  • The polymers, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) -modified asphalt mixtures are advanced asphalt pavement materials in which $3{\sim}6%$ of them, and/or some other additive, by weight of total binder are added. The purpose of modifying asphalt material is to improve typical weakness such as rutting and cracking resistance of normal asphalt mixtures. These materials have been proved to show many advantages and practical applicability in the plant and field. Wet processed PMA binder and/or dry processed asphalt mixtures are developed as field products for many years. The objective of this paper is to show the characteristics of the LDPE and SBS-modified asphalt mixtures by comprehensive evaluation and comparison with those of normal asphalt mixtures.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of viscoelastic properties and fatigue performance of SBS modified asphalt mixtures depending on the aggregate gradation. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and uniaxial tensile creep tests are performed to analyze the thermomechanical behavior of asphalt binders and mixtures, respectively. Uniaxial tensile fatigue tests for seven different asphalt mixtures are conducted to evaluate the effects of aggregate gradations and SBS modifier on the fatigue performance of the mixtures. DSR and uniaxial tensile creep tests results show that the SBS modified asphalt mixtures have better rutting resistance than the unmodified mixtures at high temperatures regardless of the aggregate gradations used. Fatigue factor $G^*sin\delta$ in Superpave binder specification may not be adequate for evaluating the fatigue Performance of asphalt mixtures. It is observed from uniaxial tensile fatigue tests that SBS modified asphalt mixtures compared to unmodified mixtures have ten times longer fatigue lives regardless of the aggregate gradations(dense, SMA, and Superpave gradations) used in the mixtures. The better fatigue performance of the SBS modified mixtures is observed even after long-term aging process. The effect of aggregate gradations on the fatigue performance is not as significant as the SBS modifier. The cellulose fiber added in the SMA mixture has negligible effects on the viscoelastic Properties and fatigue performance of the mixture, but is effective in reducing draindown. Although the SBS modified asphalt binder is used, it may be necessary to add the cellulose fiber into the SMA mixture to prevent the draindown.

  • Nowadays, modifying asphalt to improve the resistancy of plastic deformation or rutting on roads has been drawing attention. In this study, asphalts were modified with modifying agents and ground rubber from waste tire (GRT), and the effects of modifier and GRT on the properties of asphalt were analyzed. The Marshall stability of modified asphalt was increased by 98% and the tensile strength increased by 43% compared to straight asphalt. GRT played an important role in enhancing these properties. Viscosity tests, penetration tests and TMA analysis showed the deformation resistancy of modified asphalt. IR and GPC tests indicated that asphalt and modifier have similar chemical structures to each other, and chemical bonding between asphalt and modifier have occurred so that the molecular size lengthened.

  • This study evaluated the laboratory properties of asphalt binder and mixture modified with SPC(Sulfur Polymer Cement), which consists of sulfur as a main ingredient that is an industrial by-product made from refining process of crude oil and carbon-black as an additive. Four levels of SPC modifier ratios(0, 10, 30, 50%) were evaluated in the laboratory. Superpave(Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) system was used to determine the PG(Performance Grade) and evaluate the property of SPC modified binder at the different temperatures. IDT(Indirect Tensile Test) was performed to evaluate the resistance of fatigue and low-temperature cracking at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;-10^{\circ}C$. Wheel-tracking test was also performed to evaluate the rutting-resistance of SPC modified asphalt mixtures. Test results showed that the more SPC modifier ratios, the better rutting-resistance and the more potential of low-temperature cracking resistance. However, SPC modifier did not show the effect on the fatigue cracking resistance.

  • Oxidation causes increment of the quantity of large molecular size or LMS in asphalt and is a major reason for hardening of asphalt binder. An extended service life of pavement on a road is expected by reducing oxidation of binder. Oxidation of binder occurs during hot mixing with aggregates before placement on road and then during in-service after the asphalt pavement is constructed. Quantitative increase of LMS as result of aging after RTFO and PAV was analyzed based on the data from high-pressure gel-permeation chromatography (HP-GPC). Polymer modified asphalt (PMA) after RTFO procedure showed 20-30% increment in LMS and then after PAV procedure more than twice, although the percentage of increment was different according to asphalt brand and grade. The PMAs containing LDPE or SBS, which showed a great mechanical property improvement in previous studies, were selected for characterizing PMA aging In this study. Considerably reduced increment of LMS was observed from the PMA containing LDPE after RTFO and PAV procedures. The GPC result showing the binder with less LMS increment means that the asphalt while being mixed with LDPE was aged less during the aging treatment. The dispersed particle of LDPE in asphalt cement seems to disturb oxidative aging reaction and evaporation.

  • The pressure-sensitive adhesive(PSA) tapes are widely used as floor-sealing material in Korean constructive industry. However, the general PSA tapes can not seal the apertures completely. This is one of main reasons to cause imperfect finishing. In order to solve the problems, the asphalts were modified by FKM powder and SBS in this study. The physical properties of modified asphalts were examined by measuring the softening point, viscosity, tensile strength and adhesion strength of FKM and SBS modified asphalt. The softening point of SBS modified asphalt was increased greatly due to the formation of network structure in asphalt. Also, the change of adhesion strength of SBS modified asphalt with temperature was not so great comparing to those of pure asphalt and FKM modified asphalt. The best results of pressure-sensitive adhesion could be obtained by the SBS(linear) modified asphalt containing 6 wt.% of linear type SBS.

  • This study was performed to evaluate performance of polymer-modified asphalt mixtures and specially designed reinforcement techniques against reflection cracking of the asphalt pavement overlay. Selected polymers were used for asphalt modification and polyester fiber, a polypropylene film (vinyl) and a grid were used for mixture reinforcement. Using the asphalt mixture with optimum asphalt content, a slab was made and cut into two pieces of specimen. A layer of grid or vinyl was placed at the bottom of specimen to strengthen the pavement layer against crack. A repeated loading was applied to the asphalt mixture specimen which is Placed on a cement concrete with a pseudo-crack. Crack propagation under repeated loading was monitored and effectiveness of the devised crack retarding techniques was evaluated. From the test results. a significant retardation of mode I crack progress was monitored from some of the modified and reinforced asphalt mixtures.

  • The objective of this study is to introduce the development of the first Korean full-scale APT(Accelerated Pavement Tester) and to compare the performances of general dense grade asphalt mixture and modified asphalt mixtures as the first running of the tester. The tests evaluated the rutting resistance for dense grade mixture and three different modified asphalt mixture under three different temperature conditions (25-30, 40, $50^{\circ}C$). The results of the testing were compared with the laboratory test results. Results of the tests indicated that the all the modified asphalt sections showed higher rutting resistance than the dense grade section. Especially, the difference was more noticeable at higher temperature condition. Additionally, $G^*/sin{\delta}$ is found out to be an important factor for permanent deformation prediction whereas the resilient modulus was not.

  • We introduce a novel method that could modify neat asphalt. A polymer-forming monomer, dimethylphenol( DMP) was added to the neat asphalt and polymerization was occurred autonomously, without adding any external catalyst for the polymerization, only with oxygen molecules in the air. The polymer produced in the asphalt was polyphenyleneoxide( PPO) and it enhanced the mechanical properties of the asphalt. Compared with the neat asphalt, the tenacity and toughness of the DMP-modified asphalt were two and half times and three times high, respectively.

  • Many temperature-related problems are created in asphalt pavement due to the low temperature. In particular, loss of tensile strength due to low temperature is known to be responsible for thermal failure of pavements in cold regions under $-20^{\circ}C$. The objective of this study is to evaluate characteristics of resistance against low-temperature cracking of polymer asphalt concrete mixtures modified with LDPE and SBS. The test results showed that the mixtures had the maximum indirect tensile strength(ITS) at low temperature ranging from $-10^{\circ}C. It was proved through ITS test that the stress due to differential thermal contraction over the tensile strength did generate internal damage at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the asphalt mixtures modified with polymer had better ITS than the normal asphalt mixture at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. Thus the effect of modification was revealed as tensile strength improvement. From the results of this study, it was recommended that polymer-modified asphalt should be used in order to prevent low-temperature cracking in cold region.
