  • In Chrysanthemum ${\times}$ morifolium, 30 days of continuous short days (SD) are required for flowering. The effects of alternating short day (SD) - long day (LD) - SD treatments was tested in 5 daisy-like single cultivars, 'Limelight', 'Sunlight', 'Candle Light', 'Firebrand', and 'Twilight', Thee other decorative type cultivars, 'Spirit', 'SunburstSpriit', 'Mandalay', and 'Illini Harvest' was also included. Short day treatment was given for 30 days (control: 30SD) and 5 or 10 LD were interposed following 5 or 10 SD. Different responses were noticed when data from all cultivars were combined, showing that flowering was delayed and the number of ray florets were increased by 5 SD-10 LD-25 SD. The number of ray florets, 40 florets in 'Firebrand' and 60.8 florets in 'Candlelight' was increased significantly by 5 SD-10 LD-25 SD as compared to the control. There were no adverse effects by SD-LD-SD treatment, except for the delay in flowering time from 6 to 7 days. The number of ray florets in 'Illini Harvest' and 'Limelight' were, however, not increased by any SD-LD-SD treatments. Cultivar dependent responses should further be investigated in other newly available cultivars, and this information could be used to breed new cultivars.

  • To find out proper harvest time and to select a variety having high yield and good quality, growth characteristics and contents of rosmarinic acid and essential oil were investigated according to harvest time of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze collected in Korea. Only the number of flower cluster per plant among growth characteristics of 7 collections showed not significant difference. The range of dry matter weight of above-ground part used as crude drug was $666{\sim} 1328kg/10a$ and the weight of flower cluster and root was not significant among the plant parts of collections. Dry matter weight of top was the highest on Sep. 20, full-bloom stage. Rosmarinic acid contents among in 7 collections showed significant difference and the range were $0.32{\sim}2.34%$ in flower, $0.97{\sim}1.64%$ in leaf, $0.03{\sim}0.21%$ in stem and $0.91{\sim}6.56%$ in root. The contents of rosmarinic acid and essential oil in leaf was 3.76%, 5.78% before flowering and 1.55%, 4.28% after flowering respectively. The total content of rosmarinic acid of all plant parts was decreased after flowering but that of essential oil was increased after flowering.

  • Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong and used as anti-tumor medicinal plant, was cultivated in plastic house. The experiment was done to clarify the effect of long-day and night-break treatment at the timing of bolting on its morphological characters, organ dry weight and flowering of florets. After grown in 15cm plastic boxes containing 2:1 soil:peat moss mixture for about 4 months, long-day of 16 hours and night-break of 2 hours around midnight were treated from Sept. 9. The plants were sampled 5 times at 2-week interval after the treatments. Long-day and night-break treatment delayed the growth of inflorescence and showed greater stem diameter on the last sampling and no. of leaves and bracts than the natural daylength. The treatments also had greater leaf and bract dry weight since 2 weeks, and the other fraction and total dry weights since 4 weeks but less floret dry weight from 4 to 6 weeks after the treatments than the natural daylength. The treatments, however, decreased no. of flowered florets and ratio of flowering plants although all the treatments showed nearly the same no. of total florets per plant until 6 weeks after the treatments, late October, which resulted in the modification of source to sink or vice versa. In the natural daylength, the florets were functioned as sink, while root, leaf and bract as source, but in the long-day and night-break treatments stem and florets were done as sink.

  • Transparent vinyl-mulching cultivation plots heavy-fertilized (6-14-20 kg $10a^{-1}\; of\; N-P_2O_5-K_2O)$ in growing peanuts produced 315-344Kg $10a^{-1}$ of quality kernels through improvement of the low temperature conditions of underground environment during the early growing stage and kernel-filling stage. The yields of which were 82-99 percent higher than that of conventional cultivation plot. The vinyl-mulching cultivation techniques accelerated emergence, young seedling growth, flowering, pod bearing and kernel filling of peanuts in Korea.

  • To compare the effect of dikegulac (sodium 2,3 : 4, 6-di-O-isopropylidene-2-keto-L-gulonate) and ancymidol (${\alpha}$-cyclopropyl-${\alpha}$-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol) on the growth and flowering responses of Salvia splendens cv. Bonfire, foliar spray of dikegulac at rates of 0.06 and 0.12% and ancymidol at rates of 50 and 100 ppm, and soil drench of ancymidol at rates of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/pot were treated. Dikegulac reduced the plant height and induced the lateral shoot development by disrupting apical dominance, and thus increased the number of inflorescences and retarded flowering date. Dikegulac treatment greatly increased chlorophyll content of leaf, especially chlorophyll a. Ancymidol reduced the plant height without disrupting apical dominance and retarding flower ing date, but did not increase inflorescence number except soil drench at rate of 0.1 mg/pct. Ancymidol treatment significantly increased chlorophyll content of leaf, especially chlorophyll a. Dikegulac can be effectively used as a pinching agent and branching agent for salvia.

  • This study was conducted to examine the characteristics of flowering and fruiting in Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird'. Lotus rhizomes were planted in pot (70 cm in length and 71 cm in width) on April 18, 2008, and grown under rain shelter condition at a private farm in Muan-gun, Jeonnam. Ninety percent of the lotus plants were bloomed as two flowers per a plant, and the others were one flower. The first flowers were bloomed in the middle or late July, and the second flowers in the early August. Flower stalks were formed between eighth and tenth internodes in the main rhizome. Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird' had light yellow flowers, 12 cm in length and 13 cm in width. Lotus plants of 21.4% were not bloomed, resulting from the insufficient securing of internodes in the main rhizome and the blind. We, therefore, concluded that Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird' as a ornamental plant should be grown up to 8 in the node number of main rhizome until mid-July.

  • This research was aimed to extend the vase life, improve the cut flower quality and promote flowering rate of bulbous cut Iris 'Blue Magic'. Three different concentrations of 1-MCP ranging from 250 to $750nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were treated on cut Iris flowers for the vase life elongation. Several effects of 1-MCP treatment has shown such as early flowering as one day but vase life showed no significant differences comparing to the untreated control. Flowering rate was 75% or more in the treated ones as compare to 64.2% in untreated control. Especially, in a treatment with $250nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 12 hours it showed all flowering. In many post-harvest experiments of cut flowers, ethylene production from flower organ has considered as most critical factor on vase life. Ethylene production from flower organ was measured by gas chromatography (GC) and it showed that there is no direct relation between flower longevity and emission of the ethylene gas in cut Iris. In comparison with the untreated control, ethylene generation rather seems to be increased as 1-MCP treatment increased. There was a synergy effect when 1-MCP and BA applied simultaneously in which flowering and vase life were fastened and also extended, respectively. Therefore, treatment of 1-MCP for cut Iris at flower early harvest is able to improve the flower quality both by diminishing non-flowering rate and by extended flower longevity.

  • The spring season in Korea features a dynamic landscape with a variety of flowers such as magnolias, azaleas, forsythias, cherry blossoms and royal azaleas flowering sequentially one after another. However, the narrowing of south-north differences in flowering dates and those among the flower species was observed in 2014, taking a toll on economic and shared communal values of seasonal landscape. This study was carried out to determine whether the 2014 incidence is an outlier or a mega trend in spring phenology. Data on flowering dates of forsythias and cherry blossoms, two typical spring flower species, as observed for the recent 60 years in 6 weather stations of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) indicate that the difference spanning the flowering date of forsythias, the flower blooming earlier in spring, and that of cherry blossoms that flower later than forsythias was 30 days at the longest and 14 days on an average in the climatological normal year for the period 1951-1980, comparing with the period 1981-2010 when the difference narrowed to 21 days at the longest and 11 days on an average. The year 2014 in particular saw the gap further narrowing down to 7 days, making it possible to see forsythias and cherry blossoms blooming at the same time in the same location. 'Cherry blossom front' took 20 days in traveling from Busan, the earliest flowering station, to Incheon, the latest flowering station, in the case of the 1951-1980 normal year, while 16 days for the 1981-2010 and 6 days for 2014 were observed. The delay in flowering date of forsythias for each time period was 20, 17, and 12 days, respectively. It is presumed that the recent climate change pattern in the Korean Peninsula as indicated by rapid temperature hikes in late spring contrastive to slow temperature rise in early spring immediately after dormancy release brought forward the flowering date of cherry blossoms which comes later than forsythias which flowers early in spring. Thermal time based heating requirements for flowering of 2 species were estimated by analyzing the 60 year data at the 6 locations and used to predict flowering date in 2014. The root mean square error for the prediction was within 2 days from the observed flowering dates in both species at all 6 locations, showing a feasibility of thermal time as a prognostic tool.
