Basic oxygen furnace @OF) slag. a by-pradud of thc iron and steelmaking industry produced in largc quantities in Korea, poszs a subslantial disposal challenge. The BOF slag used in this study was if3 CaCO, in total n e u ~ ~ pnowger and application of 7-8 Mgha' was needed to bring soil pH to 6.5 horn pH 5.0-5.5 m silly clay or clay loam sod wnlained about 10% orgaoic matter. A field assay was conducted to shldg whether BOP slag could bc used as a dolomitic k i n g agent for agricullural soils. Four slag rates (0, 4, 8, 12 Mgha-')were investigated for their effcfect on soil pmperti~, mineral concentralions in leaf tissues of rice and soybean, and yield of the crops. Slag application at 8 Mgha-' rate in paddy field increased pH, Ca Mg, P, Si and Fe wntenl in sail and rice yield by 4.3-14.25 depending an the soil type. h upland field the 8 Mghaf ratc increa3ed pH, Ca and Fe wntent m soil and soybean yield by 36.6%. Thus, BOF slag appears to be a useful liming mate&\ulcornerl for corrzch~gs oil acidity on both paddy and upland ficld soils and for innwing Ca, Mg, P, Si, and Fe wncenhation in plants.

This study was conducted to survey vegetation changes and soil characteristics in Saemangeum new reclaimed tidal land. Soil salinity in border area to tidal land was 22.3 dS $m^{-1}$ but showed 1.1~3.44 dS $m^{-1}$ over the distance of 2 km from border line. The vascular plants in survey sites were recorded as total 26 taxa in 6 families. The frequency of species appearance of Aster tripolium, A. subulatus var. sandwicensis were highest by 61.5 and that of Phragmites communis, Puccinellia nipponica were 53.8. The almost vegetations occurred in the patch which range of soil salinity 14 dS $m^{-1}$ were halophytes as Salicornia europaea, Suaeda asparagoides, S. japonica. As lowed soil salinity as 6.7 dS $m^{-1}$, mixed vegetation of halophytes with P. communis, P. nipponica, Carex pumila were occurred. Dominant species in the range of 3.0 dS $m^{-1}$ area were A. subulatus var. sandwicensis, P. communis, Echinochloa spp., Zoysia sinica and Conyza canadensis. Biomass production was the highest in the area of dominant vegetation with P. communis, and mixed zone with P. communis and Aeschynomene indica are followed. The correlation between vegetation biomass and soil salinity, soil pH and dominance index of vegetation were negative. But that of vegetation biomass and soil organic content were positive.
Effect of flooding on the desalting efficiency and the growth of sudan grass, barnyard grass, sesbania and corn was studied in a sandy soil of the Iweon reclaimed tidal land. Flooding plots were treated by 400 (one time flooding), 800 (two times flooding), and 1,200 mm(three times flooding) of water, respectively, and then soil salinities of the treated plots were compared with salinity of the control plot (not flooded) for estimation of desalting effect. Desalting ratio of 1,200 mm treatment was 78.3% for depth 0-20 cm, 70.5% for depth 20-40 cm and 60.8% for depth 40-60 cm, and then the soil salinity reached at 3~6 dS $m^{-1}$. Consequently, it was considered that sandy saline soil was satisfactorily desalted for upland crops to be cultivated by 1,200 mm flooding, but insufficiently desalted by 400 mm and 800 mm flooding because of high salinity ranged 5~14 dS $m^{-1}$ even after flooding treatment. In addition, it was estimated that soil salinity should be controled lower than 7.7 dS $m^{-1}$ in order to obtain more than 80%of crop emergence when four crops are simultaneously cultivated by inter- or mixed cropping in a field. Dry matter yields (kg $10a^{-1}$) was 1,068 for sudan grass, 696for barnyard grass, 1,426 for sesbania, and 1,164 for corn by 1,200 mm flooding treatment, but only 46.8~74.3% by 800 mm flooding treatment and 2.9~25.5% by 400 mm flooding treatment. Therefore, it is concluded that the flooding treatment more than 1,200 mm is necessary for satisfactory desalinization in order for the low salt tolerance crops to be cultivated in the sandy reclaimed tidal land.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the possibility of establishing a tree nursery at Saemangeum reclaimed land and to classify landscape trees based on the salt tolerance. A tree nursery (2.0 ha) was made in Gunsan Okgu area in 2012 with underground drain lines on the reclaimed land established in 2010. Salt content of the nursery soil within the 60 cm depth in 2013 was 5.13 dS/m and 8.20 dS/m for the pre-desalinated and non-desalinated lands, respectively. Thirty-six woody plant species (22 tree species and 14 shrub species at ages of 1 to 4) with a total of 3,943 individuals were planted in early April, 2013 and their growth performance was monitored until September of the same year. The average survival rate of the transplanted plants was 71.4% in late September, suggesting the high possibility of establishing a tree nursery at the reclaimed land. Based on the survival rate and tree vigor (amount of healthy leaves and crown development), the following 17 species with some salt tolerance were classified into three groups: "salt tolerant group" (3 species, Tamarix chinensis, Cudrania tricuspidata, Ilex serrata), "recommended group" (5 species, Pinus thunbergii, Albizia julibrissin, Ligustrum obtusifolium, Rosa rugosa, Pleioblatus pygmaeus), "plantable group" (9 species, Zelkova serrata, Hibiscus syriacus, Elaeagnus umbellata, Sorbus alnifolia, Sophora japonica, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Quercus acutissima, Ulmus parvifolia, Robinia pseudoacacia). Seven tree species that had been adapted to the reclaimed land for three to four years before being transplanted to new reclaimed land in Gunsan Okgu area showed average survival rate of 98%, suggesting that pre-conditioned trees would survive well in the reclaimed land.
Soil conditioner, such as $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ (gypsum), popped rice hulls (PRH), and PRH with zeolite, were treated to the silt loam of Mangyeong in Saemangeum tideland reclaimed as 1550 (G1), 3100 (G2) and 6200 (G3) of gypsum kg/10 a, 1000(H1), 2000(H2), and 3000 (H3) of PRH kg/10 a, and 200 (HZ1), 400 (HZ2), 800 (HZ3) of zeolite kg/10 a added to 1500 PRH kg/10 a, respectively, each year until 2006 from 2004 for soil aggregation. Under these conditions with growing bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) it was analyzed cations in soil, such as $K^+$, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$, at 60, 90, and 120 days after treatment (DAT) to research how soil conditioners influenced to change those contents in soils, respectively. The change of cations in soil was almost the same things as fine sandy loam that gypsum treated decreased remarkably contents of $K^+$, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ in soil. The change of $K^+$ content in soil by continuous using soil conditioners was gradually decreased in the order of 2004>2005>2006, regardless of the sorts and levels of soil treated conditioners, and $K^+$ content was high in the order of gypsum$Na^+$ content was high in the order of gypsum$Mg^{2+}$ content in soil was increased in the order of gypsum$Ca^{2+}$ content in soil was remarkably increased with continuous treatment of gypsum, and its level was in the order of 2004<2005<2006.

Evapotranspiration is an important factor in the energy interaction process between the surface and the air. Over a vegetable canopy, evapotranspiration was investigated by measuring the sensible heat flux, the soil heat flux and the net radiation flux. Evapotranspiration based on routine AWS data is in good agreement with that estimated from the energy balance equation except for weak wind shear less than $1s^{-1}$ and a cloudy period. Soil heat flux can be approximately to 10% of net radiation flux at the lower layer. When the slope of the saturation vapor pressure versus temperature curve ($de_s/dT$) is approximated to 1.5, the evapotranspiration can be described in function of the net radiation energy flux over Goheung bay wetland covered with the vegetable canopy, reeds.
In order to interpret yield response of sugar beet to nitrogen fertilizer, and pig manure compost in saline-sodic soil of reclaimed tidal land, 4 kinds of response model, i.e., quadratic, exponential, square root, and linear response, and plateau model, are applied. The root fresh yield of sugar beet decreased exponentially with the increase of soil EC. The root fresh yield of sugar beet to nitrogen fertilizer was fitted best to the linear response, and plateau model among 4 yield response models with highly significant determination coefficient ($R^2=0.92^{**}$). The optimum N rate determined on the model was 138 kg N $ha^{-1}$. The root fresh yield of sugar beet to pig manure compost was fitted best to the quadratic model among 4 yield response models with highly significant determination coefficient ($R^2=0.99^{**}$). The maximum N rate determined on the model was 9.17 ton $ha^{-1}$. In conclusion, the proper model to interpret the yield of sugar beet in saline-sodic soil differs with the kinds of nutrient, linear response, and plateau model for fertilizer nitrogen, and quadratic model to pig manure compost.
Mapping of salinity distribution in the reclaimed lands was attempted by using the electromagnetic inductance technique. Field study was conducted to monitor ground conductivity with an electromagnetic inductance, EM 38 (Geonics), and electrical conductivity of the saturated extract, ECe of the soils, at the Daeho reclaimed land. EM values of horizontal mode, EMh, and vertical mode, EMv, mode were recorded at the interval of $2m{\times}2m$ from the ground. Soil samples were taken through the profile down to 100cm for calibration. ECe of poor drained area of Daeho, were in the range of $19.50-91.50ds\;m^{-1}$, while ECe of well-drained area ranged from $1.10-34.40ds\;m^{-1}$. Multiple regression equations for the measured EMv, EMh, and ECe were highly significant. The EMh showed higher correlation with ECe than EMv. With the multiple equation, ECgM could be calculated. Correlation between ECe and ECgM was the highest ($r=0.753^{***}$), when EMI readings were taken on the ground. The relationships were highly significant below 30 cm height of measurement, With the EM38 measurement, the salinity distribution was effectively expressed for the experimental filed in Daeho reclaimed land.
