  • This study is to consider the character of cables in six World-Cup stadiums constructed in 2002 and to inspect problems on measurement natural frequencies interpretation and application of existing theory. The results of the experiment were shown that it was possible to determine the tension force of the real cables with an accuracy of 8% by taking the cable bending stiffness. But for the range of cable affected greatly by bending stiffness(${\xi}{\leq}7$), it was appeared the tendency to increase estimated error and was considered to need additional study of this range. Estimated tension error could not be improved so much in comparison to the case using single mode of vibration even through multiple modes of vibration were used.

  • The urban railway sleeper floating track, the subject of this study, is an anti-vibration track to reduce vibration transmitted to the structure. currently, the replacement cycle of resilience pad for sleeper floating tracks is set and operated based on load. however, most previous studies were conducted on load-based structural safety aspects, such as fatigue life evaluation of sleeper anti-vibration pads and increase in track impact coefficient and track support stiffness due to increase in spring stiffness. therefore, in this study, we measure the vibration acceleration of the ballast for each analysis section and use the results of 7 million fatigue tests to calculate the spring stiffness of the resilience pad for each section. the spring stiffness of the resilience pad calculated for each section was set as the analysis data and the concrete vibration acceleration was derived analytically. the adequacy of analysis modeling was verified as the analyzed concrete bed vibration acceleration for each section was within the field-measured concrete bed vibration acceleration range. using the vibration acceleration curve according to the derived spring stiffness change, the spring stiffness of the resilience pad is estimated from the measured vibration acceleration. therefore, we would like to present a technique that can estimate the spring stiffness of resilience pad of a running track using the vibration acceleration of the measured concrete bed.

  • This paper presents the results of numerical investigation on support mechanism of geogrid-encased stone columns for use in soft ground. A number of cases were analyzed using a axial-and 3D stress-pore pressure coupled model that can effectively model construction sequence and drainage as well as reinforcing effects of geogrid-encased stone columns. The results indicated that the geogrid encasement tends to significantly improve the load carrying of a stone column. Also revealed was that such a confinement effect depends on encasement length and stiffness of geogrid. It is also shown that there exist critical encasement length and stiffness of geogrid for a given condition.

  • A series of model tests were conducted to investigate how the number of reinforcement layers, stiffnesses, types of reinforcement material and buried depth of a flexible pipe can affect bearing capacity-settlement curve at a loose sand foundation. In the test results, whereas the type of failure in unreinforced sand was local shear, the type of failure, for model tests with more than 2 reinforcement layers in loose sand, was general shear: The number of the optimum reinforcement layers was found to be two: Stiffness and type of reinforcement were more important than the maximum tensile strength of reinforcement in improving bearing capacity. When the depth of buried pipe from the sand surface was less than the width of the footing, test results showed that both bearing capacity and ultimate bearing capacity of buried pipe in unreinforced sand significantly decreased, and the type of failure in the reinforced sand changed from general shear to local shear.

  • Mudstone has characteristics that it has high enough strength and stiffness in a dry condition, but the strength and stiffness decrease in a wet condition with groundwater infiltration. The sliding of cut slope frequently encountered in Pohang area has been reported due to the rapid reduction of shear strength in mudstone after being exposed to the air. The study in this paper shows that mudstone having enough strength in a boring stage has lost the strength after installing PRD (percussion rotary drill) steel pipe pile inducing an insufficient bearing capacity. Field test has been performed to investigate the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone with various methods such as MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) around the tip and side of a pile, the perimeter grouting combined with Micro pile reinforcement, and concrete filling after tip reinforcing grouting. MSG has been turned out to be the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone, confirmed by the static load test.

  • The lateral bearing characteristics are important factors in the case of large diameter drilled shafts and the measures to increase this are to improve the adjacent ground of the pile to increase the rigidity and to increase the rigidity of the pile itself. There are many suggestions for increasing rigidity by reinforcing casing on the pile, but few studies have been done related to this. Therefore, in this study, the lateral bearing characteristics according to casing reinforcement length were studied for each ground condition using non-linear analysis to evaluate the appropriate casing reinforcement length of the large diameter drilled shafts depending on the ground conditions. As a result, the lateral bearing characteristics of the large diameter drilled shafts are most effective if the casing reinforcement length ratio is 1.2, and depending on the ground conditions, the more loose the ground, the greater the reinforcement effect.

  • The characteristics of noise emission from tram systems should be investigated in order to design and construct an urban tram network that raises fewer environmental noise problems. In this paper, the characteristics of rolling noise from a tram were studied and a desired stiffness of the rail supports was proposed using a noise prediction model. The mobilities of embedded rails and resilient wheels were predicted using the Timoshenko beam model and the finite element model, respectively. The predicted mobilities were compared with the measured results. Compared with the measured values, the calculated noise level near the track showed small errors for frequencies higher than 300 Hz. Then, the source strengths of rail and wheel components were examined by varying the rail supporting stiffness and the slab supporting stiffness so that suitable stiffness values could be estimated that would reduce noise radiated from rails and wheels but that would not greatly increase the ground vibration.

  • The transition is the zone where support stiffness suddenly increases in the railway industry. If the support stiffness increases, differential settlement will occur at the transition due to difference of stiffness, and the differential settlement causes problems for the train running safety and the roadbed that supports the track. In particular, a study on differential settlement at bridge-earthwork transition was only conducted to considering railway load in most cases. However, these studies have not taken account of earthquake despite earthquake has been occurred frequently in the recent, and it is necessary to consider earthquake. Therefore, in this study numerical analysis has been performed by changing the inclination of approach block, which determines the shape of the transition, and earthwork in order to verify the effect of the shape of the transition on the dynamic behavior at the bridge-earthwork transition. The result shows that the dynamic behavior at the bridge-earthwork transition was affected by the shape of transition.

  • P-${\Delta}$ analysis by use of the equivalent colurnn stiffness determined by Momcnt curvature-Thrust curves provides relatively precise analytical results for unbraced reinforced concrete columns, however it needs a complicated arialytical procedure. Equ~valent col~rnn stiffness equations are proposed for a simple analytical procedure which are ckterrnined by the Moment-Curvature Thrust curves of the practically useable sections. Thc proposed stiffness equations are appiled to P-${\Delta}$ analysis and rnornent magnifier method to compare with the selected test result. Use of the proposed stiffness equations may slrnplify the P-${\Delta}$ i.rialvtica1 procedure and improve the accuracy of moment magnifier niethod.
