Purpose: This study was to know the correlation among refractive error and the dimensions of ocular components on older adults. Methods: The subjects were 95 older age who had no eye diseases. The refractive error, corneal radius, corneal diopter, axial length, anterior chamber depth and lens thickness were measured and analysed. Results: The axial length(AL)/corneal radius(CR) ratio was positively correlated with the corneal diopter, axial length, the anterior chamber depth. Then it was negatively correlated with corneal radius. It was shown that the highest correlation was between the corneal diopter and axial length (r = -0.545, p = 0.000). The spherical equivalent of the refractive error was negatively correlated with the AL/CR ratio. Conclusions: It was shown that the AL/CR ratio was a very important indicator for diagnosing the refractive error of the old age.
Purpose: To compare and analyze the ocular changes after wearing conventional and 2-weeks cosmetic tinted contact lens, which were made of different material and fabrication method. Methods: Thirty five university students, age of twenties, participated in this study. With daily wearing schedule, they had worn temporary cosmetic tinted lens for 2 weeks and conventional tinted lens for two month in their right and left eye, respectively. Subjective symptoms and objective signs were graded by using CCLRU scales and corneal thickness were measured after 1 day and 2 months wearing, and under or over 5 hours wearing in a day, respectively. Results: Major subjective symptoms found in the student wearing cosmetic tinted contact lens for a 1 day and 2 months were dryness, redness, foreign body sensation and itchiness. It was also found that those symptoms were more severe in left eye (conventional cosmetic tinted contact lens) than right eye (2-weeks cosmetic tinted contact lens). However, symptoms of redness in both eyes showed statistically significant difference in the case of 1 day and 2 months wearing and under or over 5 hours wearing in a day (p=0.000). After 2 months wearing, left eye with conventional cosmetic tinted contact lens showed limbal redness (p=0.000) and bulbar conjunctival redness (p=0.012) with statistically significance, whereas there was no significant difference in both eyes before lens wear. Left eye showed statistically significant changes in all objective signs, but right eye showed palpebral conjunctival redness, corneal staining and conjunctival staining. Therefore, it was concluded that conventional cosmetic tinted contact lens may be more effective on ocular changes after wearing of lens. A statistically significant changes in both eyes after wearing lens were found that corneal thickness increased about $5{\mu}m$ (p=0.001) in right eye whereas $7{\mu}m$ (p=0.004) in left eye. Conclusions: A statistically significant number of participants in this study preferred to wearing of high Dk/t temporary cosmetic tinted contact lens made by sandwich method which resulted in less ocular changes and may give more healthy and safe ocular conditions.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between axial length/corneal radius ratio and refractive error for human eye. Ocular components were measured Baush & Lomb keratometer, Holden-Payor pachometer, and Stoz Compuscan. Refractive error was measured by subjective refraction. The results were as follows; 1) Spherical equivalent refractive error and axial length/corneal radius ratio was very highly correlated with the correlation coefficient for -0.89. 2) Axial length/corneal radius ratio and axial length, vitreous chamber depth were highly correlated that the correlation coefficients were 0.82, 0.80 respectively. 3) Axial length/corneal radius ratio and anterior chamber depth, corneal power, corneal radius, lens power were correlated with the correlation coefficients for 0.57, 0.40, -0.39, -0.35 respectively. 4) There were no significant correlation between axial length/corneal radius ratio and lens thickness, and corneal thickness.
Purpose: We report two cases of corneal edema in patients who presented with bilateral blurry vision due to vaporized amines while working in a polyurethane processing plant. Case summary: A 28-year-old male presented with bilateral blurred vision. His work involved solidifying polyurethane liquid and he often found himself exposed to polyurethane heat and gas. On examination, the patient's uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was 20/40 (right) and 30/50 (left). A slit lamp examination revealed subepithelial microbullae in both eyes. The central corneal thickness (CCT) was also increased in both eyes, measuring $698{\mu}m$ (right) and $672{\mu}m$ (left). After prescribing 0.5% moxifloxacin and, 1% fluorometholone eye drops for 3 days in both eyes, the UCVA recovered to 20/40 (right) and 20/20 (left). The CCT decreased to $644{\mu}m$ (right) and $651{\mu}m$ (left), and the microbullae improved significantly in the left eye. The second patient was a 34-year-old female who presented with bilateral decreased visual acuity while at work. She worked in a factory that produced car seat filling. Her UCVA was 20/25 (right) and 20/20 (left). The CCT by specular microscopy was $537{\mu}m$ (right) and $541{\mu}m$ (left). On slit lamp examination, both eyes demonstrated bilateral central subepithelial edema. The patient did not attend any follow-up outpatient appointments after the initial presentation. Conclusions: Exposure to vaporized amines such as polyurethane may causereversible corneal toxicityeven without direct contact. Further consideration should be given to ocular safety and protection from amine compounds in the industrial field. On examination, the patient's uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was 20/40 (right) and 30/50 (left). The present study was conducted to investigate the structural changes in rat cornes. Sixty eyes from one-day-old uneyed rats, fourty eyes from 10-weeks-old adult rats were used. With the increase of age, the epithelial layer was thickened by the addition of new successive cellular layers. Then, the new-born rat's epithelial cells formed a pentagonal shape, and the quality of decidual cells showed a high electron-density, although the boundary between cells was distinctive. The newly produced cells showed a low electron-density so that there was the distinctive difference between light and darkness. In Bowman's layer, collagen fibrils demonstrate a regularly arranged structure along with the age. In stroma's layer, the density of keratocytes was decreased and thereby progressively flattened during the development. The collagenous layer of the adult rats was more distinctive than that of the new-born rats in a form of vertical and horizontal parallel alignment running vertically and horizontally. Descemet's membrane changed its structure significantly along with the age. It changed the shape from "banded-layer" to "non-banded layer" gradually. The thickness was also increased along with the age. Regardless of developmental stages, the endothelium is usually monolayer. During the developmental process, endothelial cells disappeared, so the density of endothelium was also decreased. The empty spaces were replaced by the expansion of adjacent cells.
Purpose: In this study the correlation among the myopic refractive error and ocular components in primary school students was investigated. Methods: The subjects were 62 children who had no eye diseases. The refractive error, corneal radius, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, axial length were measured and analysed. Results: Myopic refractive error in primary school students was negatively correlated with the axial length (1~3rd grade r=-0.653, p=0.000/4~6th grade r=-0.742, p=0.000), AL/CR ratio (1~3rd grade r=-0.571, p=0.000/4~6th grade r=-0.852, p=0.000). Conclusions: It was shown that the axial length and axial length(AL)/corneal radius(CR) ratio were very important data for myopic refractive error in primary school students.
Purpose : The size and regular array of the collagen fibers in the corneal stroma have very close correlation with transparency. Simulation was carried out to investigate the change of light transmittance according to the array structure and collagen fiber layer thickness. Methods : The collagen fibers in corneal stroma were arranged in regular hexagonal, hexagonal, square and random shapes with OptiFDTD simulation software, and the light transmittance was analyzed. In square array, the light transmittance according to the density change was confirmed by when the number of collagen fibers in the simulation space was the same and the light transmittance was examined when the number and density of collagen fibers were changed. Results : When the number of collagen fibers is the same, the density becomes smaller and the thickness of the fibrous layer becomes thicker in order of arrangement of square, regular hexagonal, random and hexagonal. As a result of measuring the light transmittance by changing the array structure, the light transmittance measured at the detector at the same position was almost similar regardless of the array structure. In the detectors D0, D1, D2 and D3, the maximum transmittance is shown in square, hexagonal and square, regular hexagonal and regular hexagonal array structure, and the minimum transmittance is hexagonal, random, hexagonal and square, and square array structure. However, the difference between the maximum transmittance and the minimum transmittance was almost the same within 1%. When the number of collagen fibers was the same, the light transmittance of the rectangular array structure decreased with increasing fiber layer thickness. And as the thickness increased, the light transmittance decreased more when the number of collagen fibers decreased. Conclusion : Even though the collagen array structure changed, the light transmittance is almost similar regardless of the arrangement structure. However, as the array structure was changed, the thickness of the collagen fiber layer changed, and as the thickness increased, the light transmittance decreased. In other words, the transparency of the corneal stroma is more closely related to the thickness of the fibrous layer than the array of collagen fibers.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the relevance between refractive and anatomical changes temporarily on the eyes after alcohol ingestion. Methods: Eight subjects (16 eyes) which were $24.5{\pm}1.5$ aged males drunk the alcohol of 0.42 g per kg of body weight within 30 minutes. Refractive errors, the radius of corneal curvature, corneal thickness, pupillary size, intraocular pressure, and the length of the ocular axis at 1 h, 4 h, and 24 h after alcohol ingestion were compared with them of non-alcoholic state. Results: At 1 h after alcohol ingestion, breath alcohol concentration was the highest (p<0.001), more negative spherical power was needed (p<0.05) for correction, pupillary diameter was decreased (p<0.05), intraocular pressure was decreased (p<0.001), and the length of the ocular axis was increased compared with each one of non-alcoholic state. At 4 h after alcohol ingestion, all anatomical changes were the same tendency as at 1 h after alcohol ingestion. But at 24 h after alcohol ingestion, both refractive changes and anatomical changes were not significant compared with them of non-alcoholic state. Conclusions: Temporary changes of refractive error after alcohol ingestion may be related with decrease of intraocular pressure and increase of the length of ocular axis.
A mathematical model is proposed to analyze the force; acting on the hard contact lens fitted on the cornea. The model incorporates the nonlinear equations and their numerical solution program, based on the formulations of surface tension force arising from the capillary action in the tear-film layer between the lens and cornea. The model simulates how the adhesion between lens and cornea varies according to the base curves and diameters of the lenses. When the spherical lens is fitted on the spherical cornea it is to rotate downward due to the weight of lens itself until it reaches an equilibrium position along the cornea where the counter(upward) moment caused by net force between the upper and lower portion of the periphery of lens. It is found that both the adhesion and displacement of lens along the cornea, where the gravity of lens balances the capillary-induced upward force, increases rapidly as the base curve of lens increases, i.e., as the lens gets flatter, while the increase in the diameter of lenses has resulted in the less increase in the rotation and adhesion. With the base curve and diameters of lenses being remained constant the increase in surface tension of tear film yields the increase in the adhesion between the cornea and lens while the initial rotation of lens is inversely proportional to the surface tension of the tear film.
A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the damped motion of contact lens which is initially displaced from the equilibrium position. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the formulations of restoring force arising from the capillary action in the tear-film layer between the lens and cornea. The model predicts the capillary action induced surface tension, time dependence of displacement of lens when it is released from the equilibrium position. It seems that the motion of lens is similar to the typical over-damped oscillation caused by the large viscous friction in the liquid layer between the cornea and lens. The effect of variables such as base curves, lens diameters and thickness of tear film layer were illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. The time required for the lens to return to the original position increases as the liquid layer thickness increases and it decreases as the diameter of lens increases. With the certain value of base curve the time interval is found to be minimum. The free vibrations of lenses were also simulated varying the parameters such as base curve, diameter, layer thickness. The resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the liquid layer thickness and it increases as the lens diameter increases. The resonant frequency of lens has a maximum when the diameter is of certain value. If the external impulse or force of the same frequency as the natural frequency of contact lens acted on the cornea in vivo it may cause an excessive movement and thus it might cause the distortion 10 the lens or be pulled off the eye.
