Evaluation of Plasticizer Pollution Levels in Mudflat Solar Salt, Salt Water, and Sea Water of Nationwide Saltpan (국내 염전에서 생산된 갯벌천일염, 함수 및 해수의 가소제(DEHP) 오염 수준 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate plasticizer pollution levels in mudflat solar salt, salt water and sea water of the nationwide saltpan. Also, it was analyzed the relationship between DEHP in solar salt and PVC mat following private period. DEP (ranging from 0.00 to 1.55 ppb), DIBP (0.00~2.38), DBP (0.00~4.90), DEHA (0.00~2.32), and BBP (0.00~1.45) in solar salt were shown a extremely low concentrations, and DEHP was present a concentrations ranging from 0.00 to 268.5 ppb in solar salt. Further, DMP, DPrP, DNPP, DNHP, and DCHP were not detected in all solar salt. Phthalate in sea water and salt water was present a infinitesimal amount levels. DEHP levels in sea water and salt water were not shown a high risk levels ranging from 0.00 to 3.4 ppb, and from 0.00 to 21.4 ppb, respectively. As expected in PVC mat of nationwide saltpan, the correlation between DEHP in solar salt and PVC mat private period showed a low positive correlation coefficient ($r^2$=0.0362).

Physical and Mineralogical Properties of Pottery-Making Soils in Korea (국내 도자기용 태토의 토질 및 광물 특성)

  • Although the use of pottery-making soils has a long history, its use in the pottery industry requires that physical and geotechnical properties of the materials be established to define the suitability for various purposes. The main purpose of this study is to identify the different types of clays and mineral composition and to perform the geotechnical evaluation of the clays for making pottery products. Soils investigated in this study include raw materials used for making Baekja (white porcelains), Chungja (celadons), Buncheong, Sancheong, and Johyung. Pottery-making soils are manufactured by using different types of soils and sold by individual ceramic clay company. This study includes physical tests of soil and chemical analysis of major elements using XRF and XRD instrumentation. Grain size distributions, mineralogical composition, and a range of plasticities of soils for making different types of potteries are presented. Correlations between specific type of pottery clays and geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics are determined by comparing the test results. Since quantitative research using laboratory tests for pottery-making soils are rarely performed in Korea, further research should be done in the future to improve the Korean pottery industry.

Lead Ion-Selective Electrode Based on Upper-rim Calix[4]crown Ionophore (캘릭스[4]크라운 유도체를 이온선택성 물질로 사용한 납이온 선택성 막전극)

  • A PVC membrane electrode based on upper-rim calix[4] crown as ionophore was prepared using dioctyl sebacate (DOS) as a plasticizer. The potential response of this membrane electrode to alkali, alka-line earth and transitionmetal metal cations were examined. This membrane electrode exhibited a Nernstian response to $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-2}M\;Pb(NO_3)_2$ with a slope ot 27.0 mV/decade. Its response time ($t_{90}$) was 10s and it could be used for at least 2 months. Also, the potential was maintained constantly in the rage of ph $2.0{\sim}12$.

  • Acidic drug selective electrodes based on metal(II)-di-2-pyridyl ketone-acidic drugs ternary complex as electroactive material were prepared. The metal ions, $Fe^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ were used. Nitrophenyl ether series were used as plasticizers. The electrodes exhibit a fast stable and linear response for $5{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-3}mol/L$ mefenamic acid (MA) in borate buffer solution (pH 8.9) and ibuprofen(Ib) in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0). The recovery test for mefenamic acid and ibuprofen using standard addition method were 99.0% and 98.4% with relative standard deviation of 2.4% and 2.6% respectively.

The $Pb^{2+}$ Ion Affinitive Membrane Electrode Based on New Calix[4]arene Ionophore (새로운 캘릭스[4]아렌 유도체를 이용한 $Pb^{2+}$ 이온 친화성 막전극)

  • The ion selective membrane electrode made of calix[4]arene-based host 1 as ionophore, poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) as matrix and dioctylsebacate (DOS) as a plasticizer was studied. The potential responses of this membrane electrode to alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal cations were investigated. Especially this membrane electrode was turned out to be affinitive for $Pb^{2+}$ in the deionized water. It was observed that the response was linear in the concentration range from $1.0 \times 10^{-1} M to 1.0 \times 10^{-6} M of Pb^{2+}$ and its slope (26.5 mV/decade) was near to the sub-Nernstian response in deionized water. Also, the potential was maintained constantly in the range of pH $4.00 \sim 12.00$, which supports the potential usage as $Pb^{2+}$ affinitive electrode in the deionized water.

Effects of Extracting Conditions on the Physical Properties of Fish Meal Protein Isolate Film (어분단백질 필름의 물리적 특성에 미치는 어분단백질 추출조건의 영향)

  • To determine optimal conditions for preparing protein isolate film from fish meal, the water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile properties and solubility of fish meal proteinisolate (FMPI) film were measured. FMPI was extracted from fish meal under conditions of various extraction times at $60^{\circ}C$. Extracting time little affected to WVP of FMPI film. The film added with glycerol as plasticizer showed higher WVP than sorbitol added. As extraction time increased up to 1 hr, tensile strength and elongation were increased. While in more extracting time than 1 hr, increasing extracting time made tensile strength and elongation showed negative correlations. The correlation of soluble protein amount and tensile strength showed higher value ($r^{2}=0.83$) than that of elongation ($r^{2}=0.62$).

  • A new functional organic thin film optical waveguide ion sensor is designed, which can select a specific ion, i.e., $Ca^{2+}$ -ion. The sensing membrane was composed of PVC-PVAC-PVA copolymer matrix based on anionic cation-selective chromoionophor(ETH5294), neutral ionophore(K23El), anionic site and plasticizer and it was coated on the etched glass substrate as embeded type optical waveguide itself. The sensor sensitivity dependence on waveguide length and thickness, contence of chromoionophore, and each mode was investigated. And this sensor could detect $Ca^{2+}$ ion in concentrations ranging from 1$\times$10­6~1M(with 0.05M tris-HCI buffer solution of pH7.4) by measuring the absorbance change at 514nm of light. Utilizing thin film membrane, the fast response time and high sensitivity are obtained. Also, it is expected that this sensor can be applied to various biochemical important ions.ons.

  • The adhesion behaviors and processability of NBR as a sealing material were investigated. In order to find the optimum formulation, the adhesive properties and processability were observed as the change of the contents of acrylonitrile (ACN) in NBR. Effects of Mooney viscosity, filler, plasticizer and crosslinking agent on the adhesion behaviors were also studied. The contents of ACN in NBR have great effects on adhesion behaviors and processability in NBR sealing. To know the optimum condition of roll mixing, degree of dispersion was investigated. It was confirmed that degree of dispersion was influenced by various factors such as mixing order, time, and temperature. The crosslinking system was studied as the observation of sulfur system, peroxide system, crosslinking density, and structure. From the variation of the dry condition and hexamine contents, the relation between adhesive and NBR was studied. These results show the adhesion properties and processability are dependent on the contents of ACN and crosslinking system.

Effect of Water Resistance and Physical Properties of Soy Protein Isolate coated Liner Board (대두단백 코팅 종이의 수분저항성 및 물리적 성질)

  • To improve the water resistance and physical properties of soy protein isolate (SPI)-coated paper, effects of concentrations of soy protein isolate and plasticizer were examined. Physical properties such as elongation strength (ES), elongation rate (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) were evaluated. The film made from 5% soy protein isolate (SPI) and 40% glycerol (plasticizer) suggested a good application for a film preparation. SPI coated paper showed the highest ES (21.62 MPa) and the lowest WVP $(2.06ng{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa)$ and WS (1.17%). This study suggested that soy protein isolate (SPI) can be used as a coating material for the coated paper to improve the water resistance.

Effects of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(DEHP) on plant soil-borne pathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium carotovorum in vitro (Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate가 in vitro에서 식물 토양병원성 세균 Pectobacterium carotovorum에 미치는 영향)

  • Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the plasticizers used in the polyvinyl chloride(PVC) industry. It is known to be easily released into the environment. In this study, we investigated effects of DEHP on growth, metabolic pathway, and virulence gene expression in soil-borne bacterial plant pathogen, Pectobacterium carotovorum SCC1 using in vitro assays. As a result, DEHP at 20 ㎍ mL-1 did not affect the growth, cell membrane permeability, or ATPase activity of P. carotovorum SCC1. However, it decreased succinyl-CoA synthase (SCS) activity in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Relative expression levels of virulence genes encoding pectate lyase and pectin were differentially influenced by DEHP treatment. These results suggest that biological characteristics of P. carotovorum might be influenced by DEHP in soil.
