  • The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of an eight session self-management support program for improvement of patient activation, joint flexibility and health-related quality of life among medical aid beneficiaries with osteoarthritis. This study was part of a randomized and controlled research of a self-management support intervention. Participants were 60 medical aid beneficiaries who agreed to participate in this study, and were assigned to an experimental group (n=30) or control group (n=30). The 8-session and tailored program led by a trained case manager with the patient-centered approaches and cognitive-emotional-behavioral skills. Analysis included change in scores, ${\chi}^2-test$, Fisher's exact test, t-test and ANCOVA. The results showed significant increase in patient activation, joint flexibility (shoulder and right knee) except health-related quality of life in the experimental group compared to the control group. The self-management support program indicated an effect on patient activation and joint flexibility. Further research is needed to examine the outcome in the long term(9 and 12-month follow up).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide a critical assessment of evidence-based Korean pediatric research that can inform clinical practicability of, and future research on distraction interventions for pediatric procedural pain management. Methods: A critical review of evidence-based Korean pediatric research was conducted. Databases were searched to identify research that included an evaluation of a distraction intervention as an intervention for pediatric procedural pain management. The search yielded 68 studies. Results: From these studies, 14 were included for this review and all were recently published (2003-2014). Quasi experimental designs were most frequently used (n=12) and for 71.4% the focus was preschoolers. Audiovisual techniques were the most common form of distraction. In most studies clinical utility of the distraction intervention was not examined. Fairly consistent reductions in behavioral measures of pain in association with the distraction intervention were found but less consistent results were found for physiological measures. Conclusion: Lack of methodological rigor limits the evidence for distraction interventions to reduce pain and fear experienced by children during painful procedures. Further research to analyze the cost and time-effectiveness and to identify consumer and provider satisfaction with distraction interventions is needed to determine whether distraction interventions are clinically relevant.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the convergence factors affecting of physical activity level on hemodialysis patients' depression, health-related quality of life and sleep disorders. The participants were 193 hemodialysis patients undergoing hemodialysis in five hospitals in two cities. Data were analyzed by technical statistics, correlation and hierarchical regression. The results showed that depression and physical activity were negatively correlated (r = -.259, p <.01), and physical and mental health related quality of life and physical activity correlated positively (R = .273, p <.01, r = .186, p <.01), respectively. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that the higher the quality of life related to physical health, the higher the level of physical activity of hemodialysis patients (${\beta}=.22$, p <.01). Therefore, it is required to develop an intervention program to improve health-related quality of life by improving the physical activity of hemodialysis patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among the social support, depression, and health-related quality of life and the factors affecting the health-related quality of life in patients with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). The subjects consisted of 134 patients who had received CABG from S general hospitals in Seoul, Korea, and the results were analyzed using the SPSS Win 21.0 program. The physical component summary (PCS) was significantly different depending on the age (F=4.616, p=.004), gender (t=3.657, p<.001), education (F=7.688, p=.001), current job (t=-4.363, p<.001), spouse (t=-3.065, p=.003), and underlying disease (F=3.078, p=.030) of the subjects. There were differences in the scores for the mental component summary (MCS) according to their gender (t=2.243, p=.027) and monthly income (F=2.821, p=.041). A significant negative correlation was found between social support and depression (r=-.415, p<.001). Social support had a statistically significant positive correlation with the MCS (r=.261, p=.002). Significant negative correlations were found between depression and the PCS (r=-.459, p<.001) and MCS (r=-.554, p<.001). The depression and underlying disease accounted for 36.7% of the variance in the PCS. The depression accounted for 34.1% of the variance in the MCS. Based on these results, nurses should develop nursing intervention programs for patients who have undergone CABG which take into consideration their depression.
