  • Chinese crude drug 'Kang Whal' has been used mainly as a headache in common cold, rheumatic arthralgia and aching of the back and shoulder. To clarify the botanical origin of Kang Whal from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Ostericum koreanum Maxim. and Notopterygium incisium Ting ex H.T.Chang were studied. As a result, it was clarified that Kang Whal from Korea was the underground part of Ostericum koreanum.

  • Silica gel column chromatography on the ether extract from the fruits of Angelica koreana $M_{AXIMOWICZ}$ gave two kinds of crystalline products of coumarin. The following furocoumarins-imperatorin and bergapten has been identified by elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectra and physico-chemical tests.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of callus induction and plant regeneration from immature inflorescence, stem and petiole of A. koreana MAX. which is worth enough to be used as food and medicine. The callus induction and its proliferation was best when immature inflorescence segments were placed on MS medium supplemented with 2, 4-D 2mg / l. The white and compact embryogenic callus on the surface of dark yellow and soft callus which was induced from immature inflorescence segments came into being only on MS medium with 2, 4-D 1mg /l and 2mg /l, but didn't come into being on the other ones. The shoot came into being effectively from callus derived from immature inflorescence on MS medium mixed 2, 4-D 0. 1mg /l with Kinetin 1mg /l, and 2, 4-D 0.5mg /1 with Kinetin 2mg /l. Immature inflorescence was most appropriate material for callus induction and plant regeneration.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum transplanting time of Ostericum koreanum Kit. cultivating under root apex propagation. Transplanting time per 10 days were from March 20th to May 1st. The results are follows : Soil chemical properties before experiment were well adapted upland including moderate fertility. Average temperatures during cropping seasons except March late were lower than normal years, but rainfall was abundant than that of normal years. The ratios of emergence and bolting were higher in the faster transplanting time. And also plant height, stem length and number of stem were well. Yield components of transplanted April 1st were well, and yield was 251 kg/10a. The yield was increased by 13% than that of March 20th. So optimum transplanting time is considered about April 1st.

  • Essential oil of the root of Angelica koreana Max. (Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain nine monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene$(7.0%), camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, ${\alpha}-phellandrene$, ${\Delta}-3-carene$, p-cymene, limonene(2.8%), terpinolene and also found to contain m-cresol(11.6%), citronellol, citral b, methylcinnamate, eudesmol and osthol. 2-Hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone and twelve compounds were tentatively identified.
