AVO and complex trace analyses mainly used to characterize natural gas reservoir were tested in this paper for a possible application to detection of major geological discontinuities such as fracture zones. The test data used in this study were calculated by utilizing a viscoelastic numerical program which was based on the generalized Maxwell body for a horizontal fracture model. In AVO analysis of a horizontal fracture zone, p-wave reflection appears to be variant depending upon the acoustic-impedence contrast and the offset distance. The fracture zone is also effectively clarified both in gradient stack and range-limited stack in which fracture zone reflection is attenuated with the increasing offset distance. In complex attribute plots (instantaneous amplitude, frequency, and phase), the top and bottom of the fracture Tone are characterized by a zone of strong amplitudes and an event of the same phase. Low frequency characteristics appear at the fracture zone and the underneath. Amplitude attenuation and waveform dispersion are dependent on Q-contrast between the fracture zone and the surrounding media. They were properly compensated by optimum inverse Q-filtering.
The advent of towed geo-electrical array surveying on water and land has resulted in datasets of magnitude approaching that of airborne electromagnetic surveying and most suited to 1D inversion. Robustness and complete automation is essential if processing and reliable interpretation of such data is to be viable. Sharp boundaries such as river beds and the top of saline aquifers must be resolved so use of smoothness constraints must be minimised. Suitable inversion algorithms must intelligently handle low signal-to-noise ratio data if conductive basement, that attenuates signal, is not to be misrepresented. A noise-level aware inversion algorithm that operates with one elastic thickness layer per electrode configuration has been coded. The noise-level aware inversion identifies if conductive basement has attenuated signal levels so that they are below noise level, and models conductive basement where appropriate. Layers in the initial models are distributed to span the effective depths of each of the geo-electric array quadrupoles. The algorithm works optimally on data collected using geo-electric arrays with an approximately exponential distribution of quadrupole effective depths. Inversion of data from arrays with linear electrodes, used to reduce contact resistance, and capacitive-line antennae is plausible. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm using theoretical examples and an example from a salt interception scheme on the Murray River, Australia.
For the effective management of groundwater resources, it is necessary to predict groundwater level fluctuations in response to rainfall events. In the present study, time series models using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and support vector machines (SVMs) have been developed and applied to groundwater level data from the Gasan, Shingwang, and Cheongseong stations of the National Groundwater Monitoring Network. We designed four types of model according to input structure and compared their performances. The results show that the rainfall input model is not effective, especially for the prediction of groundwater recession behavior; however, the rainfall-groundwater input model is effective for the entire prediction stage, yielding a high model accuracy. Recursive prediction models were also effective, yielding correlation coefficients of 0.75-0.95 with observed values. The prediction errors were highest for Shingwang station, where the cross-correlation coefficient is lowest among the stations. Overall, the model performance of SVM models was slightly higher than that of ANN models for all cases. Assessment of the model parameter uncertainty of the recursive prediction models, using the ratio of errors in the validation stage to that in the calibration stage, showed that the range of the ratio is much narrower for the SVM models than for the ANN models, which implies that the SVM models are more stable and effective for the present case studies.

Purpose: In this study, we developed a new method for the determination of renal depth with anterior and posterior renal scintigrams in a dual-head gamma camera, considering the attenuation factor $e^{-{\mu}x}$ of the conjugate-view method. Material and Method: We developed abdomen and kidney phantoms to perform experiments using Technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid ($^{99m}Tc$-DMSA). The phantom images were obtained by dual-head gamma camera equipped with low-energy, high-resolution, parallel-hole collimators (ICONf, Siemens). The equation was derived from the linear integration of omission ${\gamma}$-ray considering attenuation from the posterior abdomen to the anterior abdomen phantom surface. The program for measurement was developed by Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. Results : Renal depths of the phantoms were derived from the derived equations and compared with the exact geometrical values. Differences between the measured and the calculated values were the range of 0.1 to 0.7 cm ($0.029{\pm}0.15cm,\;mean{\pm}S.D.$). Conclusion: The present study showed that the use of the derived equations for renal depth measurements, combined with quantitative planar imaging using dual-head gamma camera, could provide more accurate results for individual variation than the conventional method.
The excessive wind-induced motion of tall buildings most frequently result from vortex-shedding-induced across-wind oscillations. This form of excitation is most pronounced for relatively flexible, lightweight, and lightly damped high-rise buildings with constant cross-sections. This paper discusses the aerodynamic means ofmitigating the across-wind vortex shedding induced in such situations. Openings are added in both the drag and lift directions in the buildings to provide pressure equalization. Theytend to reduce the effectiveness of across-wind forces by reducing their magnitudes and disrupting their spatial correlation. The effects of buildings with several geometries of openings on aerodynamic excitations and displacement responses have been studied for high-rise buildings with square cross-sections and an aspect ratio of 8:1 in a wind tunnel. High-frequency force balance testshave been carried out at the Kumoh National University of Technology using rigid models with 24 kinds of opening shapes. The measured model's aerodynamic excitations and displacement were compared withthose of a square cylinder with no openings to estimate the effectiveness of openings for wind-induced oscillations. From these results, theopening shape, size, and location of buildings to reduce wind-induced vortex shedding and responses were pointed out.

This paper used dynamic centrifuge tests to examine the seismic response for a deep temporary retaining wall with four input motions of 100, 1,000, and 2,400 years of return periods. The centrifuge model was designed based on an actual deep excavation design with a 50 m maximum excavation depth. The model backfill was prepared with dry silica sand at a relative density of 55%, and the retaining wall was modeled as a 24.8 m height diaphragm wall supported by struts. Acceleration response was amplified at the backfill surface, top of the wall, and near bedrock. However, in the middle of the model, input motion was de-amplified. The member forces of the wall and strut induced by the seismic load, which excited, were compared with the member force at rest condition. The wall's maximum negative and positive moments were increased to 36% and 10% compared to the maximum moment at rest. The maximum axial force increases to 70% of the at rest axial force on the bottom strut. The equivalent static analysis using Mononobe-Okabe (M-O) and Seed-Whitman (S-W) seismic earth pressures were compared to the centrifuge results. Considering the bending moment, the analysis results with the M-O theory underestimates but that with the S-W theory overestimates.
Finite difference method using not general SSG (standard staggered grid) but RSG (rotated staggered grid) was applied to simulation of elastic wave propagation. Special free surface boundary condition such as imaging method is needed in finite difference method using SSG in elastic wave propagation. But free surface boundary condition in finite difference method using RSG is easily solved with adding air layer or vacuum layer. Recently PML (Perfectly Matched layer) is widely used to eliminate artificial reflection waves from finite boundary because of its' greate efficiency. Absorbing ability of CPML (convolutional Perfectly Matched Layer) that is more efficient than that of PML and CPML that don't use splitting of wave equation that should be adapted to PML was applied to FDM using RSG in this study. Frequency absorbing characteristic and energy absorbing ability in CPML layer were investigated and CPML eliminated artificial boundary waves very effectively in FDM using RSG in being compared with that of Cerjan's absorbing method. CPML method also diminished amplitude of waves in boundary layer of solid-liquid model very well.
ELM, a characteristic line based method, was applied to advection-dispersion equation, and the results obtained were compared with those of Eulerian schemes(Stone-Brian and QUICKEST). The calculation methods consisted of Lagrangian interpolation scheme and cubic spline interpolation scheme for the advection calculation, and the Crank-Nicholson scheme for the dispersion calculation. The results of numerical methods were as follows: (1) for Gaussian hill: ELM, using Lagrangian interpolation scheme, gave the most accurate computational result, ELM, using cubic spline interpolation scheme, and QUICKEST scheme gave numerical damping for Peclet number 50. Stone-Brian scheme gave phase shift introduced in the numerical solution for Peclet number 10 and 50. (2) for advanced front: All schemes gave accurate computational results for Peclet number 1 and 4. ELM, Lagrangian interpolation scheme, and Stone,Brian scheme gave dissipation error and ELM, using cubic spline interpolation scheme, and QUICKEST scheme gave numerical oscillation for Peclet number 50.
In this paper the first- and second order statistics of soil moisture are derived using the Washita '92 data. Also the possible correlations among the soil texture, the brightness temperature, the NDVI and the soil moisture are investigated based in the linear regression study. Only the correlation between the soil moisture and the brightness temperature shows significant values. The soil moisture decay coefficients in time were estimated for each soil type and cross-checked by calculating the last rainfall time before the observation to be about 20days in all different soil types. The second-order statistics of soil moisture based on the correlogram and the spectrum was analyzed to derive the data characteristics and compared with those of the NDVI and the soil texture. This analysis shows that the soil moisture within the highly correlated soil texture field is affected much by the relatively less correlated vegetation field in the Washita area, where the effect of topography is known to be small. The soil moisture media was derived and its parameters were estimated successfully using the first - and sedcond -order statistics.

This paper introduces an experimental verification and a field application of the proposed technique using the combination of FEM and HGA about the loss prestressing force of an exteranl tendon by above same authors. The vibration tests have been conducted by using a laboratory models and the externally prestressed tendon at the field and the natural frequencies are extracted from the vibration tests. The proposed technique based on the extracted natural frequencies is applied. It is seen that the errors in the tension and lost prestressing force by proposed technique are about 4% from a laboratory model test. For the model verification at field, exact modeling has beem made with Rayleigh damping. It is seen that the error in the tension by proposed technique is less than 1% and the estimated lost prestressing force converges less than the exact value.
