Sewage Treatment Using a Double Media Reed Constructed Wetland (복층여재 갈대 인공습지에 의한 생활하수 처리)

  • A sewage was treated using a serially combined vertical(VFCW) and horizontal flow double media (sand and zeolite for VFCW and sand and waste oyster-shell for HFCW) reed constructed wetland(HFCW) with intermittent feeding (see Fig. 1). The sewage was fed into the reed constructed wetland for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^2{\cdot}day$. The summarized results were as follows: pH values in the effluent depended very heavily on oyster-shell height filled in the HFCW. They were maintained at less than pH 6.24 when the height of the oyster-shell layer was 200 mm. Influent DO(oxygen demand) values(average 0.19 mg/L) were increased in the VFCW(average 7.65 mg/L) and decreased again in the HFCW(average 6.49 mg/L). They were higher in the winter than in the summer. The OTR(oxygen transfer rate) was $57.15g\;O_2/m^2{\cdot}day$ in the VFCW and $5.65g\;O_2/m^2{\cdot}day$ in the HFCW. The removal efficiency of $NH_4{^+}$-N was 80.17%(6.01 $NH_4{^+}$-N mg/L in the effluent). It was lower than that in the case where only zeolite was filled in the reed constructed wetland. But it was expected that treated sewage effluent using a double media reed constructed wetland with 300 mm zeolite layer could stably meet the Korean treated sewage effluent standard(20 mg T-N/L). Average removal efficiencies were SS 88.09%, BOD 88.12%, $COD_{Cr}$ 83.11%, $COD_{Mn}$ 85.58%, T-N 57.21%, $NH_4{^+}$-N 80.17%, T-P 86.73%. Nearly, The concentration of $NO_3{^-}$-N in the effluent of the VFCW was decreased in that of the HFCW. More than half of T-N in the effluent was $NO_3{^-}$-N(7.92 mg/L) but the concentration of $NO_2{^-}$-N in the effluent was average 0.90 mg/L. The removal efficiencies of T-P were 93.24%, 86.30% and 55.44% at the height of the oyster-shell-filled constructed wetland of 800 mm, 500 mm and 200 mm, respectively and therefore, they were proportional to oyster-shell height filled in the HFCW.

  • To improve T-N and T-P removal efficiencies, removal efficiencies of pollutants in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant by natural purification method with water plant filtration and activated sludge beds were investigated under different re-injection rates and injection methods of livestock wastewater. The removal rates of COD, SS, T-N, and T-P in effluent in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant were in the order of 30% < 70% ${\leq}$ 100 % at different re-injection rates. The removal rates of pollutants in effluent in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant were higher as re-injection rate of livestock wastewater increased. Removal rates of COD, SS, T-N, and T-P by continuous injection were slightly higher than those by intermittent injection method in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant. Removal rates of COD, SS, T-N, and T-P by continuous injection method in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant with water plant filtration and activated sludge beds were 99.5, 99.8, 99.0 and 99.8%, respectively.

A Study on Hybrid DeNOx Process Using Selective Catalytic Reduction and Adsorption (선택적촉매환원과 흡착을 이용한 복합 탈질공정 연구)

  • This study was carried out to develop an efficient process abating high NO concentration. A hybrid process of selective catalytic reduction(SCR) and activated carbon fiber(ACF) adsorption was newly designed and tested. Used ACF in NO adsorption was regenerated by simultaneously applying heat and vacuum. The result of ACF regeneration was for superior in the desorption condition at $140^{\circ}C$ and vacuum 600 mmHg. A commercial catalyst was used at the conditions of reaction temperature at $300^{\circ}C$, $NH_3/NO$ mole ratio = 1.0 for SCR process. NO evolved from ACF regeneration reactor could be removed by SCR reactor up to 98%. But high concentration of NO was exhausted from SCR reactor for one minute when the flue gas of NO 300 ppm and deserted NO from ACF regeneration were simultaneously treated by the same SCR reactor. Therefore, it is necessary to use additional small sized SCR reactor or to increase $NH_3$ concentration for a short time along with NO concentration rather than to mix flue gas with the gas evolving from ACF regeneration at fixed $NH_3$ inlet concentration. The hybrid process of SCR and ACF showed high NO removal efficiency over 80% at any time courses. Through the repeated cycles, stable DeNOx efficiency was maintained, indicating that the hybrid process would be a good countermeasure to the spotaneously high NO concentration instead of increasing the SCR capacity.

  • Retrograde myocardial protection is widely accepted in CABG operation because of the limitations of the antegrade method in the coronary arterial stenosis lesions. We analyzed 76 c ses of retrograde myocardial protection among 96 cases of CABG operation performed between April 1994 and August 1995, There were 48 males and 25 females, and the mean age was 58.2 $\pm$ 8.3 years. 53 patients (70%) were operated for unstable angina, 14 (18%) for stable angina, 6 (8%) for post-infarct angina, 1 (1%) for acute myocardial infarction, and 2()%) for failed PTCA. Preoperative coronary angiography revealed 3-vessel disease in 42 cases, 2-vessel disease in 11, 1-vessel disease in 10, and left main disease in 13 cases. We used SVG(63 cases), LIMA(69 cases), RIMA(11 cases), radial artery(6 cases), and gastroepiploic artery(1 case) for the grafts. Mean anastomosis was 3.2 $\pm$ 1.1. We protected the myocardium with antegrade induction and retrograde maintenance in all the cases except a case of retrograde induction and maintenance. During the aortic cross-clamping, blood cardioplegia was administered intermittently in 19 cases, and continuously in 57 In 39 cases, we used retrograde ardioplegia and antegrade perfusion of RCA graft simultaneously. We had no operative motality. Perioperative complications were arrhythmia in 15 cases, perioperatve myocardial infarction in 10, low cardiac output syndrome In 8, transient neurologic problem in 7, transient psychiatric problem in 6, ARF in 3, bleeding in 2, pneumonia in 2, wound infection in 1, and duodenal ulcer perforation in 1 . In this report, we experienced 76 cases of CABG operation with retrograde myocardial protection under the acceptable operative risk without operative mortality.

Continuous Hydrogen Gas production by Immobilized Anaerobic Microorganisms (고정화 혐기성 미생물에 의한 연속적인 수소 생산)

  • Hydrogen producing acidogenic microorganisms were self-immobilized using organic-inorganic hybrid polymer within 5 minutes. During the continuous tratment of synthetic wastewater at a hydraulic retention time of 20 hours, at 37$^{\circ}C$, pH 5.0, the self-immobillized granules were maintained in a stirred tank reactor. The black colored granules gradually became milky. Image analysis showed that the mean diameter of the milky colored granules ranged from 1.5 to 20. mm. The maximum bio-gas procuction rate was 380 ml/L/hy and the concentration of H$_2$was around 50%, while no methane was detected. Granular ECP was extracted and its content was measured to elucidate the role of the organic-inorganic hybrid polymer. Further increases of granule concentration are expected to increase the hydrogen production rate.

Characteristics of Temperature, Humidity and PPF Distribution by Covering Method and Environmental Control in Double Covering Greenhouse (이중피복 온실의 피복방법과 환경조절에 따른 온습도 및 광합성유효광량자속 분포 특성)

  • The objective of the present study is to provide data needed to find double covering method to be able to improve environment of temperature, humidity and PPF in tomato greenhouse. The distribution charts of temperature, humidity and PPF which were measured in environment control conditions such as thermal insulation, air heating, roof ventilation and air fog cooling in conventional and air inflated double layers greenhouses were drawn and analysed. The thermal insulation effect of the air inflated greenhouse was the same as that of conventional greenhouse because the temperature between insulation curtain and roof covering material was equal in heating season. The ventilation effect of the air inflated greenhouse was superior to the conventional greenhouse. The temperature distribution in the fog cooled greenhouse was uniform and the cooling effect was about $3.5^{\circ}C$. The condensation on the roof covering surface could be controlled by removing the moisture between insulation curtain and roof covering by using humidifier. The PPF of conventional greenhouse was more decreased than the air inflated greenhouse as time went by because the transmittance of conventional greenhouse declined by dust collected on the inside plastic film owing to rolling up and down operation for ventilation.

Effects of Hydraulic Retention Time and Cycle Time on the Sewage Treatment of Intermittently Aerated Nonwoven Fabric Filter Bioreactor (간헐포기식 부직포 여과막 생물반응조에서 체류시간 및 주기시간이 하수처리에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the removal efficiency of an intermittently aerated nonwoven fabric filter bioreactor fed continuously with domestic sewage. The hydraulic retention time(HRT) of the reactor was reduced from 12 hrs to 10 hrs to 8 hrs during an experimental period of 17 months. In order to search an optimum aeration/nonaeration time ratio for the nitrogen removal at each HRT, the cycle times of 3, 2 and 1 hr were tested at the aeration/nonaeration time ratio of 1. Then, the aeration/nonaeration time ratio was changed from 50 min/70 min to 40 min/80 min to 30 min/90 min at the cycle time of 2 hr which showed the best nitrogen removal. During the experimental period, the effluent SS concentration was always below 1.2 mg/L with more than 95% of BOD removal efficiency. The highest nitrogen removal of 90.1% was observed at the aeration/nonaeration time ratio of 40 min/80 min at the HRT of 10 hr. Oxidation-reduction potential could represent the degree of the nitrification and denitrification reaction in the reactor.

Pretreatment of Livestock Wastewater containing PO4-3-P with Waste Oyster Shells (폐굴껍질을 이용한 축산폐수중 무기인의 1차 처리)

  • In this study, various batch tests were performed to examine the utilization of waste oyster shells for removal of $PO_4^{3-}-P$ in livestock wastewater, because waste oyster shells have been known to be very porous and to have alkaline minerals such as calcium and mangnesium. $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removal rate were increased by waste oyster shells, as specific surface area and contact efficiency per unit area of their were increased. Generally, it could be showed that $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removal rate were very influenced by particle size, dosage and temperature. At low pH of initial reactions, it would be showed that $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removals were directly influenced by adsorption but crystallization process were dominated with passed time and pH increasing. The SEM observed that the variations were hardly seen, but particle sizes of waste oyster shell were relatively big after reactions and showed forms of smaller plate than before reactions.

  • 인공적으로 디젤류에 오염시킨 5kg의 토양이 충전된 두 개의 실험 column을 이용해서 외부 온도변화 효과를 최소화하기 위해서 $25^{\circ}C{\pm}2.5$로 유지시켰으며, 유량속도도 10ml/min로 일정하게 유지시켰다. 또한 수분은 활동범위 능력의 $60{\sim}80%$에서 유지시켰다. 따라서 연속식과 간헐 주입식 모드를 운전비용의 감소 및 효율의 향상 측면에서 모드의 평가를 위한 방법으로 이용기간 동안 총세균 수, 유류분해균 수의 변화, 탈수소효소 활성도의 변화 추이 분석을 하였다. 두 venting 모드별로 본 총 종속영양균 수와 유류분해균 수는 모두 대등한 성장률을 보였으며, 반응일 수에 따라 비교된 탈수소효소 활성도 반응 90일 동안 비슷한 활성을 유지 했다.

Vertical Flow Zeolite-Filled Reed Bed with Intermittent Feeding for Sewage Treatment (수직 흐름 제올라이트 갈대 여과상에 의한 생활하수 처리)

  • A sewage was treated using a vertical flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The sewage from the student dormitory of Changwon National University was fed into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^3{\cdot}$day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 em and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolite: 0.5$\sim$1 mm and 1$\sim$3 mm in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was 88 89.9%, $COD_{Cr}$ 86.1 %, $COD_{Mn}$ 81.2%, T-N 34.0%, $NH_4^+$-N 97.3% and T-P 34.6%. T-N of effluent was mostly $NO_3^-$-N and the concentration of $NO_2^-$-N in effluent was lower than 0.1 mg/L. All removal efficiencies did not show a remarkable seasonal change. The ranking of phosphorous fractions fixed to the zeolite in column test was Ca-P > Fe-P > reductant soluble Fe-P > occluded P > saloid P > AI-P at all depths of the filter. All phosphorous fractions except for AI-P reduced at deeper filter layer, while their content ratios increased at deeper filter layer. Organic matter content was the highest at the highest layer (0$\sim$5 cm from the top of the filter) and only small differences were observed at the deeper filter layer than 5 em from the top. Organic matter content increased at all depths of the filter with the operating time.
