  • This study was carried out in the Chungnam National University grassland experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009 in order to find out the growth characteristics, seasonal anthesis distribution and botanical composition of the wildflowers which were altogether composed of 70% sheep fescue and 30% introduced wildflowers. The experimental species contained 23 species in total to which sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass) and 22 introduced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average plant height was 29.7 cm at first growing season and 34.1 cm at second growing season. They bloomed out into eight colors, but into simplified two colors during August, September, and October. The blooming season leant toward April and June and from August there were lots of difficulties in the wildflower blooming and the maintenance of their consistency. The botanical composition of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weeds were 21%, 64%, and 15% in the first growing season (2008) and 19%, 65%, and 16% respectively, in the second growing season (2009). Based on this result, cultivating the introduced wildflower grassland has more difficulty because there is some difficulty in the wildflower seasonal distribution and the maintenance of its consistency. And thus, the introduction of more various wildflower such as perennials and flowers blooming after summer, and the seed-mixture combination method should be studied.

Effect of Seeding Rate (Sheep fescue 90% + wildflowers 10%) on the Growth Characteristics, Seasonal Anthesis Distribution and Botanical Composition in Wildflower Pastures (쉽 페스큐(90%)와 야생화(10%)의 파종비율이 야생화초지의 생육특성, 계절개화분포 및 식생변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out in order to find out the growth characteristics, the seasonal anthesis distribution and the botanical composition of the wildflower pastures which were altogether composed of 90% sheep fescue and 10% wildflowers in the Chungnam National University experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009. The experimental species contained 34 species in total consisting of sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass), 4 native wildflowers, and 29 induced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average length was 28.7 cm one year later and 36.7 cm two years later. They bloomed out into from six to nine colors, but into one or three colors during August, September, and October. The blooming season leant toward May and June, and from August, there was lots of difficulty in the wildflower blooming and the maintenance of their consistency. Especially, at the age of two (2009) the color, seasonal distribution, and consistency emerged as problems owing to the reduction of annual wildflowers after winterization. The annual botanical composition of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weeds came to 22%, 68%, and 10% each one year later (2008) and 19%, 72%, and 9% each two years later (2009). Based on this result, cultivating wildflower in grassland (90% sheep fescue and 10% wildflowers) is the proper method not only for maintaining green space, to prevent soil erosion by sheep fescue, but also for commanding a fine view of wildflowers.

  • The experiment was conducted to get basic information for cotton breeding program through four-variety diallel cross population. Additive, dominant, maternal, and reciprocal effect were observed significantly for days to maturity. Based on the Vr-Wr graphical analysis, the characters, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed and lint weight per boll, lint weight per boll, width of seed, 100-seed weight, days to flowering, and days to maturity were found to inherit incomplete dominance, and the characters of number of bolls per plant, width of seed, number of seeds per boll, and length of seed were assumed to inherit over dominance. The component of genetic variance analysis for boll weight, seed and lint weight per boll, lint weight per boll, number of seeds per boll, length of seed, and days to flowering showed that additive effects were higher than dominant effects. The narrow-sense heritability(h$_2$N) for boll weight, seed and lint weight per boll, lint weight per boll, days to flowering, and days to maturity showed high values as more than 43.19%. The estimate of broad-sense heritability(h$_2$B) value was higher than that of h$_2$N because of the low importance of dominance effects.

  • Festivals using plant phenology is one of the examples can represent the ecosystem services. Changwon Jinhae Gunhangje is typical spring festival using cherry blossoms phenology. This research was done to define relationship between flowering of cherry blossoms and Gunhangje. Phenological data (Julian day) of cherry blossoms and visitor number of Gunhangje from 1987 to 2013 were collected. Differences of Phenological phase of cherry blossoms and duration of Gunhangje was analyzed. Trend analysis was performed to know changes of flowering and budding day of cherry blossoms. Correlations between visitor number of Gunhangje and environmental factors was defined by factor analysis and regression analysis. Results are showed that during the 26 years, periodicity of flowering and budding day was not identified or even identified it was not significant. Environmental factors effect on visitor numbers of Gunhangje were defined as temperature factor, day factor, and precipitation factor. Temperature factor was significantly correlated with visitor numbers of Gunhangje. Though Flowering day of cherry blossoms and festival duration was not matched, however, difference of visitor numbers was not showed. These results suggest that fixed duration of Gunhangje would be more effective to visitors than changing the festival duration following the phenological day changes of cherry blossoms.

  • This study was conducted to analyze ripening characteristics of the seed according to days after flowering. The seeds were harvested on land located in the Department of Herbal Crop Research in Rural Development Administration in 2019. Seed weight and germination rate were investigated according to days after flowering and the embryo:seed ratio was examined during the fruiting process. The results showed that the weight increased significantly by the days after flowering at each inflorescence and the seed began to germinate at different time. Further, given the embryo:seed ratio, we found that embryo continue to grow in the seed. Because Angelica acutiloba (Siebold & Zucc.) Kitagawa bloom in various inflorescences, the stage of embryonic development of the seeds can affect the germination of seed. Based on our results, the key seed harvest period for good seed is 50 to 70 days after flowering.

  • This study was carried out to obtain a basic intonation for the development of a new com hybird with tillers. Materials used in this study were 20 lines having three to four tillers per plant including the PI213749 U.S. line with non-tillers. These 20 lines were compared for the botanical characteristics and genetic distances were measured using RAPD analysis. Flowering date of the K15 was very earlier, while the K07 was very late in flowering date. Stem height and ear height were similar except for K04 and the K15. K06, K13 and K19 lines were appeared to be resistant to lodging due to decreased ear height. Number of tillers per plant of lines used were shown three to five on average. K09 showed the highest kernel yield, while the K08 was low. Among characteristics measured tiller per plant and flowering dates, and silking dates showed a positive correlation, while 100 kernels weight, flowering date and ear height were shown a negative with tillers per plant. A total of 17 bands by RAPD analysis using four per primer were appeared and these lines were classified into three groups, especially the third group could be classified into of four sub-groups.

  • To clarify the influence of ethylene on flowering and senescence of carnation flowers and the treatment of the floral preservative solution for reducing their ethylene production, bud-cut carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. Coral) were sprayed with/without 500 ppm ethephon [(2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid] and then held in distilled water or preservative solution (5% sucrose+50 ppm $AgNO_3$+300 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline). 1. Ethylene inhibited to bloom carnation flowers because of causing sleepiness. 2. Carnation flowers were led to senescence after a lot of ethylene was produced by them. Therefore, ethylene seems to act as a trigger of senescence in carnation flowers. 3. The features of senescence in carnation flowers were different in accordance with the amount of ethylene produced by the flowers. 4. Exposure to ethylene decreased fresh weight, flower diameter, and water uptake of carnations. 5. The floral preservative extended vase life markedly by inhibiting ethylene production of cut flowers. The flowers exposed to lots of ethylene, however, were not restored even though they were held in the preservative solution.

  • Shoot weight of Orostachys japonicus should determine its profitability. The study was carried out to measure the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilization level (0, 5, 10, 20kg/10a) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 when afterward samples were taken every 4 weeks to Nov. 16. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased with increased N levels. Leaf and bract, floret, shoot and total dry weights as well as withering rate showed similar response to the above morphological characters. Florets were less formed with increased N levels but were not flowered due to the night-break treatment, meaning that N fertilization had little effect on its growth and anthesis of the florets.

  • Three seasme cultivars were compared in viewpoints of ripening developments and yielding potentials per plant after the flowering date. On this study, timely ripening and yielding developments were checked separately with capsules and seeds which outcome from the flowers labelled at 30th of July, the maximum flowering stage. Mostly, size and dry weight developments were estimated and the results obtained are as follows; 1. "Early Russian" was recognized as an ideal cultivar with large sized capsule and high lipid contents. However, under the enough ripening periods and ripening conditions (temperature, lights, and nutrients, etc.), the cultivar has weakness on the capsule developments which is competed with seed developments as mean of sink concern. 2. "Suwon 5" was a high yielding cultivar under the proper ripening weather (F. ex. southern districts), but under the unfavorable ripening conditions the cultivar may have weakness of rapid yield decrease by comparatively later formation of seed weight than the capsule. Especially the cultivar has the very ripening characteristics adapting to southern districts which have higher temperature and later low limiting stage for sesame ripening. 3. "Black colored native" seasme cultivar showed lower yielding and later ripening characteristics among others. Also, under the unfavorable ripening conditions, the cultivar has the weakness of yield decrease. Even under the favorable conditions, the cultivar will still have the weakness which is not able to increase in yield, because the capsule development would be finished in size and dry weight too early to accept the later developments of seeds.e later developments of seeds.
