  • In-flight icing remains as one of the most persistent hazards for aircraft operations. The effect of icing on aircraft performance and safety has to be evaluated during the development and airworthiness certification process. The scaling method is a procedure to determine the scaled test conditions in icing wind tunnels in order to produce the same result as when the reference model is exposed to the desired cloud conditions. In this study, a scaling program is developed to provide an easy-to-use tool to the aero-icing community. The Olsen and Ruff 4th methods are employed for this purpose and the velocity is calculated by matching the dimensionless Weber number. To validate the program, the results are compared with the NASA scaling results. The scaling examples based on FAR (Federal Aviation Regulation) Part 25 Appendix C are also presented. Finally, a validation study using a state-of-the-art icing simulation code FENSAP-ICE is presented.

  • A direct-connected, continuous type combustion test facility was developed to test a supersonic combustor model used in scramjet engines. The facility requirements were determined by assuming the flight speed of Mach 5, yielding the combustor inlet flow speed of Mach 2. Also the cross-section of the supersonic combustor under test was assumed as $32mm{\times}70mm$. As a result, the facility was designed to have the flow total pressure of 548 kPaA, total temperature of 1,320 K, and flow rate of 0.776 kg/s. The facility consists of a turbo type air compressor, electric air heater, vitiation air heater and a two dimensional facility nozzle to accelerate the flow to Mach 2. Also, an oxygen supply system was added to compensate the vitiation. The exhaust de-pressurization system is not added. Designed pressure, temperature, and flow rate were verified through the test operation of the facility.

  • As the wooden aircraft in the early times has no way to let lightning flow when lighting flash attaches during flight, the aircraft got damage, or caught fire. Though all metal airplane was developed with an advent of aluminum, a lightning accident still occurred including a fire of a fuel tanks. Eventually, NACA declared problems in 1938, and an artificial lightning test began. III succession, FAA established Airworthiness Requirements for certification. The FAA committed test measures study for the protection of an airplane from lightning to SAE. SAE presented the test current and voltage waveforms that simulating natural lightning, and it is utilized on lightning protection certification of an airplane by public. A lightning effects of an airplane through an analysis of lightning mechanism was made in this technical note. Especially, lightning direct effects on aircraft are analyzed and lightning strike zones are described.

  • Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft have several different weapon loading configuration to support air-to-air combat and air-to-ground delivery of weapon modes. These various aircraft loading conditions could result in asymmetric configurations to the aircraft once delivered. These asymmetric configurations could result in decreased handling qualities for the pilot maneuvering, stability, control issues and aerodynamic performance of the aircraft. In order to eliminate or decrease these adverse impacts on the pilot's ability, development of T-50 flight control law attempts to control the aircraft in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Especially, the design of the lateral-directional roll axis control laws, utilizing a simple roll rate feedback structure and gains such as F-16, is developed for the T-50 aircraft to meet the aircraft's design requirements. Consequently, it is found that the improved control law decreases the roll-off phenomenon in lateral axes during pitch maneuver.

  • The COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is subjected to shock loads when the stage or fairing of a launch vehicle is separated and the satellite is separated from the launch vehicle during the launch vehicle flight. And, after the satellite is separated from the launcher, the COMS is subjected to shock loads when the solar array is deployed, Ka-Band communication antenna is deployed, and meteorological imager radiator cover is released. In order to validate the satellite safety against these shock loads on ground, shock tests were performed. In this paper, the shock tests performed in the course of the COMS development are described, and the method to assess the test result is presented with an example of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI). In Ariane-5 launch vehicle, the clampband release shock for satellite separation is lower than the fairing or stage separation. In this paper, the extrapolation method to take into account the maximum shock load from the launch vehicle by using the satellite separation shock test result is also introduced.

  • CanSat Competition has been annually held in South Korea since 2012 to give students an opportunity for better understanding of system design and operation processes of satellite. SCSky CanSat(Smart Call from the Sky Can Satellite) proposed in this study is a name of CanSat that was participated in 2016 CanSat competition. Its main mission objective is to obtain flight imaging data of inside and outside the CanSat through the video call using on-board smart phone in the CanSat. To implement this mission, we developed a remote touch system using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) wire. In addition, a wide scan camera mechanism using SMA spring was developed to obtain ground imaging data during the mission. This study introduced the mission of the SCSky CanSat, as well as the description of on-board payloads, system design results, and flight test results.

  • In this study, the minimized on-board computer (OBC) module for integrated navigation is developed, which provides satellites' relative position information in formation flying and cluster operation situations. The scalability is considered to apply the user-selected wireless communication module and Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver for navigation, while considering to meet the structural design standard of nano-satellites. As a result of the product development and production, the processing speed of integrated navigation and real-time data synchronization is satisfied for cluster operation nano-satellites by using micro controller unit (MCU). From a heat/vacuum, vibration and radiation test, the OBC was confirmed to be operated in space environments. From these results, a mass production system of OBC was made which is a key part of development on satellite formation flying and cluster/constellation missions that the community demands are increasing.

  • As air combat system technologies developed in recent years, the development of air defense systems is required. In the operating concept of the anti-aircraft defense system, selecting an appropriate armament for the target is one of the system's capabilities in efficiently responding to threats using limited anti-aircraft power. Much of the flying threat identification relies on the operator's visual identification. However, there are many limitations in visually discriminating a flying object maneuvering high speed from a distance. In addition, as the demand for unmanned and intelligent weapon systems on the modern battlefield increases, it is essential to develop a technology that automatically identifies and classifies the aircraft instead of the operator's visual identification. Although some examples of weapon system identification with deep learning-based models by collecting video data for tanks and warships have been presented, aerial vehicle identification is still lacking. Therefore, in this paper, we present a model for classifying fighters, helicopters, and drones using a convolutional neural network model and analyze the performance of the presented model.

  • The operational characteristics of the landing gear retraction/extension depend on the complexity of design variables operational/environmental conditions. In order to meet the requirements of minimum stow area and performance, the integration of the landing gear system requires operational kinematic and dynamic analysis considering an effect of its related system. This study investigates operational dynamic behaviors of the T-50 landing gear system using ADAMS. Taking into account for various operational/environmental conditions, an analysis of dynamic behavior on the landing gear operational characteristics is performed with experience derived from a wide range of proprietary designs. Analytical results are presented for discussing the effects of temperature, aerodynamic and maneuver load on normal/emergency operation of the landing gears and doors. This analysis leads us to the conclusion that the proposed program is shown to be a better quantitative one that apply to a new development and troubleshooting of the landing gear system.
