Between Aesthetics of Feeling and Absolute Music - Schopenhauer's Philosophy of Music - (쇼펜하우어의 음악철학 - 감정미학과 절대음악 사이 -)

  • This research aims to reconstruct the philosophical content and essence of Schopenhauer's metaphysics of music in his book, Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, particularly in paragraph 52, and to pay close attention to its theoretical account of music in the context of traditional musical aesthetics. The question whether Schopenhauer's theory of music is about aesthetics of feeling or about absolute music is dealt with at the end of this paper. It can be answered only within the whole system of his philosophy, because Schopenhauer's theory of music is the result of his philosophical reflections, and plays an important part in his metaphysics of the will. Schopenhauer's music theory, or rather his metaphysics of music, thus cannot be treated separately from Schopenhauer's metaphysics of the will, and is connected organically with it. As the metaphysics of the will lies in suspense between the traditional metaphysical philosophy and the non-metaphysical philosophy after Nietzsche, between the idealism and the philosophy of the body, the music aesthetics of Schopenhauer oscillates between the (romantic) aesthetics of feeling and the modern idea of absolute music.

  • 본 논문에서는 사람이 환경을 통해 경험하는 미학적 경험(aesthetic experience)을 체계화시킨 이론적 모델(a conceptual model of affect and cognition interface in aesthetic experiences of landscapes)이 간단히 소개 되며, 이 모델을 검증하기 위한 연구가 중점적으로 다루어진다. 제시된 모 델은 경관의 미학적 경험을 감정(affect)과 인지(cognition)와의 상호작용 (interface)으로 설명하고 있으며, 세 가지 요소(사람이 환경에 대하여 갖고 있는 목적 : tasks, 사람의 모든 과거경험에 근거한 지식일체 : schematic knowledge, 환경의 독특한 상황 : environmental situation)를 미학적 경험 의 주요인자로 제시한다. 이 모델을 검증하기 위한 연구에서는 앞에서 소 개된 미학적 경험의 세 가지 요소(사람의 목적, 지식, 환경상황)를 과학적 이고 계량적이고 처리할 수 있도록 세부요소로 분류정의 (operationalization)하였다. 구체적으로, 사람의 목적은 환경을 평가하는 세 가지 목적, 즉 경치평가(scenic beauty judgment), 들놀이 목적으로서의 평가(picnic preference judgment), 주거목적으로서의 평가(living preference judgment)로 분류되었고, 이 세 가지 환경평가는 미학적 경험의 지표로 사용되었다. 사람의 지식은 국적에 근거한 문화적인 지식(cultural schema : 한국인과 텍사스인)과 직업에 근거한 사회적인 지식(social schema : 농부, 비농부, 조경학과 학생)으로 분류되었으며, 환경상황은 환 경의 아름다움(beauty : 아름다운 경관과 아름답지않은 경관)과 환경의 의 미(meaning : 긍정적인 의미가 있는 한국경관, 긍정적인 의미가 없는 한국 경관, 긍정적인 의미가 있는 미국 텍사스경관)로 분류되었다. 연구결과를 보면, 이론적 모델에서 소개된 세 가지 요소들 (사람의 목적, 지식, 환경상 황) 모두가 경관의 미학적 경험에(경치평가, 들놀이 선호도, 주거지 선호 도) 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 밝혀졌으며, 이 연구결과는 제시된 이론적 모델을 뒷받침하고 있다. 특히, 가장 흥미로운 연구결과를 요약하면 첫째, 사람의 문화적인 지식은 단독으로 미학적 경험에 영향을 주는 것이 아니라 다른 요소들(특히 사회적인 지식과 목적)과의 상호작용을 통해 미학적 경 험을 형성한다는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 둘째, 환경의 아름다움은 다른 세부요소 들(환경의 의미, 사람의 목적과 지식)보다 미학적 경험에 주는 영향이 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 모든 사람들에게 비슷한 미학적 경험을 발생시키는 것 이 밝혀졌다. 다시 말하면 모든 사람들은 그들의 문화적인 국적과 사회적 인 직업의 차이, 목적의 차이, 또한 환경의 의미의 차이에 상관없이 아름다 운 경관(High-beauty landscape)을 주거지나 나들이 장소로서 선호했으며, 아름답다고 평가했다. 반면에, 사람들이 갖고 있는 문화의 차이, 직업의 차 이, 목적의 차이, 그리고 환경의 의미의 차이에 따라 경관의 미학적 평가가 달라진 것으로 나타났다.

Novel and Sentimental Education: Sympathy and Empathy (소설과 감정교육: 공감과 동감)

  • This essay attempts a historical examination of educational function of the novel. It pays attention to the eighteenth century sentimentalism, and its historical vicissitudes up to early twenties century. The eighteenth century is the period in which debates on the nature of emotion and its moral and aesthetic role have passionately taken place and the modern paradigm of thought on affect has been formed. This is why "affect revival phenomenon" in the late twenties century goes back to this period. This essay finds in Adam Smith the most sophisticated arguments on sympathy in their relation to the development of the novel; it examines the relationship of Smith's argument with modern novel in the tradition of sentimentalism, and its revision in modernist novel. Through this examination, it discusses how cognitive and non-cognitive approaches, the two representative positions in contemporary thinking on emotion/affect, have revised and transformed the eighteenth century sentimentalism.

  • South Korean films narrate exquisitely, express emotions implicitly and employ magnificent images, exemplifying unique oriental aesthetics. This paper takes Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) as an example to analyze the meaning of oriental aesthetics in South Korean films using the Film Narrative Theory. It is a fantasy blockbuster depicting family kinship stories. It structures with the familiar karma and reincarnation of Asian Buddhism with the core of family kinship. Perfectly interpreting the fantasy world of hell with stunning movie effects, it shows the family kinship of families under the main plot line of a horror film.

The Concept of Beauty and Aesthetic Characteristics in Daesoon Thought (대순사상의 미(美) 개념과 미학적 특징)

  • In this study, values of truth and good are expressed in the form of beauty, and truth and good are analyzed from an aesthetic point of view. This enables an assessment of how truth is expressed and presented as an "aesthetic" in Daesoon Thought. Therefore, an approach to faith in Daesoon Jinrihoe (大巡眞理會) can be presented via traditional aesthetics or theological aesthetics that reflect on sense experience, feelings, and beauty. The concept of beauty in Daesoon Thought which focuses on The Canonical Scripture appears in keywords used in Daesoon Thought such as divine nature (神性), the pattern of Dao (道理), the singularly-focused mind (一心), and relationships (關係). Therein, one can find sublimation, symmetry, moderation, and harmony. The aesthetic features of Daesoon Thought, when considered as an aesthetic system can formulate thinking regarding the aesthetics of 'Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth' (天地公事), the aesthetics of Mutual Beneficence (相生), and the aesthetics of healing. The Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth contain a record of the Supreme God visiting the world as a human being. The realization that the human figure, Kang Jeungsan (1871-1909), is the Supreme God, Sangje (上帝), is the shocking aesthetic motif and theological starting point of the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth. Mutual Beneficence can be seen aesthetically as indicating the sociality of mutual relations, and there is an aesthetic structure of Mutual Beneficence in the harmony and unification of those relations. Healing can be said to contain the sacred sublimation of Sangje, and moderation is a form of beauty that makes humans move toward Quieting the mind and Quieting the body (安心·安身), the Dharma of Presiding over Cures (醫統), and the ultimate value of healing, which is the end point of the Cultivation (修道) wherein one realizes that the ideals of humankind and the aesthetics of healing bestow the spiritual pleasures of a beautiful and valuable life. The aesthetic characteristics of Daesoon Thought demonstrate an aesthetic attitude that leads to healing through Sangje's Holy Works and the practice of Mutual Beneficence (相生) which were performed when He stayed with us to vastly save all beings throughout the Three Realms that teetered on the brink of extinction. It is not uncommon to see a beautiful woman and remark she is like a goddess (女神) or female immortal (仙女). Likewise, beautiful music is often praised as "the sound of heaven." That which fills us with joy is spoken of as "divine beings (神明)" of God. God is a symbol of beauty, and the world of God can be said to be the archetype of beauty. Experience of beauty guides our souls to God. The aesthetic experience of Daesoon Thought is a religious experience that culminates in emotional, intellectual, and spiritual joy, and it is an aesthetic experience that recognizes transcendent beauty.

  • Nowadays Industrial Design appears to us as provided products in the market through only User Interface and Technical Improvement. Consumer purchasing products intend to grant the meaning for the product by mobilizing his specific feeling and experience the moment he contact products the first time. As metaphorical character shown in the product is named to the Product Language, Industrial designer shall constantly proceed the study on the exact understanding or processing method. As Objects or products using by us imply aesthetical value, it appears to be different according to the diverse condition of products be different according to the diverse condition of products to be used. In case objectivity is unsatisfactory, aesthetic character shown in the product requires new instrumental system. Product analysis applied aesthetical measure of BIRKHOFF can be applied as tool for inherent metaphorical character of product and product development. With this, Design operation shall be much easier. So Application of aesthetical measure is not only a system but a tool giving help to carry out more smooth design process.

  • 본 연구는 인공지능(AI)과 인간이 만든 예술작품 사이의 나타나는 기술적 요소에서 나타나는 차이점 탐구를 통해, 인공지능 예술의 특성, 가능성, 한계를 파악하고, 예술가의 역할에 대한 심층적 이해를 도모하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 결과는 AI 생성 예술이 인간 예술과 경쟁할 수 있으며, 일반 대중 사이에서 높은 미학적 가치를 인정받을 수 있음을 나타냈다. 또한 AI 가 예술창작에서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있음을 나타냈다. 본 연구는 예술계 내에서 AI 예술의 위치와 사회적 수용에 대한 더 깊은 이해를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the structure of healing coded through transcriptional activity in the poem of Cho Ji-Hoon in the aspect of literary therapy. In particular, the search for how the codes of emotion are activated through neurophysiologic synapse. The variation of emotional codes developed in Cho Ji-Hoon's poem is in line with the encoding of literary therapy. Emotions emanating from poetic statements stimulate the transition of new emotions and activate emotions of healing. Cho Ji-Hoon's poem fuses emotions through the floods of various poetic transitions. It is then forming an overall healing forest. The healing content is discussed by the structure of transition, and all the structures are linked to the contents of healing. It is a greater part of sad lyricism by the action of descent and ascension, and green aesthetics of the leaves. In the future, if Cho Ji-Hoon's research on poetry is activated, we will be able to meet genuine stories about his natural and literary healing life.

Melodrama, the Paradox of Modern Imagination Coordinating Moral Norms and Emotions -Based on the Developmental Approach (멜로드라마, 도덕규범과 감정을 조율하는 근대적 상상력의 역설 -발생론적 접근을 중심으로)

  • Since the birth of melodrama in the early Enlightenment era, it has flowed through various cultures and media. In order to grasp the principle of differentiation of melodrama and the direction of its change, a developmental approach to the formation process of melodrama is necessary. In this regard, this paper examines the formation process of modern melodrama and its aesthetic features around the time of the French Revolution. The modern melodrama was formed in the period between the end of the 18th century and the start of the 19th century. It was born at the intersectional point of the contradictions of the modern imagination and the political paradox of the French Revolution, which demanded an autonomous citizenship but did not recognize a woman as a citizen. The aesthetic of women's sacrifice and tears reproduced in the modern melodrama is a political aspiration to restore a corrupt society by glamorizing a woman as a moral icon. This was an icon to save a society under divide and crisis and a coordination of emotions to conceal sexist violence in the politics of the exclusion of women. The aesthetic of women's sacrifice and tears reproduced in modern melodrama has consistently been considered under negative evaluation such as a play of moral hypocrisy and vulgar drama. However, the academic interest in melodrama in the 1970s has been amplified due to the "Sirk-melo" which is a transition to the new aesthetic of women's sacrifice and tears, encompassing not only women, but also races and classes. In modern society, entering the era of uncertainty, where various social problems, national disasters, and global disasters have become commonplace, 'the aesthetic of women's sacrifice and tears' are shifting from gender differences to various victim narratives. Reviewing new theoretical trends and changes of recent melodrama as well as analyzing specific works are left as follow-up tasks.Since the birth of the melodrama in the early Enlightenment era, it has flowed through various cultures and media.   • This paper mainly studies two films created by Huo Jianqi, Nuan and Postman in the Mountains, and analyzes the aesthetic style of Huo Jianqi's local movies in three parts. The first part deals with the characteristics of Huo Jianqi's local movies and discusses the theme selection, theme performance, character creation and emotional expression of the film. The second part elaborates Huo Jianqi's film and television works from three aspects: picture language, voice language and color language, which further reflects Huo Jianqi's aesthetic style. The third part analyses the puzzlement in the development of local films and how to develop them. With its unique oriental aesthetics, unique perspectives, unique rural scenery and characteristics, Chinese local movies have become the most representative of the overall level and style of Chinese movies. Chinese local film is the reflection and care of Chinese local culture, showing strong regional local culture, regionality is its distinct feature. Since the reform and opening up, with the changes of the times and the renewal of film directors, local films have shown distinct characteristics of the times. Through the analysis of Huo Jianqi's aesthetic style of local movies, this paper hopes to provide some valuable reference and inspiration for the development of Chinese local movies.
