  • Because strong urban earthquakes must produce huge losses of both life and property, examinations about the effect of huge earthquakes for tall buildings are very required. The goal of this report is examining model safety and compare the behavior of 2-D tall models under huge seismic loads. This report examines high-rise models designed KBC2009 codes using 1) seismic loads regulated by KBC2009 and 2) amplified seismic loads assumed to strong earthquakes. And observing for more realistic behavior of tall buildings under huge earthquakes, this report takes two analysis methods - response spectrum analysis and non-linear time history analysis considering P-delta effect.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of the second-order analysis for asymmetric unbraced frame using the load amplification factor suggested by design codes. For this purpose, the first-order analysis with the B1 and B2 factors suggested by KBC 2005 and the direct analysis with the load amplification factors suggested by KBC 2009 were performed for five story - two bay and five story - four bay asymmetric unbraced steel frames. The results of the analyses were compared with the results of the second-order inelastic analysis to evaluate the validity of the suggested methods. The main parameters of the analysis were the shape of the frame, the axial load ratio of the column, the methods of analysis and the location of column. The research results show that the asymmetric shape of the frame deteriorates the validity of the factor B2 and the suggested methods. The range of error is increased in case of irregular or inclined column.

  • This study has two objectives: (1) to evaluate the degradation characteristics of symmetric unbraced steel frames by using analytical approach, and (2) to suggest equation which can approximately estimate the effect of degradation during the schematic design stage. For the analytical approach, the refined plastic hinge method with an arc length algorithm was adopted. The subject of analysis was one story one-bay, multistory one-bay, and multistory three-bay unbraced steel frames. The main parameters of the analytical approach include the stiffness ratio of column to beam and the axial force ratio. The study led to the following conclusions. The normalized stiffness of degradations is affected by both stiffness ratio of column to beam and the axial load ratio; however, the major influence on degradations is the axial force ratio. The equation, which can approximately estimate the effect of degradation, was suggested together with the research results.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the methods of application of the direct analysis method, using the load amplification factor suggested by the KBC 2009 design code, for the evaluation of frame stability. For this purpose, the direct analysis method was performed for three-story-one-bay and five-story-three-bay unbraced steel frames with various notional loads, bending stiffness reductions, and factor B2s. The results of the analyses were compared with the results of the second-order inelastic analysis to evaluate the influence of the applied methods. The scale of the frame, the axial load ratio, and the axial load distribution pattern were added to the main parameters to investigate the external effects. The research results showed that the influence of the methods of application of the direct analysis method is not significant in the case of the required axial strength and the application of the additional notional loads; and that the application of the factor B2 with the story stiffness concept to the direct analysis method is appropriate for the required flexural strength.

For this purpose, the first-order analysis with the B1 and B2 factors suggested by KBC 2005 and the direct analysis with the load amplification factor suggested by KBC 2009 (draft) were performed for three-story -one-bay and five-story-three-bay unbraced steel frames. The results of the analyses were compared with the results of the second-order inelastic analysis to evaluate the validity of the suggested methods. The main parameters of the analysis were the scale of the frame, the axial load ratio of the column, and the methods of analysis. The research results showedthat the method suggested by KBC 2005 does not properly consider the second-order effect under the high axial load ratio, but the direct analysis method suggested by KBC 2009 (draft) properly estimates the second-order effect without any serious problem.

  • In this paper, an experimental study have been many studies on the propriety of block shear design code. according to limited state design criteria of steel structures recently established in Korea, by an experiment on the joint of H-Beam Flange tension members. The objects of this study were to compare with the results of other studies on block shear rupture mode and ultimate capacity, and to evaluate the propriety of the design criteria. The result is that the joint happened, two types, tension yield-shear ruptures and shear yield-tension ruptures, and the experimental rupture load was 23% higher than the capacity entered in the criteria design code In this criteria, it was found that ultimate strength of block shear of H-Beam Flange was lowly estimated. Therefore, we emphasize the need of estimates on the block shear rupture by carrying out many studies in this field.

  • The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of the beam-columns and the columns was investigated in this paper. The energy method was deployed to study the inelastic buckling behavior of the beam-columns and columns. which requires the iterative solution of a fourth-order eigenproblem. Hitherto, the patterns of residual stress that satisfies the I-section manufacturing in Korea is not available, therefore the pattern of residual stress used in this study is a 'well-known' simplified pattern. The simplified pattern of the residual stresses is incorporated with the flow theory of plasticity to model the inelastic response. Firstly, this study investigates the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of the I-section beam-columns under a concentric axial compressive force and uniform bending, and the effect of residual stress on the inelastic buckling behavior of beam-columns is studied. The study is then extended to the inelastic buckling of the columns by eliminating a bending moment. These results are compared it with the design method in the Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study has found that design method in KSDM (1995) is excessively conservative.

  • A GA-based optimum design algorithm and a program for plane steel frame structures with semi-rigid connections are presented. The algorithm is incorporated with the refined plastic hinge analysis method wherein geometric nonlinearity is considered by using the stability functions of beam-column members, and material nonlinearity, by using the gradual stiffness degradation model that includes the effects of residual stresses, moment redistribution through the occurrence of plastic hinges, semi-rigid connections, and geometric imperfection of members. In the genetic algorithm, the tournament selection method and micro-GAs are employed. The fitness function for the genetic algorithm is expressed as an unconstrained function composed of objective and penalty functions. The objective and penalty functions are expressed as the weight of steel frames and the constraint functions, respectively. In particular, the constraint functions fulfill the requirements of load-carrying capacity, serviceability, ductility, and construction workability. To verify the appropriateness of the present method, the optimal design results of two plane steel frames with rigid and semi-rigid connections are compared.
