  • This paper described a results of dynamic stability by using wheel tracking test and unconfined compression test, in order to evaluate behavior characteristics on the developed pocketable expansion material for emergency restoration of ground cavity. The wheel tracking test result showed that the settlement increment ratio of the recovered ground by the expansion material was decreased compared to the sandy ground in high load condition. That is, it was confirmed that the expansion material was able to restrain the settlement due to the material stiffness, and the same results were obtained for the dynamic stability evaluation results. From the results of unconfined compression test, the pocketable expansion material was found to be able to fully support load on the restored cavity.

  • Recently, many researches on bottom ash which is produced in the burning process of power plant are actively performed for its utilization for soil-subbase materials. In this paper, bottom ashes from 5 different power plants are prepared and several tests including compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression are carried out for mixed bottom ash and weathered soil considering 3 replacement ratio of 30%, 50%, and 70%. Through the tests, CBR result over 20 are evaluated without plastic property, which shows availability of subbase material. With higher increase in replacement ratio of bottom ash, CBR of mixed soil increases due to the higher mechanical performance of bottom ash. However, replacement effects of bottom ash on friction angle and cohesion are evaluated to be little since bottom ash plays a little role in rearrangement of mixed soil. Bottom ash with a good mechanical property is evaluated to have reasonable bearing capacity which shows a good property for subbase materials.

  • The differential settlement between the foundations causes the critical damage on the transmission tower constructed in soft ground. Connected-pile foundation for transmission tower structures is an option to prevent the differential settlement. It consists of main foundations and connection beams that are placed between the individual foundations at each corner of tower. In this study, 24 model pile load tests were conducted at a construction site in jeonlabuk-do to investigate the effects of the connection beams on transmission tower foundation. In model tests, various load conditions and connection beam conditions were considered. As the test results, the displacements of connected-pile foundation differed in accordance with load directions. The settlements of connected-pile foundation decreased with the increased stiffness of connection beams, lateral load capacity decreased in accordance with load height, and the lateral load capacity on the failure criteria was similar regardless of load direction.

  • Most of energy are obtained from oil, coal, and natural gas, most likely, fossil fuel which is limited throughout the world. Recently, high crude oil price, climate change, oil depletion, etc. are main reason to get attention to non-fossil energy including renewable energy in the world. In this study, we studied analysis and design of structure system composed of pultruded fiber reinforced polymer composite (PFRP) which has many advantages such as high specific strength and stiffness, high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance. For the design and construction of floating-type structure, PFRP structural members may be the first choice. Design of tracking-type floating PV generation structure was performed by using the results of the finite element analysis. The structure is fabricated and installed on the water surface. Before the installation of the structure, safety related problems associated with installation and operation are investigated using the finite element simulation and it was found that the structure is safe enough to resist externally applied loads.

  • In spacecraft system, structure subsystem has the mission of supporting all the components safely under various space environmental conditions. The safety of spacecraft structure is finally verified from the coupled load analysis, which is a branch of load analysis which combines the launch vehicle and satellite. This study introduces the optimization algorithm to reduce the weight of spacecraft structure under launch environmental conditions directly. The acceleration responses are obtained by the introduction of coupled load analysis, which lead to check the failure of spacecraft structural members. The results show a 12% saving of structural weight and this saving is mainly driven by the thickness of honeycomb core, which strongly affects the natural frequencies of platforms and panels.

  • For the safety of aircraft and accuracy of bombs, many companies have researched the new concept of adaptive kit to flying-bombs. For the long distance flying, it's normally used deployed high-aspect ratio wing because of limited volume. The probabilities of large elastic deformation and flutter are increased due to decreased stiffness of high-aspect ratio wing. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics and computational structure dynamics interaction methodology are applied for prediction of aerodynamic characteristics. FLUENT and ABAQUS are used to calculate fluid and structural dynamics. Code-bridge was made base on the compactly supported radial basis function to execute interpolation and mapping. There are some differences between rigid body and fluid-structure interaction analysis which are results of aerodynamics characteristics due to structural deformation. Small successive vibration was observed by interaction.

  • This study is focused on the investigation of the modal characteristics of the preliminary models of science technology satellite-3 (STSAT-3). Prior to the final decision of the composite structure model, several candidate structure models have been developed so as to find the most qualified structures with respect to the satellite structure systems' requirements and then utilize the information achieved to a real design. The main structure is composed of fiber reinforced composite faced honeycomb sandwich panel whose modal characteristics are found and compared to each other by means of finite element numerical analyses. Results from the current study demonstrate that a rectangular box shape having supporting inner panel shows relatively higher fundamental mode frequencies than octagonal box shape and etc., and regardless of the structure model shape tested herein, the fundamental mode turns out lateral bending mode.

  • For stiffened plates composed of composite materials, many researchers have used a finite element method which connected isoparametric plate elements and beam elements. However, the finite element method is difficult to reflect local behavior of stiffener because beam elements are transferred stiffness for nodal point of plate elements, especially the application is limited in case of laminated composite structures. In this paper, for analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates, 3D shell elements for stiffener and plate are employed. Reissner-Mindlin's first order shear deformation theory is considered in this study. But when thickness will be thin, isoparamatric plate bending element based on the theory of Reissner-Mindlin is generated by transverse shear locking. To eliminate the shear locking and virtual zero energy mode, the substitute shear strain field is used. A deflection distribution is investigated for simple supported rectangular and skew stiffened laminated composite plates with arbitrary orientation stiffener as not only variation of slenderness and aspect ratio of the plate but also variation of skew angle of skew stiffened plates.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the early-age behavior and performance of precast pavements constructed by replacing existing asphalt pavements for an intersection in urban bus only lanes. The monitoring items included level differences between asphalt pavement and precast panels at the beginning and ending locations of the precast pavement, level differences and joint widths between precast panels, precast panel settlement, and skid resistance of the panel surface. At a certain time after the construction, the diamond grinding method was applied and its effect was also investigated. The monitoring results showed that as time went by, the panel level, joint width, settlement, and skid resistance were not much varied. That implied the stable sustaining of external loads by the precast pavements. In addition, it was verified that employing diamond grinding could reduce the level differences between precast panels.

  • Joints are provided in cement concrete pavements to control transverse and longitudinal cracking that occur due to restrained deformations caused by moisture and temperature variations in the slab. But the constuction of joints reduces the load-carrying capacity of the pavement at the joints, and pavements have been deteriorated by cracks at the slab edges along the joints due to traffic loads. Therefore, it is important to analyze the behavior of joints accurately in the design of cement concrete pavements. In this study, the mechanical behavior of cement concrete pavement slabs is analyzed by the plate-finite element model, and Winkler foundation model is adopted to analyze the subgrades. The load transfer mechan¬ism of joints are composed of dowel action, aggregate interlocking, and tied-key action, and the analytical pro¬gram is developed using these joint models. Using this numerical model as an analysis tool, the effects of joint parameters on the behavior of pavements are investigated.
