This study introduces a layered sectional analysis for a PSC girder with a vaiable cross section and curved tendons. To consider the shear equilibrium at a concrete layer with curved tendons, the shear stress distribution has been computed at each section. In addition, to improve the convergence to the solution, a system identification technique is newly adopted in the solution process for strain computation. To examine the feasibility of the proposed approach, a static load test has been conducted for a full scale PSC girder with variable cross section. The prediction shows a good agreement with experiment. It is seen that a uniform cross section has the same moment capacity with a variable cross section while the variable cross section has more shear capacity than the uniform cross section. It is also noted that the maximum displacement of a variable cross section is a little smaller than a uniform cross section.
A new non-destructive fatigue prediction model of the composite laminates is developed. The natural frequencies of fatigue-damaged laminates under extensional loading are related to the fatigue life of the laminates by establishing the equivalent flexural stiffness reduction as a function of the elastic properties of sublaminates. The flexural stiffness is derived by relating the 90-ply elastic modulus reduction, and using the laminate plate theory to the degraded elastic modulus and the intact elastic modulus of other laminates. The natural frequency reduction model, in which the dominant fatigue mode can be identified from the sensitivity scale factors of sublaminate elastic properties, provides natural frequency vs. fatigue cycle curves for the composite laminates. Vibration tests were also conducted on $[{90}_2/0_2]_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates to verify the natural frequency reduction model. Correlations between the predictions of the model and experimental results are good.
This paper presents experimental results of a series of 1-g shaking table model tests performed on end-bearing single piles and pile groups to investigate the effect of particle size on the dynamic behavior of soil-pile systems. Two soil-pile models were tested twice: first using Jumoonjin sand, and second using Australian Fine sand. In the case of single-pile models, the lateral displacement was almost within 1% of pile diameter which corresponds to the elastic range of the pile. The back-calculated p-y curves show that the subgrade reaction of the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground was larger than that of the Australian Fine-sand-model ground at the same displacement. This phenomenon means that the stress-strain behavior of Jumoonjin sand was initially stiffer than that of Australian Fine sand. This difference was also confirmed by resonant column tests and compression triaxial tests. And the single pile p-y backbone curves of the Australian fine sand were constructed and compared with those of the Jumoonjin sand. As a result, the stiffness of the p-y backbone curves of Jumunjin sand was larger than those of Australian fine sand. Therefore, using the same p-y curves regardless of particle size can lead to inaccurate results when evaluating dynamic behavior of soil-pile system. In the case of the group-pile models, the lateral displacement was much larger than the elastic range of pile movement at the same test conditions in the single-pile models. The back-calculated p-y curves in the case of group pile models were very similar in both sands because the stiffness difference between the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground and the Australian Fine-sand-model ground was not significantly large at a large strain level, where both sands showed non-linear behavior. According to a series of single pile and group pile test results, the evaluation group pile effect using the p-multiplier can lead to inaccurate results on dynamic behavior of soil-pile system.

Dynamic behaviors of the tunnel linings of curved tunnels with various curvatures are investigated to examine the effect of wind loads due to passing vehicles. In the case without backfill, the responses of the tunnel lining should be considered to examine the clearance of the lining. A steel tunnel lining is selected to see the influence of the wind load upon the tunnel lining more clearly. The wind pressure upon the lining is simplified into the pressure and suction while the vehicle passing the loading positions. As the radius of curvature decreases, the response decreases, showing that the strength against the deformation is found to increase since the asymmetry of the deformation shape is reduced. It is found that the responses increase as the passing vehicle speed increases.

The differential quadrature method (DQM) for a system of coupled differential equations governing the elastic stability of thin-walled curved members is presented, and is applied to computation of the eigenvalues of out-of-plane buckling of curved beams subjected to uniformly distributed radial loads including a warping contribution. Critical loads with warping, which were found to be significant, are calculated for a single-span wide-flange beam with various end conditions, opening angles, and stiffness parameters. The results are compared with the exact methods available. New results are given for the case of both ends clamped and clamped-simply supported ends without comparison since no data are available The differential quadrature method gives good accuracy and stability compared with previous theoretical results.

A correlation between fatigue damage and acousto-ultrasonic (AU) parameters has been obtained from signals acquired during fatigue loading of the single-lap joints of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates and A16061 plate. The correlation showed an analogy to those representing the stiffness reduction $(E/E_0)$ of polymer matrix composites by the accumulation of fatigue damage. This has been attributed to the transmission characteristics of acoustic wave energy through bonded joints with delamination-type defects and their influence on the change of spectral content of AU signals. Another correlation between fatigue cycles and the spectral magnitude of acoustic emission (AE) signals has also been found during the final stage of fatigue loading. Both AU and AE can be applied almost in real-time to monitor the evolution of damage during fatigue loading.

This paper deals with geometrical non-linear analyses of the tapered variable-arc-length beam, subjected to the combined load with an end moment and a point load. The beam is supported by a hinged end and a frictionless sliding support so that the axial length of the deformed beam can be increased by its load. Cross sections of the beam whose flexural rigidities are functionally varied with the axial coordinate. The simultaneous differential equations governing the elastica of such beam are derived on the basis of the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. These differential equations are numerically solved by the iteration technique for obtaining the elastica of the deformed beam. For validating theories developed herein, laboratory scaled experiments are conducted.

Curved beam structures are generally used as components in structures such as railroad bridges and vehicles. The stability analysis of curved beams has been studied by a large number of researchers. Due to the complexities of structural components, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution for any boundary conditions. In order to overcome these difficulties, the differential quadrature method (DQM) has been applied for a large number of cases. In this study, DQM was used to solve the complicated partial differential equations for buckling analysis of curved beams. The governing differential equation was deduced and solved for beams subjected to uniformly distributed radial loads. Critical loads were calculated with various opening angles, boundary conditions, and parameters. The results of the DQM were compared with exact solutions for available cases, and the DQM gave outstanding accuracy even when only a small number of grid points was used. Critical loads were also calculated for the in-plane inextensional buckling of the asymmetric curved beams, and two theories were compared. The study of a beam with extensibility of the arch axis shows that the effects on the critical loads are significant.

In this study, the car crash analysis that simulates the crushing behavior of car forestructure during a frontal impact is carried out. The analysis model for front impact of a car consists of the lumped mass and the spring model. The characteristics value of masses and springs is obtained from the static analysis of a target car. The deceleration-time curve obtained from the simulation are compared with NCAP test data from the NHTSA. They show a good agreement with frontal crash test data. The deceleration-time curve of passenger compartment is classified into 3 stages; beginning stage, middle stage, and last stage. And the behavior of masses at each stage is explained. The effect of stiffness variation on deceleration of passenger compartment is resolved. The maximum loaded peak-time of torque box and dash is the main factor to control the passenger compartment's maximum deceleration.

A flexible riser consists of several layers which have different materials, shapes and functions. The layers designed properly can take the design load safely, and each property of layer provides a complexity of flexible riser. Such complexity/unit-property is an input for global analysis of flexible riser. There are several approaches to calculate the complexity of flexible riser, those are experimental, numerical and theoretical methods. This paper provides a complexity from numerical and theoretical analysis for 2.5 inch flexible riser of which details and the experimental data are already produced under tension, external pressure, and bending moment. In addition, comparison of stiffness and stress are also provided. Especially, analysis of stress could lead to researches on ultimate strength or fatigue strength of flexible risers.
