  • The stirred and thixoformed $SiC_p/AZ91HP$ Mg composites are studied on the basis of microstructural analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The products of interfacial reaction are identified as $Mg_2Si$, MgO and $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ phases and the crystallized phases are found to be orthorhmbic $Al_6Mn$ and decagonal T phases. It is shown that $Mg_2Si$ and $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ phases are found at the surface of $SiC_p$ and $Al_6Mn$ is found near interface and crystallized on the matrix. Phase identification is carried out by crystallographic work based on primitive cell volume, zero order Laue zone (ZOLZ) patterns and single convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns containing higher order Laue zone ring from a nanosized region.

  • The recycle of PWR spent fuels in a CANDU reactor, so called the tandem fuel cycle is Investigated in this study. This scheme of utilizing Pm spent fuels will ease the shortage of spent fuel storage capacity as well as will improve the use of uranium resources. The minimum modification to the design of present CANDU reactor is seeked in the recycle. Nine different fuel types are considered in this work and are classified into two categories: refabrication and reconfiguration For refabrication, PWR spent fuels are processed and refabricated into the present 37 rod lattice structure of fuel bundle, and for reconfiguration, meanwhile, spent fuels are simply disassembled and rods are cut to fit into the present grid configuration of fuel bundle without refabrication. For each fuel option, the neutronics calculation of lattice was conducted to evaluate the allowable burnup and power distribution. The fuel cycle cost of each option was also computed to assess the economic justification. The result show that most tandem fuel cycle options considered in this study are technically feasible as well as economically viable.

  • The effect of particle size and compaction pressure on the thermoelectric properties of n-type $FeSi_2$ was investigated. The starting powders with various particle size were pressed into a compact (compaction pressure; $70{\sim}220kg/cm^2$). The compact specimens were sintered at 1473 K for 7 h and annealed at 1103 K for 100 h under Ar atmosphere to transform to the semiconducting ${\beta}$-phase. The microstructure and phases of the specimens were observed by SEM, XRD and EDS. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured simultaneously for the same specimen at r.t.~1023 K in Ar atmosphere. The electrical conductivity increased with decreasing particle size and hence the increases of relative density of the sintered body and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi due to a increase of the electrical conductivity. The Seebeck coefficient exhibited the maximum value at about 700~800 K and decreased with decreasing particle size. This must be due to a increase of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi. On the other hand, the change of compaction pressure appeared to have little effect on the thermoelectric properties. Consequently, the power factor would be affected more by particle size than compaction pressure.

  • High temperature densification behaviors of alumina powder compacts were investigated under hot pressing and hot isostatic pressing. An alumina part of valve-head shape was fabricated under hot pressing and its forming process was simulated by finite element calculation. an alumina powder compact encapsulated by a stainless steel container was also densified under hot isostatic pressing. Inhomogeneous deformations during hot isostatic pressing due to the canning effect were observed experimentally and predicted by finite element analysis.

  • A Abstract Producing process of FGM by SHS process has been investigated and $TiB_2$/Cu based FGM was fabricated by the process. When raw material powders were stacked on, Cu substrate, composition profile can be graded. This stacked body was compressed and vacuums sealed into the capsule for the synthesis. This sample was ignited and compressed under high h hydro - pressure. By the observation of the crystal phases and microstructures of produced $TiB_2$/Cu FGM samples, the compositional gradient was able to be identified.

  • Biaxial flexure strength (ball-on-3-ball) and fracture toughness (indentation microfracture) of heat-pressable glass-ceramics for dental use were investigated in this study. Crystal phase and microstructure of glass-ceramics were analyzed by XRD. SEM, and TEM. Crack propagation in specimens was not effectively arrested by dispersed crystalline particles. However, higher degree of crystallization probably contributes to strengthening of glass-ceramics. Better clinical reliability can be expected from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic because of its significantly higher biaxial flexure strength and fracture toughness.

  • Theoretical backgrounds on the experimental methods of explosive welding, explosive forming and shock consolidation of powders are introduced. Explosive welding experiments of titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SUS 304) plate were carried out. It was revealed that a series of waves of metal jet are generated in the contact surface between both materials; and that the optimal collision velocity and collision angle is about 2,100~2,800 m/s and $15{\sim}20^{\circ}$, respectively. Also, explosive forming experiments of Al plate were performed and compared to a conventional press forming method. The results confirmed that the shock-loaded Al plate has a larger curvature deformation than those made using conventional press forming. For shock consolidation of powders, the propagation behaviors of a detonation wave and underwater shock wave generated by explosion of an explosive are investigated by means of numerical calculation. The results revealed that the generation and convergence of reflected waves occur at the wall and center position of water column, and also the peak pressure of the converged reflected waves was 20 GPa which exceeds the detonation pressure. As results from the consolidation experiments of metal/ceramic powders ($Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$), shock-consolidated $Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$ bulk without cracks was successfully obtained by adapting the suggested water container and strong bonding between powder particles was confirmed through microscopic observations.

  • This paper describes the forming conditions of smart-phone curved glass using the glass molding system with force applying system. The force applying system is composed of a body, a motor and gear, a rectilinear movement structure, a force sensor, a LVDT sensor (Linear Variable Differential Transformer), a up and down moving block, and so on. The glass molding system for characteristic test to find the forming conditions consists of the force applying system and a chamber, a metallic mold, a upper heater, a lower heater and so on. The characteristic test for forming conditions of smart-phone curved glass was carried out at forming temperature $620^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ using the glass molding system. As a result of the characteristic test, the forming conditions of curved glass could be found, and it is thought that the conditions can be used to apply to the system for producing in large quantities.
