A sewage was treated using a horizontal flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The sewage from the student dormitory of Changwon National University was fed into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^2$ day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 cm and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolite : $0.5{\sim}1mm$ and $1{\sim}3mm$ in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was SS $88.5%,\;COD_{cr},\;86.1%,\;COD_{Mn}\;81.0%,\;T-N\;48.6%,\;NH_4^+-N\;97.1%$ and T-P 42.8%. T-N of effluent was mostly $NO_3^--N$ and the concentration of $NO_2^--N$ in effluent was lower than 0.1 mg/L. All removal efficiencies did not show a remarkable seasonal change.
The production of extracellular polysaccharide by Methylomonas mucosa (NRRL B-5696) was investigated. The microorganism uses methanol as the carbon source for their growth and produces exopolysaccharides. The productivity of exopolysaccharides was investigated under various culture modes: batch, fed-batch and continuous culture. In flask culture the growth of cell mass and the production of polysaccharide were inhibited at above 1% (v/v) methanol. At 1%(v/v) methanol maximum specific growth rate was obtained. As C/N ratio (g methanol/g ammonium sulfate) increased, polysaccharide production increased and cells mass decreased. Magnesium ion was also found to be essential for the polysaccharide production. In batch culture the production of polysaccharides was more affected by the specific growth rate than the cell concentration. In fed-batch culture the concentration of polysaccharide was 4 times higher than that of batch culture, but the yield was lower. The productivity of fed-batch with continuous feeding was higher than that of batch or fed-batch with intermittent feeding. This is due to no methanol limitation or inhibition that used to occur in fed-batch culture with intermittent feeding. In continuous culture pure oxygen was supplied to avoid the oxygen limitation. As the dilution rate in- creased up to 0.21 h-1, the yield and productivity increased. The solution viscosity of the produced polysaccharide obtained from above increased exponentially with the concentration of polysaccharide.
Most of the studies conducted have investigated the beneficial effects of ischemic preconditioning on normothermic myocardial ischemia. However, the effect of preconditioning could be attenuated through the use of multidose cold cardioplegia as practiced in contemporary clinical heart surgical procedures. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether preconditioning improves postischemic cardiac function in a model of 25℃ moderate hypothermic ischemic heart induced by cold cardioplegia in isolated rat hearts. Material and Method: The isolated Sprague-Dawley rat hearts were randomly assigned to four groups. All hearts were perfused at 37℃ for 20 minutes with Krebs-Henseleit solution before the baseline hemodynamic data were obtained. Group 1 consisted of preconditioned hearts that received 3 minutes of global ischemic preconditioning at 37℃, followed by 5 minutes of reperfusion before 120 minutes of cardioplegic arrest (n=6). Cold (4℃) St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegia solution was infused to induce cardioplegic arrest. Maintaining the heart at 25℃, infusion of the cardioplegia solution was repeated every 20 minutes throughout the 120 minutes of ischemic period. Group 2 consisted of control hearts that underwent no manipulations between the periods of equilibrium and 120 minutes of cardioplegic arrest (n=6). After 2 hours of cardioplegic arrest, Krebs solution was infused and hemodynamic data were obtained for 30 minutes (group 1, 2: cold cardioplegia group). Group 3 received two episodes of ischemic preconditioning before 30 min of 37℃ normothermic ischemia and 30 minutes of reperfusion (n=6). Group 4 served as ischemic controls for group 3 (group 3, 4: warm ischemia group). Result: Preconditioning did not influence parameters such as left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP), rate-pressure product (RPP) and left ventricular dp/dt (LV dp/dt) in the cold cardioplegia group. (p=NS) However, preconditioning before warm ischemia attenuated the ischemia induced cardiac dysfunction, improving the LVSP, LVEDP, RPP, and LVdp/dt. Less leakage of CPK and LDH were observed in the ischemic preconditioning group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Ischemic preconditioning improved postischemic cardiac function after warm ischemia, but did not protect cold cardioplegic hearts.

Chemicals are injected in order to remove a variety of organic substances contained in the water purification plant influent. It can be determined with measuring sedimentation turbidity 4~7 hours later, whether the chemical dosage rate is proper or not, which make the real-time feedback control impossible. In addition, manual operation in accordance with the Jar-Test carried out in the laboratory and the operator's experience may cause the experimental and human error by the changes of organic characteristics and water quality. Especially at night ad weekend, the rate have been determined only by the operator judgment owing to environment engineer's absence. Therefore, the decision of optimal chemical dosage rate using proposed intelligent control algorithm is expected to result in real-time injection and cost reduction.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an intermittent aeration mode to reduce the membrane fouling in a submerged membrane process using the specifically devised module (YEF 750D-2). The fluid velocity on the module increased with increasing the supplied air volume, and decreased with the increment of MLSS in the biological reactor. The reduction rate of the fluid velocity was found to be $3\times10^{-4}m{\cdot}min/sec{\cdot}L$ per 1,000 mg MLSS/L increased. In the operation of the intermittent aeration, the intermitted stop of the aeration provoked the formation of a cake layer on the gel layer which was previously formed during the aeration, resulting in the highly increased TMP level. However, the TMP level could be significantly lowered by the subsequent backwashing and aeration that effectively removed the cake along with the gel layer on the membrane surface. In this study, the optimum condition for the intermittent aeration was determined to be aeration for 20 sec and pause for 20 sec.
Surfactant flushing for enhancing the removal of BTEX from contaminated sand/clay mixtures was investigated. Eight soil columns packed with relatively undisturbed BTEX contaminated soils, were leached with water, methyl alcohol and then flushed with surfactant with or without several additives. Initial concentrations of BTEX mixture range from 278mg/kg to 1975mg/kg. Initial BTEX removal efficiency was 98% when the contaminated soil was flushed with water of 850 pore volumes. Because of tailing effect, water flushing could not remove below 8mg/kg concentrations during the experimental period. Eventually, the most effective surfactant for flushing was turned out to be 4% SOFTANOL(equation omitted)-90 with 3% ethyl alcohol and 3% SXS. In interrupted flow conditions, the removal efficiency was 99.5% with the flushed water of 95 pore volumes. The BTEX mixture removed from the soil columns during the surfactant flushing ranges from 84.5% to 99.5% of the initial amount for both water leaching(850 pore volumes) and surfactant flushing(95-165 pore volumes), respectively. Test results indicated that surfactant flushing could enhance the removal of BTEX mixture from contaminated soils and could reduce the aqueous phase BTEX mixture concentration in leachate.

The study with laboratory sandbox model has been carried out to address potential use of reclaimed water, as a way for artificially recharging the coastal aquifer, to effectively prevent from seawater intrusion. To do this, we assessed hydraulic and geochemical properties depending upon various extraction and recharging conditions. While solely being recharged, the intrusion could be significantly retarded than those of recharge and extraction implied together. At 0.5 to 2 for the ratio of the extraction over the recharge rate, the fresh water was exploited from the tank, where the void regime was simultaneously saturated with the recharged water. In the meantime, the saline water zone was diluted and back-tracked by the recharged water due to forming a hydraulic geochemical barrier around the injection well. However, if the ratio was being increased to greater than 4, saltwater more deeply intruded to the freshwater zone because the artificial recharge was not sufficiently supplied to timely back-fill the void space. When the aquifer water was intermittently extracted at the ratio of $0.5{\sim}2$ over the recharge rate, the value of S.M.I. decreased, but increasing it to more than 4 unlikely escalated the value of S.M.I as much as $3{\sim}47%$ indicating that the salt water intruded. It finally revealed that the proper ratio of extraction/recharge or intermittent extraction would efficiently retracted seawater intrusion while the freshwater sources could be conservatively utilized.

Field study was conducted for 5 months to investigate the effect of leachate recirculation on aerobic landfill stabilization at active landfilling site. The area of field experiment was $24{\times}24m$ and 9 vertical air injection wells with screen ranging 3~9 m were installed. Aerobic landfill operation for 5 months increased average internal landfill temperature to $70^{\circ}C$ and 8 % of landfill height was settled down. $94m^3$ of leachate was recirculated for 1 month to increase moisture content of landfill to favor microbial degradation of organic matter, which resulted in temporary increase of groundwater level and anaerobic environment. But leachate recirculation triggered increase of internal landfill temperature of neighboring monitoring well. Because excessive leachate recirculation decreased internal landfill temperature by cooling effect, internal landfill temperature should be checked to avoid abrupt decrease of temperature during leachate recirculation. Also, to prevent anaerobic environment, intermittent leachate recirculation was recommended.
