  • This study presents a design method for three-span continuous preflex composite girder bridges (3S-PCB) which imposes prestresses in the negative moment region by lifting or lowering interior supports and the design method is automated by a computer program which incorporates optimal design procedure. The objective function for the design of 3S-PCB minimizes the cost of construction materials and the constraint functions represent the limited dimensions of the design section and the allowable stress for each structural member as given in the specifications. Optimal design procedure used in this study is a modification of existing sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT), a numerical analyses procedure for two-span continuous preflex composite bridges. The optimized design sections determined for each span length are compared with those of simple preflex composite beams (SPCB) and the optimal girder depth is determined by defining the relationship between girder depth and construction material costs.

  • This study was conducted to improve the design and construction technique of orthotropic steel-deck bridges. After conducting an F.E.M. analysis of the various rib types of the connection details, static and fatigue tests were conducted, using a three-dimensional, full-scaled, orthotropic, steel-deck-plate model with internal diaphrams, to check the fatigue strength depending on the types of details. The model structure was made of two types of longitudinal ribs: the domestic standard and the European rabbit types. The fatigue strength of the steel-deck system was found to have improved through the installation of an internal diaphram, as no cracks were found on the bottom round part of the scallop with a diaphram. There were no differences between the domestic and the European types of details in terms of strength may be partially influenced by the shape of the scallop and by the installation of an internal diaphram, but it can be improved more significantly according to the quality of the welding that will be done.

  • Well designed group bolted connections can exhibit excellent ductile behavior through the bearing mechanism until the occurrence of shear rupture in the bolt or in the connecting plate. This excellent ductility can be utilized in favor of economical connection design. In this study, comprehensive tests on single-bolt bearing connections were conducted and analyzed considering bearing boundary conditions. The primary objective was to propose a generalized bearing strength and load-deformation relationship that can be used for designing group-bolted connections. To this end, new bearing strength formula, deformation limits as well as new load-deformation relationship were first proposed. Especially the proposed load-deformation relationship can reflect the stiffness, strength, and geometrical boundary conditions of the joint. The proposed formula and relationship are validated based on test results.

  • Drift design is one of the core techniques in the structural design of high-rise buildings and resizing technique is regarded as a practical drift design method for high-rise buildings. In the resizing technique, the structural weight is re-distributed to minimize the target displacement without a change in structural weights. However, the structural weight determined from resizing algorithm is bound to the structural weight based on the preliminary design. Therefore, in this paper, a drift design method that can control the weight of the structure without causing drift control performance to deteriorate is proposed by incorporating the weight control factor in the formulation of resizing algorithm. The proposed drift design method is applied to the drift design of two frame-shear wall systems. The proposed drift design method, in this study, makes it possible to control both the drift and weight of a high-rise building.

  • The optimal design method in cooperation with a nonlinear elastic analysis method was presented. The proposed nonlinear elastic method overcame the drawback of the conventional LRFD method this approximately accounts for the nonlinear effect caused by using the moment amplification factors of and. The genetic algorithm uses a procedure based on the Darwinian notions of the survival of the fittest, where selection, crossover, and mutation operators are used to look for high performance among the sections of the database. They satisfy constraint functions and give the lightest weight to the structure. The objective function was set to the total weight of the steel structure. The constraint functions were load-carrying capacities, serviceability, and ductility requirement. Case studies for a two-dimensional frame, a three-dimensional frame, and a three-dimensional steel arch bridge were likewise presented.

  • This paper proposed a general formulation of Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) models and LCC effective design system models of steel bridges suitable for practical implementation. An LCC model for the optimum design of steel bridges included initial cost and direct/indirect rehabilitation costs of a steel bridge as well as repair/replacement costs, loss of contents or fatality and injury losses, road user costs, and indirect socioeconomic losses. The new road user cost model and regional socioeconomic losses model were especially considered because of the traffic network. Illustrative design examples of an actual steel box girder and an orthotropic steel deck bridge were discussed to demonstrate the LCC effectiveness of the design of steel bridges. Based on the results of the numerical investigation, the LCC-effective optimum design of steel bridges based on the proposed LCC model was found to lead to a more rational, economical, and safer design compared with the initial cost-optimum design and the conventional code-based design.

  • As stated in Part(I), the use of the isolator is meant to protect a structure from seismic risk, by concentrating the inelastic deformations to relatively cheap and replaceable devices while the rest of the structures remains elastic. This research has been carried out to investigate the effects of various structural parameters and isolator characteristics on the seismic response of Base Isolated Bridges. Simplified analysis method for practical design is developed by using the results. The Proposed Code-Type approach method can be used to estimate the inertial forces accurately, not only at the isolator but throughout the height of the Base-Isolated Bridges. The proposed method is recommended to use in preliminary design tool or even a final design tool for Base Isolated Bridges. For the validation of simplified design method, examples with artificial earthquake time history and design response spectrum for P.C Box Bridge with bilinear hysteretic steel damper are evaluated.

  • The greenhouse discrete optimum design program was developed using discrete optimum algorithm based on the genetic algorithm. The basic search method for the optimum design is the genetic algorithm, which is known to be very efficient for discrete optimization. In this paper, the objective function was the weight of the greenhouse structures and the constraints were the limits state design method. The design variables were galvanized steel pipes for plastic housing KSD 3760. Objective criteria were presented for the design of economic greenhouse structure and evaluation of its stability. The standardizations of greenhouse structure were used, as well as the normalization of greenhouse-related materials. Design examples were given to show the applicability of the optimum design using the discrete optimum algorithm based on the genetic algorithm of this study.

  • ASCE 7-10 defines the torsional irregular structure as the one that has large torsional responses caused by the eccentricity. The code requires that these structures should be designed abide by the torsional provisions. This study evaluates the influence of torsional provisions on the performance of the designed multiple steel moment frames with different eccentricity. In this study, 3D response history analyses are performed. The results show that the moment frame design according to the standard with torsional irregularity provisions showed larger performance as the eccentricity increased and the distribution of plastic hinges similarly to orthopedic structures.

  • Most steel frame structures are constructed to one side without considering the arrangement of major-minor axis of column and bracing. This research presents more safety and economic efficiency can be obtained by just rearrangement of major-minor axis. Because most of steel-frame structures are excessively designed with Allowable Stress Design, and it needs to be changed to other specifications. The arrangement of major-minor axis of column is partly referred in AISC-LRFD, but still insufficient. This study compared with the each result from rearrangement of major-minor axis of column, arrangement of bracing, the connecting method of bracing, and consequence with different specifications. Moreover it demonstrated the direction of more economically optimized design.
