  • This paper is considered on the dynamic behavior and the dynamic impact coefficient on the cable-stayed bridge under the vehicle load. The method of static analysis, that is, the transfer matrix method is used to get influence values about displacements, section forces of girder and cable forces. Gotten influence values were used as basic data to analyse dynamic behavior. This paper used the transfer matrix method because it is relatively simpler than the finite element method, and calculating speed of computer is very fast and the precision of computation is high. In the process of dynamic analysis, the uncoupled equation of motion is derived from simultaneous equation of the motion of cable-stayed bridge and vehicle travelling by using mode shape, which was borne from system of undamped free vibration. The solution of the uncoupled equation of motion, that is, time history of response of deflections, velocity and acceleration on reference coordinate system, is found by Newmark-${\beta}$ method, a kind of direct integral method. After the time history of dynamic response was gotten, and it was transfered to the time history of dynamic response of cable-stayed bridge by linear transformation of coordinates. As a result of this numerical analysis, effect of dynamic behavior for cable-stayed bridge under the vehicle load has varied depending on parameter of design, that is, the ratio of span, the ratio of main span length, tower height, the flexural rigidity of longitudinal girder, the flexural rigidity of tower, and the cable stiffness, investigated. Very good agreements with the existing solution in the literature are shown for the uncracked plate as well as the cracked plate.

  • Hardness of rubbery materials, which is important for dimensional stability and product performance, was investigated upon temperature change in this study. A newly developed IRHD (International Rubber Hardness Degree) tester was used to measure the hardness changes of NR and SBR specimens at various temperatures and the hardness values were compared with the Young's modulus. The harness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR showed an abrupt change near the glass transition temperatures. The hardness and Young's modulus were increased by increasing temperature due to the increased random chain conformation of molecules. The effect of temperature on hardness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR specimens filled with carbon black and silica was decreased by increasing filler content.

  • In this study, vibration properties of seat and human body are analyzed through test and numerical analysis methods by taking into account the viscoelastic characteristics of polyurethane foam as seat material which is applied for vehicle. These viscoelastic characteristics which show nonlinear and quasi-static behavior are obtained by compression test. In addition, the viscous elastic property of polyurethane foam is modelled mathematically by using convolution integral and nonlinear stiffness model. In order to analyze the performance on ride comfort of seat, vertical vibration model is established by using dynamic model of seat and vertical vibration model of human body at ISO5982, and so the related motion equations are derived. A numerical analysis simulation is applied by using the nonlinear motion equation with Runge-Kutta integral method. The dynamic responses of seat and human body on the input of vibration acceleration measured at the floor of the railway vehicle are examined. The variation of the index value at ride comfort on seat design parameters is analyzed and the methodology on seat design is suggested.

  • The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a widely used model organism in biological research. Thanks to the availability of well-established knowledge about its neural connectivity, a wide range of studies have been attempted to uncover the relationship between behaviors and the responsible neurons. In our research, the adaptive behavior of C. elegans in solid environments with different surface rigidities is investigated, where the worm adapts to different mechanical stiffnesses by modulating its crawling waveform. The amplitude and wavelength of the crawling waveform decrease as the environment becomes more rigid. Interestingly, the mechanosensation-defective mutant shows different responses to the surface rigidity compared to those of the wild-type worm. To explain the adaptation process in mechanically different environments, we suggest a plausible neural circuit model.

  • This paper presents a seismic fragility analysis method for a cable-stayed bridge with energy dissipation devices. Model uncertainties represented by random variables include input ground motions, characteristics of energy dissipation devices and the stiffness of cable-stayed bridge. Using linear regression, we established demand models for the fragility analysis from the relationship between maximum responses and the intensity of input ground motions. For capacity models, we considered the moment and shear force of the main tower, longitudinal displacement of the girder, deviation of the stay cables tension and the local buckling of the main steel tower as the limit states for cable-stayed bridge. As a numerical example, fragility analysis results for the 2nd Jindo bridge are presented. The effect of energy dissipation devices is also briefly discussed.

  • When catilever beams rotate about axes perpendicular to the underformed beam's longitudinal axis, their bending stiffnesses change due to the stretching caused by centrifugal inertia forces. Such phenomena result in variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes associated with constant speed rotational motions of the beams. These variations are important in many practical applications such as helicopter blades, turbomachines, and space structures. This paper presents the formulation of a set of linear equations governing the lateral motion of rotating cantilever beams. These equations can be used to provide accurate predictions of the variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes associated with constant speed rotational motions of the beams. These variations are important in many practical applications such as helicopter blades, turbomachines, and space structures. This paper presents the formulation of a set of linear equations governing the lateral motion of rotating cantilever beams. These equations can be used to provide accurate predictions of the variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes due to rotation. This technique is simpler and more consistent than other conventional techniques which are commonly used in the literature.

  • There are many types of reduction drives for industrial applications. In general, high precision speed reducer which has a cycloid or involute teeth profile, used to in robot. Because, it is essential to use precision reduction drives for accuracy of position control on robot system. In this paper, we propose a robot speed reducer(RSR) with straight line teeth profile, which has basically a triangle teeth profile. In new straight line teeth profile, we have a good result for strength, stress and stiffness by using finite element analysis and the results indicate that variation of eccentric coefficient affects the optimal tooth motion, and it can lower the stress and noise.

  • Main sources of the nitration of a gear-pair system are backlash and transmission error, the difference between required and actual rotation during gear meshing. This paper presents the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of gear motions due to the existence of backlash and periodic variation of meshing stiffness, which is assumed as a one-term harmonic component. Gear motions are classified as three types with the consideration of backlash. Each response is calculated using the harmonic balance method and confirmed by numerical integration. The responses with the increase of the rotating speed show abrupt changes in its magnitude for the variation of the preload, exciting force, and damping coefficient. The result also shows that there is a chaotic motion with some specific design parameters and operating conditions In gear diving system. Consequently the design of gear driving system with low nitration and noise requires the study on the effects of nonlinear dynamic characteristics due to stiffness variation and backlash.

  • This study investigated the compressive Young's modulus and the impactinduced damage of CFRP angle-ply laminate under same impact energy condition. The specimens of angle-ply laminate composites [0.deg.$_{6}$/ .theta..deg.$_{10}$/ 0.deg.$_{6}$] with .theta..deg. =30.deg., 45.deg., 60.deg. and 90.deg. were employed, and damaged by steel balls of diameter of 5mm and 10mm propelled by air gun type impact testing machine. The impact damaged zones were observed through a scanning acoustic microscope(SAM), and their cross-sections were observed through a scanning electron microscope(SEM). The compressive Young's moduli before and after impact were measured, and compared with the theoretical values calculated. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The damage areas on the interfacial boundaries showed more severe change on the back side interface than on the impact side interface with increasing ply-angle. (2) The damage areas on the interfacial boundaries became larger with increasing impact velocity or ply-angle. (3) The impact damaged zone showed the delamination on the interfacial boundaries and transverse cracks inside laminas. (4) The impact damaged zone was affected by the impactor size and speed or ply-angle under same impact energy condition. (5) Compressive Young's moduli before and after impact were lower than theoretical value, but showed a similar change according to ply-angle. (6) Compressive Young's moduli after impact were higher than those before impact, but there was no remarkable change in apparent compressive modulus after impact.t.act.
