  • As urbanization progressed along with quantitative expansion of the construction industry, concrete has developed diversely as a material that is the most extensively used in the construction industry. However, aggregate resources that are an essential element of concrete production are gradually being depleted and the phenomenon of aggregate shortage has been intensifying due to the reinforcement of regulations on environmental issues. Therefore, in the present study, environment friendly mortar was made by replacing aggregate with mud that is dumped when dredging sand is dumped. To identify the dynamic characteristics of the mortar and to identify its fire resistance efficiency, the mortar was heated and its residual compressive strength was measured. In the results, the residual compressive strength values of MM1, MM2, and MM3 were 45%, 95%, and 57.7% respectively and the mix MM2 showed the highest fire resistance efficiency.

  • Autogenous shrinkage, a significant contributor of early-age cracking of high strength concrete (HSC), must be avoided or minimized from an engineering point of view. Therefore, it is necessary to study how to reduce and to predict autogenous shrinkage with respect to tile control of early-age cracking. In this study, autogenous shrinkage of HSC with various water-binder ratio (W/B) ranging from 0.50 to 0.27 and fly ash content of 0, 10, 20, and 30% were investigated. Based on the test results, thereafter, a prediction model for autogenous shrinkage was proposed. Test results show that autogenous shrinkage increased and more rapidly developed with decreasing the W/B. Also, the higher fly ash contents, the smaller autogenous shrinkage. In particular, even if much autogenous shrinkage occurs at very early-ages, stress may not be developed while the stiffness of concrete is low. In order to consider the change of concrete stiffness, the transition time referred as stiffening threshold, was obtained by monitoring of ultrasonic pulse velocity evolution and considered in the autogenous shrinkage model. From a practical point of view, the proposed model can be effectively used to predict autogenous shrinkage and to estimate stress induced by autogenous shrinkage.

  • This paper studies the field applicability of the Special Chemical grouting Method (SCM) in reinforcing and reducing permeability of the back of an existing continuous wall. SCM uses double rod which imposes intermediate pressure ($981{\sim}9,810kPa$) to disturb, cut, discharge, and mix the ground. It is observed that a bulb is formed by using cement paste and environmentally friendly injection materials with minimal alkali leaching. Uniaxial compression tests, test for chemical properties and fish poison test are performed. Test results indicate that the method results in higher durability, less leaching through the use of the environmentally friendly injection material and faster mobilization of the strength. In addition, field tests confirm the formation of the bulb and the seepage cutoff wall.

  • This research studied production of lightweight filling production for sink hole restoration utilizing various industrial by-products(2kinds of fly ash, petro-cokes CFBC ash, blast furnace slag fine particle). For this purpose, the mixed raw material properties(compressive strength) behaviors according to the blending ratio of industrial by-products were examined by applying the experimental design method and statistical analysis was performed using the commercial program MINITAB. Compressive strengths of industrial by-products were strongly dependent on blast furnace slag powder. Compressive strength(3days aging) was 3~11MPa depending on the amount of blast furnace slag powder used. The use of CFBC fly ash was evaluated to have the least effect on compressive strength. In addition, the compressive strength and the coefficient of permeability were measured by preparing foamed concrete for the experimental batch 1 condition in the mixture experimental design. In this case, the bulk density is 0.9 to 1.0, the apparent porosity is 30 to 50%, the compressive strength(3days old) is 1 to 2MPa, and the permeability coefficient is $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-3}cm/sec$.

  • Recently, seismic design for anchors is required, which are used for connecting structural members and non-structural and structural members. In this study, pull-out tests on the new expansion anchors which have been developed for cracked concrete. The anchors of 12 mm and 20 mm diameters were tested which are commonly used. Experiments were conducted on non-cracked concrete and cracked concrete to evaluate the seismic performance of the post-installed anchor. The experimental method complies with the specified test protocol (KCI, 2018). Three experimental variables are included in this study: presence of cracks, concrete compressive strength, and effective embedment depth. The strength of the anchors was evaluated with the characteristic capacity K5% determined from the test results incorporated with the safety of 5% fractile. The characteristic capacity K5% of the non-cracked and cracked concrete specified in KDS 14 20 54 are 9.8 and 7.0, respectively. Test results show that all groups except the three groups have higher characteristic capacity K5% than the KDS code and the nominal strengths of the tested anchors can be determined with the obtained characteristic capacity K5%.

  • Low-carbon eco-friendly precast concrete (PC) box structure has been recently was developed as an low-cost infrastructure of near-surface transit system. The concrete of PC box was manufactured by industrial byproducts such as ground granulated blast furnace (GGBF) slag, flyash and rapid-cooling electric arc furnace (EAF) oxidizing slag, its mechanical property and durability were estimated in this study. Based on the mechanical and durability tests, it is found that low-carbon eco-friendly concrete shows high initial compressive strength, more than 90% of design strength (35MPa), and high resistance to salt-attack, chemical- attack and freeze-thaw. Therefore, low-carbon eco-friendly PC box concrete technology is expected to contribute to the railway with low environmental impact.

  • In this study, the properties of no-fines polymer concrete with different polymer binder contents were evaluated. The polymer concrete was formulated using a polymeric binder (unsaturated polyester resin), fly ash, and recycled coarse aggregate (60%) and crushed coarse aggregate (40%). The polymeric binder content (4.0-6.0wt.%) was used as an experimental variable because it dramatically affects both the cost-effectiveness and material properties. The results showed that the density, compressive strength, flexural strength both before and after exposure to freezing and thawing increased as the polymer binder content increased, while the absorption, void ratio, permeable voids, coefficient of permeability, and acid resistance (mass loss by acid attack) decreased as the polymeric binder content increased. In particular, even though the void ratio was 18.4% and the water permeability coefficient was 7.3mm/sec, the compressive strength and flexural strength were as high as 38.0MPa and 10.0MPa, respectively, much more significant than those of previous studies. Other properties such as absorption and acid resistance were also found to be excellent. The results appear to be rooted in the increased adhesion of the binder by adding a cross-linking agent and the surface hydrophobicity of the polymer.

  • Adfreeze bond strength develops upon freezing of pore water within soil and at foundation surface. It has been reported that various factors like temperature, soil type, and pile surface roughness affect adfreeze bond strength. Especially, pile surface roughness has been considered as a primary factor to design pile foundation in frozen ground. It has usually been estimated with fixed correction factors for pile materials. However, even if the pile foundation material is the same, the surface roughness could vary depending on the production circumstances. In this study, laboratory test was carried out to quantitatively analyze the effects of surface roughness on the adfreeze bond strength, and fractal dimension was used as a measure for surface roughness. Test results showed that adfreeze bond strength increased with decreasing temperature, increasing vertical stress and surface roughness. The adfreeze bond strength varies sensitively with surface roughness in the early freezing section of $-2^{\circ}C$, but its sensitivity decreased in the temperature ranging between $-2^{\circ}C$ to $-5^{\circ}C$. The results conclude that the roughness highly affects the frictional resistance of pile surface in frozen ground; however, the roughness does not affect considerably when the temperature drops below about $-2^{\circ}C$.

  • A shear strength model for the high-shear ring anchor consisting of a steel ring and a rod was developed based on the shear tests on single high-shear ring anchors. The shear strength was found to be proportional to $f_{ck}{^{0.75}}$ which is a similar characteristic to the strength of shear connectors used in composite structures. The effects of the compressive strength of concrete, edge distance, and embedment length of rod are included in the proposed model. Comparison with 22 tests shows that the average and the coefficient of variation of test-to-prediction ratios are 1.01 and 7.57%, respectively. Push tests on the specimens having four high-shear ring anchors at each face were conducted and the measured shear strengths were compared with the predictions by the proposed model. For the specimen with an edge distance of 100 mm, a splitting failure occurred and for the specimens with an edge distance of 150 mm, a failure mode mixed with splitting and bearing occurred, which were very similar to the failures of shear tests on single high-shear ring anchors. In case of a splitting failure, the overlap of failure surfaces could be prevented by providing the longitudinal spacing of 400 mm which is four times of the edge distance. In case of a bearing failure, the failure area is less than 150 mm from the center of the anchor and therefore the overlap of failure surfaces could be prevented by providing the longitudinal spacing of 200 mm. The average of the test-to-prediction ratios of Push tests is 98%, which means that the proposed mode can be applied to predict the shear strength of the multiple high-shear rings.
