Speed Control of Marine Gas Turbine Engine using Nonlinear PID Controller (비선형 PID 제어기를 이용한 선박용 가스터빈 엔진의 속도 제어)

  • A gas turbine engine plays an important role as a prime mover that is used in the marine transportation field as well as the space/aviation and power plant fields. However, it has a complicated structure and there is a time delay element in the combustion process. Therefore, an elaborate mathematical model needs to be developed to control a gas turbine engine. In this study, a modeling technique for a gas generator, a PLA actuator, and a metering valve, which are major components of a gas turbine engine, is explained. In addition, sub-models are obtained at several operating points in a steady state based on the trial running data of a gas turbine engine, and a method for controlling the engine speed is proposed by designing an NPID controller for each sub-model. The proposed NPID controller uses three kinds of gains that are implemented with a nonlinear function. The parameters of the NPID controller are tuned using real-coded genetic algorithms in terms of minimizing the objective function. The validity of the proposed method is examined by applying to a gas turbine engine and by conducting a simulation.

  • The material properties of gas turbine components change during the daily start/stop thermal cycle because of exposure to the hot combustion gas. Recently, single-crystal Ni-based superalloys have been used to manufacture many hot-gas components for gas turbines. However, the user needs to depend on the manufacturer for maintenance issues because of the lack of data required for predicting blade life and material degradation. In this study, we investigate the time-dependent degradation of first-stage blades at various operating facilities to collect the basic data for life assessment and damage analysis. The blade material is a single-crystal Ni-based superalloy, CMSX-4, and the EOH (equivalent operating hours) are 25,000 and 52,000, respectively. We prepared the test specimen directly from used blades and carried out mechanical tests and microstructural observations.

Performance Test of Metal 3D Printed Micro Gas Turbine Engine Combustor (초소형 가스터빈 엔진용 금속 3D 프린팅 연소기 성능 시험)

  • In this study, a set of performance tests on 3D-printed combustor components were carried out to investigate the performance of 3D-printed component and its feasibility for micro gas turbine engines. The test were conducted for four different equivalence ratios under two different engine operating conditions. The measurement results show that the tested combustor had a low total pressure loss coefficient and a uniform exit temperature distribution. However, the combustion efficiency values are less than 93.5% owing to the large amount of UHC and CO, which is considerably lower than a typical gas turbine engine combustor. The performance data obtained from the tests will be used for combustor performance improvements using 3D-printing technology.

  • The global market for temperature sensors for power plants is estimated at around 35 billion won, of which South Korea relies on imported products for more than 95 percent. This study is that a temperature measurement device for gas turbine rotators for power plants and can be applied to more than 800 of 100 MW gas turbine generators operating in Korea. This study has improved durability by changing the shape of the measuring part, structure of the connecting part, and material changes, and is a component technology applicable to other measuring devices such as humidity, gas and hydraulic pressure used in precision chemical process and plant export industry. As a result of this study, temperature sensors designed as three types of sensors for measuring the temperature of the gas turbine for power plants met Class 1 temperature accuracy in the range of 0℃ to 300℃, and improved durability significantly compared to similar products.

  • The solution was developed for the maintenance decision support of combined cycle power plant gas turbine. The developed solution was applied to MHI501G gas turbine and is, in present, on the process of field test at GUNSAN combined cycle power plant, South Korea. The developed solution provides the calculated result of optimal overhaul maintenance period through following modules: Real Time Performance Monitoring, Model-Based Diagnostics, Performance Trend Analysis, Optimal Overhaul Maintenance Interval, Compressor Washing Period Management, and Blade Path Temperature Analysis. Model-Based Diagnostics module analyzed the differences between the data of gas turbine performance model and the online measurement. Compressor washing management module suggests the optimal point of balancing between the compressor performance and the maintenance cost.

  • In the electric power plant, the shaft vibration is one of the very important point for successful long-term operation, because the high reliability unit needs stable rotor dynamic system. However, in the one combined cycle power plant, the abnormal high level shaft vibration analyzed 1 X on the journal bearing has been several times suddenly tripped of Gas turbine due to the accumulated oil carbide. This paper describes how to countermeasure the abnormal shaft vibration in the journal bearing of Gas turbine exhaust bearing in the field.

  • This paper presents a method for improvement of communication speed and reduction of data storage space in gas turbine monitoring system to acquire, save, and display combustion vibration data. The proposed method implements FFT from sampled raw data. The FFT result data are encoded to be transferred to monitoring PC for storage. By this way, it can reduce data storage space. To display the received data, it needs inverse FFT to reconstruct original signal. To verify the validity and efficiency of the proposed scheme, computer-aided simulation are carried out. It includes the analyzed results the relationship between FFT's order and Gibb's Phenomenon. Finally, high-performance of the proposed method is proved by combustion experiment results using a prototype gas turbine.

  • To improve efficiency and allowable life of gas turbine and ram jet, the proper cooling techniques are needed. It is required not only the basic research of variable cooling techniques but also analysis of real operating conditions when we design the cooling system. From the present experimental and analytical results, we can predict the thermal stress and allowable life. This design process is for a thermal design technique that is the most foundational design technique to improve the efficiency of gas turbines and ram jets

  • This test cell is developed to provide the fundamentals of operational mechanism and structural configuration, and further to verify thermodynamic calculation with this test data to the institutes or laboratories research and study gas turbine engine for academic purpose. The test cell is installed to monitor and collect real-time data as to temperature, pressure, thrust, fuel flow, and air flow etc. using by NI DAQ(Data acquisition)device and LabVIEW program based on 30lbf-micro turbojet engine.
