  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of portfolio on the organization and the quantity of the students’ science concepts. Two fourth grade classes were selected from an elementary school in Pyungtaek-shi, Kyunggi-do, and one class is assigned to experimental group, the other control group. Experimental group received portfolio teaching, and control group received conventional instruction. The effects of portfolio teaching were investigated with students’ mind maps. Students participated had training to develop mind maps, and developed mind maps four times during learning two units, strata and fossils, and change by heat. Mind maps developed by students were scored and analyzed with SPSS. The class with portfolio instruction showed higher scores than control group. In conclusion, the portfolio teaching enhances the organization and the quantity of students’ science concepts.

  • This study aims to explore concepts of public interest and universal service which have been essential ideologies and policy goals, but which have been a the state of conceptual chaos so far. It sheds light upon three aspects : (1) the origins of public interest and universal service, (2) conceptual components of public interest and universal service, and (3) the implementation of public interest and universal service ideologies into policy. As a result of this analysis, it was found, firstly, that public interest of broadcasting originated from western countries, was rooted in the United States, and then spread all over the world later. After universal service was begun in the United States, it became a key ideology of information and telecommunication in European countries and other countries as well. Secondly, when examining the conceptual components, more differences were found than commonalities between these two concepts. The most conspicuous common point was universalism The concept of public interest includes not only universal service, but also connotes other components such as independence, diversity, quality, and locality which are related to content. Thirdly, when these two ideologies are implemented into policy, there Is a contrast. This study shows that the public interest ideology was realized into regulatory policies, while the universal service ideology was realized into supportive policies. In conclusion, this paper suggests more exact usage academically, showing the differences between the two concepts. This paper recommends an enforced legal duty of broadcasters to provide universal service when the current broadcasting law is revised.

  • Bob Hale recently proposed a theory of real numbers based on abstraction principles. In his theory, real numbers are regarded as ratios of quantities and the criteria of identities of ratios of quantities are given by an Eudoxan ratio principle. The reason why Hale defines real numbers as ratios of quantities is that he wants to satisfy Frege's requirement that arithmetical concepts should be defined to be adequate for their universal applicability. In this paper I show why Hale's explanation of applications of real numbers fails to satisfy Frege's requirement, and I propose an alternative explanation. At first I show that there are some gaps between his explanation of the concept of quantity and his stipulation of domains of quantities, and that those gaps give rise to some difficulties in his explanation of applications of real numbers. Secondly I introduce a new ratio principle which can be applied to any kinds of quantities, and I argue that it allows us an adequate explanation of the reason why real numbers as ratios of quantities can be universally applicable. Finally I enquire into some procedures of the measurement of quantities, and I propose some principles which we should presuppose in order to successfully apply real numbers to the measurement of quantities.

  • At what point in the process of speech production are gestures involved? According to the Lexical Retrieval Hypothesis, gestures are involved in the lexicalization in the formulating stage. According to the Information Packaging Hypothesis, gestures are involved in the conceptual planning of massages in the conceptualizing stage. We investigated these hypotheses, using the game situation in a TV program that induced the players to involve in both lexicalization and conceptualization simultaneously. The transcription of the verbal utterances was augmented with all arm and hand gestures produced by the players. Coverbal gestures were classified into two types of gestures: lexical gestures and motor gestures. As a result, concrete words elicited lexical gestures significantly more frequently than abstract words, and abstract words elicited motor gestures significantly more frequently than concrete words. The difficulty of conceptualization in concrete words was significantly correlated with the amount of lexical gestures. However, the amount of words and the word frequency were not correlated with the amount of both gestures. This result supports the Information Packaging Hypothesis. Most of all, the importance of motor gestures was inferred from the result that abstract words elicited motor gestures more frequently rather than concrete words. Motor gestures, which have been considered as unrelated to verbal production, were excluded from analysis in many gestural studies. This study revealed motor gestures seemed to be connected to the abstract conceptualization.

  • Protection against non-ionizing radiation(NIR) is the subject of an increasing interest but the use of very different concepts depending on the type of radiation or application, makes it rather difficult to compile studies and the data obtained in an uniformity in this field. The main object of the present paper is to summarizes and provide an inventory of concepts, quantities, units and terminology currently used for purposes of NIR protection. Furthermore a systematic classification and comparison of these quantities is given, and in particular the concepts used to quantify exposure limitation and radiation protection standards are summarized and discussed.
