  • The Korean textile industry contributed much to the country's economic success during the 1970s-80s. Since the end of the 1980s, however, most of the Korean textile industry has begun to suffer from both high labor costs and skilled-labor shortage. During this period, such countries as China, Indonesia, and Malaysia began to gain strong foothold in the global textile market, mainly owing to considerably low label costs. To maintain competitiveness in the global textile market, the Korean textile industry should undergo a structural change. It should switch from the mass production of low quality design to selective praction of high quality and well-designed textiles. An cement of high value-added should be put into the textile product.: Usage of functional material, new processing technology, automation, pro-environmental dye shes, and strategic marketing is required. In this appear, I suggest ways and means to make the Korean textile design be good enough to compete in the global market.

  • This paper examines the causes of the terms of trade decline in Korea since the mid-1990s, using the decomposition methodology suggested by Baxter and Kouparitsas (2000) as well as regression analysis. The main empirical results are summarized as follows. The decomposition exercise of changes in terms of trade showed that Korea's terms of trade decline for the past decade or so is attributable to goods price effect which were driven by the rise of oil prices relative to manufactures. The decomposition of terms of trade change for 55 countries showed that terms of trade decline due to goods price effect is a phenomenon that was commonly observed for exporters of manufactures since mid-1990s. These results suggest that external factors such as China's trade expansion, rather than internal factors, are mostly responsible for the decline in terms of trade. In accordance with these results, the regression results suggest that China's trade expansion contributed to Korea's terms of trade decline, especially in 2000s, by raising the import prices of oil and raw materials and lowering the export prices of manufacturing products.

  • The aim of this study is to suggest the strategic implications for manufacturing 3.0 in Korea by reviewing an innovation approaches of German that is a source of manufacturing innovation in Europe. Today, growth potential of korean economy has been weakened by the rise of emerging economies. Furthermore, technological advantage of emerging economies has been strengthened. In this situation, Korea needs to make efforts to enhance global competitiveness. The growth of developing countries provides a new opportunities for Korea for export demand. However, this situation can be recognized as threats for Korea because Korea has to compete with those countries to expand market share. In this regard, reviewing the approaches of manufacturing innovation in German is important because German keeps remaining a high levels of competitiveness in spite of a rise of emerging economies and European recession. To do this, this research can give hints to advance the industrial policy improvements.

  • Recently, the global paradigm on the economic structure has been changed from the price-oriented borderless competition toward the sustainable quality movement due to the ever-increasing global warming and environmental issues. Since Korea hosted the global 20 summit in 2010, it has promoted the green growth policies and asked for the other countries to participate in. Unfortunately, it is not easy to figure out the green growth or green productivity because the economic performance has a side effect of environmental pollution such as CO2 emission. This paper aims to analyzes the methodological comparison for all the related issues with green productivity and suggests the new paradigm of global Malmquist-Lundberger index (GML) as the most flexible field and performance-oriented criteria to measure the green productivity.

  • Though the latest ICT technology is expected to serve as a bridgehead for future industrial development as the core of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the gap in ICT technology is still directly connected to the disparity in wealth and it is widening. Training to foster female ICT capabilities in developing countries is an opportunity to foster quality workforce for national development and a means to close the technology gap. The study aims to investigate the status of infrastructure and ICT education at UHP University in Indonesia, as a preparation for educating students in developing countries with ICT skills. Based on this survey, we develop appropriate ICT education contents for female students and provide necessary policies for ongoing education. We will seek ways to improve efficiency in education by comparing and analyzing the results of the previous research, Life University survey.

  • Republic of Korea is the first country which received international aids, h1s become a member of DAC, and recently has strengthened the international aids policy through ODA(Official Development Assistance). Korea ODA has focused on the area of education, social infrastructure, etc., but not on maritime affairs. However, since Korea has become a maritime country and a member of "A Group" council of IMO, the international shipping community including IMO strongly requests Korea to transfer Korea's maritime safety technology to developing countries for the sake of international maritime safety and marine environment protection. In this study, the direction of road map for effective transfer of maritime safety technology and marine environment protection technology was presented. The strategy for implementation of the suggested road map was proposed as well.

  • This paper discusses the types and importance of service trade. The service trade, which has become increasingly important, is shaped by the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). However, the availability of trade data is still low. The service is expected to increase the value added of the manufacturing industry and to lead the trade enhancement effect beyond the current stagnant commodity trade. Such effects are also confirmed by studies using the OECD Service Trade Restriction Index. Korea's service trade is relatively low compared to commodities's, and some items are still in a chronic deficit. In order to overcome such a situation and develop the service industry, it may be considered to pursue active service opening around major industries. It is also possible to suggest a Korea Standard that mediates between developing and developed countries.

  • The voluntary mid-term greenhouse gas(GHG) emission reduction targets for 2020 among major developed and developing countries were evaluated by using the global computable general equilibrium(CGE) model. The GHG emissions of developed countries were estimated to be reduced by 14.0% from 1990 level, which implies that the GHG reduction targets of developed countries should be strengthened to reach agreement in future post-Kyoto negotiations. The voluntary participation of developing countries for GHG emissions reduction contributed to global GHG emissions reduction by 15.9% from 1990 levels, which were led by the participation of China and India. These outcomes imply that the reinforcement of GHG emission reduction targets in developed countries and the wider participation of developing countries will be necessary for the environmental effectiveness of the post-Kyoto regime. Emissions reduction based on voluntary targets will decrease the global real GDP by 1.18%.

  • Train speed control is a vital part of train protection to build safe movement at an operation track. There is a special condition of track that needs more attention to protect the train, for example in slope area. Moreover, in developing country with vandalism problem, it requires to install minimalized equipment on the trackside. In addition, in tropical country, on tracksides it will be potentially pooling water that influences to the performance of trackside equipment. To address these problems, we propose the train speed control for slope area using infrared system. By installing on the pole configuration, the system offers a less challenging, economically sensible, minimalized installation of equipment on the trackside and reliability for heavy rain environment. This paper concentrates on the controlling train speed and measurement performance evaluation in slope area. The proposed train speed control system can monitor and control the speed in sloping area with maximum 3.6% and controlled speed about 20 km per h.

  • Domestic large group logistics company(2nd-party logistics company)has made inroads on large portion of domestic logistics market, whereby the domestic 3rd-party logistics market has been shrinking every year to a level of 30% or so. Global logistics enterprise is steadily increasing 3rd-party global market portion while Local one facing with stagnating growth has very minimal level in the global market share. Fortunately new government strengthening policy change toward local SME and also recent UN's supplying line enlargement to Asia regions are positive factors which make Local SME very positive environments to advance to UN procurement logistics market. On this occasion, the purpose of this paper is to help local logistics company perform successful bidding through study of UN-transportation case and also suggest in SWOT analysis a segmented measure and support policy between Industry, Academia, Government and Institute.
