In Jeju island, the southernmost island of Korea, the field soils are mostly consisted of volcanic and non-volcanic soils. Animal manures of 0, 50, 100, and 150 MT/ha were treated to analyse the humus content changes by application amounts and the soil types. The results are as follows; Humus distribution type was A in the most of the volcanic soils while a few soils was type B, and it was possible to confirm that the humus process has occurred in the soils. Most of the non-volcanic soils was Rp and B type, therefore, the humus content change pattern was different from the volcanic soils. The nitrate-nitrogen content and the humus content showed positive correlation of $R^2=0.5263$ in the volcanic soils, while that of non-volcanic soils was $R^2=0.524$. The carbon content and the humus content showed positive correlation of $R^2=0.469$ in the volcanic soils, while that of non-volcanic soils was $R^2=0.550$.
The characteristics of nitrogen mineralization in upland soil was studied with 27-week incubation at $25^{\circ}C$. The used soils in this experiment were received six kinds of livestock manure compost each year for four years. Six different composts, which were chicken (CHM), pig (PIM), and cow (COM) manure composted without bulking agent, and chicken (CHMS), pig (PIMS), and cow (COMS) manure composted with sawdust as a bulking agent, were selected for this study. The first-order model was fit to the observed mineral nitrogen (N) vs incubation days using a non-linear regression procedure. The soil potential for N mineralization (No) of manure compost (CHM, PIM, and COM) treated soils were higher than those of the manure-sawdust compost (CHMS, PIMS, and COMS) treated soils. The No value of PIM applied soil was 15.0 mg 100 $g^{-1}$, which was the highest value among the treatments. The amount of N mineralized in compost applied soils ranged from 8.1% to 11.9% of the total N content in soils and increased with increasing total N content in soils. The organic matter content in compost applied soils were negatively correlated with No value (r = $-0.69^*$). Therefore, our result indicated that determination of N application rate in livestock manure compost applied soil should be based on total nitrogen content better than soil organic matter content.

Humic acid was used soil amendment or functional fertilizer in Korean agriculture, and its cation exchangeable capacity was high enough to increase soil buffering from plant toxicant. This study was conducted to evaluate effects of humic acid powder (HA) on composting of livestock manure (LM) and of its application on growth of lettuce. Treatments were designed as follows; livestock manure compost (LM+sawdust+bark+castor meal; Control), control+0.1% HA (0.1% HA), control+0.5% HA (0.5% HA), control+1.0% HA (1.0% HA), control+3.0% HA (3.0% HA), and control+5.0% HA (5.0% HA). The changes of temperature, water content, organic matter content, total nitrogen and ratio of organic matter and nitrogen in HA treatments were similar to those of control. Although pH of 3.0% HA and 5.0% HA blending with HA and LM was lower than those of others, it unaffected by HA blending during composting. Humic acid content of HA treatments was increased by 1.7~4.4 folds than that of control. As compared with odor index, 3.0% HA and 5% HA were decreased than control for composting time. Application of 3.0% HA increased the dry weight of lettuce by about 7% than that of control.

This study was carried out to assess the composting temperature effects on germination of curled dock and barnyard millet seeds. After the seeds wrapped in gauze were buried in the compost heap, the seeds were taken out under monitering the temperature for measuring germination rate at 1.5, 3, 10 and 20 days of composting. The germination rate of the seeds was directly related to the temperature of the compost heap regardless of the type of composting method. The seeds that buried in the compost for 1.5 days at a temperature of $60{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ were completely lost their germination ability. However, the germination rate of the seeds retained about 10% even after 20 days when compost temperature was below $51^{\circ}C$. Reulsting data suggests that, it is necessary to keep the compost temperature at least $55^{\circ}C$ for more than 3 days in order to suppress the germination of the seeds. On the other hand, if the temperature of the compost rises by $60{\sim}70^{\circ}C$, the seeds will lose their gemination ability with in 1.5 days. In conclusion, aerobic composting would be more effective in suppressing germination ability of curled dock seed and barnyard millet seeds.
Manures contain a variety of pathogenic microorganisms that pose a risk to human or animal. On-farm contaminations through contaminated manure were considered likely sources of the pathogen for several outbreak. Pathogenic microorganisms may survive in low numbers during the composting process and subsequently regrow to high levels under favorable conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate effect of temperature on survival of Salmonella enterica and Staphylococcus aureus in livestock manure compost. Commercial livestock manure compost (manure 60%, sawdust 40%) was inoculated with S. enterica and S. aureus. Compost was incubated at four different temperatures (10, 25, 35, and $55^{\circ}C$) for 20 weeks. Samples were taken every week during incubation depending on the given conditions. S. enterica persisted for up to 1 day in livestock manure compost at $55^{\circ}C$, over 140 days at $10^{\circ}C$, 140 days at $25^{\circ}C$, and 70 days at $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. S. aureus persisted for up to 1 day in livestock manure compost at $55^{\circ}C$ and 90 days at $10^{\circ}C$, 70 days at $25^{\circ}C$, and 40 days at $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results indicate that S. enterica and S. aureus persisted longer under low temperature condition. S. enterica survived longer than S. aureus at three different temperatures (10, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$). This study will provide useful and practical guidelines to applicators of soil in deciding appropriate handling and time frames for land application of livestock manure compost for sustainable agriculture. Results from these studies provide useful information in identifying manure handling practices to reduce the risk of S. enterica and S. aureus transmission to fresh produce.

The best way to treat livestock manure is a recycling the manure to arable land as an organic fertilizer. In this study, fermented cow manure compost and pig manure compost were used as a raw materials for pelletizing. The changes of physicochemical properties of each composts and pellets were investigated. The aim of this research was to improve availability of livestock manure compost. In pelletizing process of fermented livestock manure compost, the optimal water content to make pellet was around 40%. When clay was mixed by volume more than 15% as a bonding agent, the condition of pelletizing process was beginning to improve. On a dry matter basis, the contents of N, P and K of fermented pig manure compost were 2.05%, 1.89% and 1.31%, respectively. After pelletizing, the contents of compost pelleted with the pig manure compost were 1.96% 1.73% and 0.89%, respectively. The same parameters of cow manure compost were 2.52%, 1.01% and 2.98%, respectively. After processing, the contents of compost pelleted with the cow manure compost were 2.45%, 1.10% and 2.93%, respectively. After pelletizing, there were little change in the content of heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, As and Hg. When pelleted compost dried naturally was submerged in water, it was completely dissolved in 30 minutes. On the other hand, Pelleted compost dried with the mechanical convection oven set $70^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours was completely dissolved in 960 minutes. The volume and weight of pelleted compost were decreased with time. After 30 days of storing, the weight of pelleted compost was decreased by 15% compared with its original weight. The volume of it was decreased by 17~25% in the same time.
To investigate the growth and nutrient uptake response of sorghum${\times}$sudangrass ($S{\times}S$) hybrid to different rate of livestock manure compost, a field experiment was conducted in the experimental grassland of Chonnam National University. Six treatments were laid out in a randomized block design with triplicates; control (no input), synthetic fertilizer (20 g N $m^{-2}$ and 20 g $P_2O_5\;m^{-2}$), compost 1 (3.4 g N $m^{-2}$ and 3.6 g $P_2O_5\;m^{-2}$), compost 2 (6.8 g N $m^{-2}$ and 7.2 g $P_2O_5\;m^{-2}$), compost 4 (13.4 g N $m^{-2}$ and 14.4 g $P_2O_5\;m^{-2}$), and compost 6 (20.2 g N $m^{-2}$ and 21.6 g $P_2O_5\;m^{-2}$). Ninety days after treatment, above-ground parts of the plants were harvested and measured for dry matter yield (DMY) and amounts of nutrients (N and P) uptake. Synthetic fertilizer application achieved the greatest DMY (2.4 kg $m^{-2}$) and nutrient uptake (38.3 g N $m^{-2}$ and 15.3 g $P_2O_5\;m^{-2}$). Increasing compost application rate tended to enhance DMY accumulation and nutrient uptake (P<0.01), but DMYs of compost 4 (1.9 kg $m^{-2}$) and 6 (1.8 kg $m^{-2}$) treatments were not different. Therefore, it was suggested that application compost alone may not achieve DMY of $S{\times}S$ hybrid compatible to synthetic fertilizer application. As nutrient uptake efficiency data showed that availability of compost P could be better than SF, it might be a strategy to apply compost as P source with supplementary N application such as liquid manure, SF or green manure if necessary considering availability of N input and the yield goals.

A field experiment was carried out to compare the nitrate nitrogen concentration, sugar content and animal intake of low $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) grown under application of animal manure in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 40MT in cattle manure, and 30MT/ha in swine and poultry manure. The four NLCF's recommended hybrids used in this study were Pioneer 988, TE-Haygrazer and NC+ 855 (heading type), and Jumbo(headless type). The nitrate nitrogen concentration of forage was 365mg/kg at 50~60cm of plant height, 501mg at 100~120cm, and 502mg at 200~220cm, regardless of animal manure type and cultivar. The nitrate nitrogen concentration of NC+ 855 and P 988 was 519 and 526mg, respectively, and were higher than that(317mg) of Jumbo(P<0.05). The nitrate nioogen concentration of stems was 376mg, and significantly higher than that(135mg) of leaves(P<0.05) regardless of cultivar, and lower parts of stems and leaves were higher than those of upper parts of plants. The sugar contents of four $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids were ranged between 3.1 and $3.7^{\circ}$ in cattle manure, 2.9 and $3.3^{\circ}$ in swine manure, and 2.8 and $4.9^{\circ}$ in poultry manure. The sugar content of NC+ 855 was the highest as $3.9^{\circ}$, p 988 was second as $3.4^{\circ}$, and then TE-Haygrazer and Jumbo were lower as $3.2^{\circ}$ and $2.9^{\circ}$, respectively. Animal intake of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrids P 988 and NC+ 855 were slightly higher than those of Jumbo and TE-Haygrazer grown under application of cattle manure. Also the average intake of P 988 was a little higher than that of Jumbo. However, there were no significant differences of forage intake among few recommended $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids.
