  • Identification of the exact cause of a building fire is generally difficult, because the source and initially ignited objects are often severely damaged or even lost during the early stages of the fire. We made an experimental attempt to reasonably estimate the burning during the very early stages of a fire, and identify its source and causes. The case we studied was an apartment fire, which occurred in Tokyo, in July 2002. The fire was extinguished just after flashover, and the on-site investigations suggested the fire started from the TV and TV stand, which had been damaged so severely that it was difficult to conclude that the TV was the ultimate cause of the fire, simply from the on-site investigation. We conducted a series of burn tests using a TV and other products identical to those actually used in the apartment. Tests were set-up and procedures were carefully studied to recreate the conditions of the articles that remained, and of the room itself. The tests demonstrated that the conditions in the apartment could be recreated only when the fire started inside the TV and came into close contact with dresser.

  • In the case of residential facilities, general fire scenarios cannot be applied. Becauseit is difficult to quantify due to the types of combustibles and various fire loads. Existing research conducting surveys of combustibles, but research on fire characteristics is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, an Excel macro that can be quantified by experimenting with the HRR experiments of sofa, drawer, mattress, chair, desk and TV, which are typical combustibles. As a result of experimenting 6 loading combustibles in domestic residential facilities by using a furniture calorimeter, values of 2,391.26kW appeared from the sofa, 1,891.80kW from the drawer, 1,778.95kW from the mattress, 1,104kW from the chair, 291kW from the desk, and 135.09kW from the TV. Also, by applying the α value of the fire growth rate by classifying fire-growing speeds at NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm Code 2007, Annex B), the mattress can be defined as Very Fast, the sofa and drawer Fast, the TV Slow, the desk Slow, and the chair Medium.

  • In Korea, buildings are becoming skyscrapers due to restrictions on land. The performance-oriented design was introduced in 2009 for fire safety of such buildings, but the application of the combustible data through engineering design and experiment is a poor reality. Large buildings are used for complex purposes, especially since the density of the office facilities is high, the study conducted a study on the combustible materials of the office facilities and the thermal speed and fire load of the main combustibles of the office facilities were calculated.

  • The surveying method for determine moveable fuel load estimates is presented. Two types of offices, open plan design and compartmented layout were surveyed and Data are presented for fuel load densities in ten office buildings. Office building fuel load in Korea range from 36kg/$m^2$ to 52kg/$m^2$ with 95% confidence level and represented mean 44.27kg/$m^2$. The results of the study presented the impact of the office layout and computer accessary contribution on the fuel load. In addition, a comparison of fuel load that found at this survey and that found at Fire Protection Dept., University of Maryland, U. S. A was made.

  • With the spread of FMD and AI in the country livestock farmers have used lime(CaO) prevalently and due to incorrect storage lime served as a fire ignition source in a number of cases. As combined chemically with water, lime has exothermic reaction. Then In these experiments we want to know how exothermic reaction - caused by lime - acts as sources of fire ignition in any circumstances and conditions. So we have done experimental work of ignition temperature and ignition process in the artificial conditions as lime combined chemically with water. As a result, we have confirmed that lime could be flammable material sufficiently as a fire ignition source with the proper presence of heat and moisture conditions. If the lime served as sources of fire ignition, as identification techniques of fire scene, we must ascertain the existence of water, flammable material and Calcium Hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$). We should take special precautions in order to prevent fire and educate the safe handling of lime to the manufacturer and agricultural cooperative's joint livestock farmers who product or use lime.

  • The burned patterns of fire are changed very diversely according to the direction of wind, conditions of combustibles, shape of buildings and so on in the fire scenes. And careful attentions are required on the determining of ignition point and fire causes. In this study, we examined that the burned pattern of fuel controlled fires and ventilation controled fires that impose a heavy burden on fire investigators, carbonized marks of floor, formed by flammable liquids, and combustion marks of falling firing materials through the fire cases. We suggest a proper fire investigation method.
