복약상태 전송 에이전트를 확장하여 복약기 원격 관리 용도로 적용하기 위함이다. 본 논문에서는 제안된 복약상태 전송 에이전트의 구현 결과 및 모니터링 서버와 연동성 검증 결과를 제시한다. 검증 결과 제안된 에이전트는 복약기로부터 복약상태를 수집한 후 OMA DM 프로토콜에 따라 복약상태를 정상적으로 전송함을 알 수 있었다. 즉, 본 논문의 복약상태 전송 에이전트는 복약상태의 원격 전송뿐 만 아니라, OMA DM 을 준수하는 기존의 모바일 단말기 관리 서버들을 복약상태 모니터링 서버로 활용할 수 있다는 장점이 있다.

The Influence of Knowledge, Beliefs and Attitudes on Anti-Smoking Public Service Announcement Message Types and Audience Characteristics (수용자특성 및 금연광고 메시지가 지식․신념․태도에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: In this study, the most executed social norm and advertisement about health consequences status were examined. The direction of effective anti-smoking advertisement is suggested in this study by figuring out the primary factors which affect smoking attitudes. Methods: The survey period of this study was from Nov $5^{th}$ to Nov $16^{th}$, 2012. 423 complete questionnaires were used for final analysis. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS Ver. 14.0, and reliability analysis, factor analysis, frequency analysis, F/t qualification, t-test, and multiple regression analysis, were performed. Results: This study is worth as a diagnosis of current status by using advertisement about social norm(51.4%) and health result(34.3%), which covers total of 85% in appeal types of anti-smoking advertisement that has been practically used in Korea. As a result, the health result type showed better result on belief and attitude. Conclusions: When establishing message strategy for anti-smoking advertisement, this study can help future direction for effective anti-smoking advertisement by figuring out effect of factors on smoking attitude.

Intervention of Environmental Health Behavior for Pregnant Women: A Scoping Review (임신여성의 환경적 건강행위 중재: 주제범위 고찰)

  • This study explored the environmental health behavior intervention study for pregnant women using a scoping review. The evidence synthesis of intervention methods, research topics, outcome variables, and effectiveness was performed. Eight studies were extracted from the databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and RISS. The topics were nutritional interventions and behavioral interventions that can reduce exposure to fine dust, heavy metals, chemicals, and electromagnetic waves to pregnant women. The interventions were conducted through lectures, cartoons, workshops, interviews, messages, and home visits. The effect of the intervention was found to improve the health behaviors of pregnant women and to solve problems in the residential environment. Therefore, the environmental health behavior interventions for pregnant women were effective.

Factors Affecting College Students' Intention to Use Mental Health Services for Mental Wellness (대학생들의 정신건강 서비스 이용의도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how much psychosocial factors affecting the intention to use mental health services and the characteristics of respondents in college students. Specifically, the influence of the level of knowledge about mental health, subjective norms, attitudes for seeking help, and social psychological stress levels on the respondents'intention to seek help is examined. As a result of the study, it was found that the subjective norms, social and psychological stress levels, and mental health students'intention to use mental health services were influenced by factors. It was found that subjective norms, psychosocial stress level, and attitude toward using mental health service were factors that influence the intention to use mental health service. The influence of these factors on help seeking intention was in the order of psychosocial stress level, help seeking attitude, and subjective norm. The study provided implications that were helpful in message development when executing mental health promotion and awareness campaigns by identifying predictive factors of the intention to use mental health services of college students.
