Computer Simulation of Rubber Flow for Mold Profile in Rubber Shaping Process (고무 성형 공정에서 금형 형상에 따른 고무 흐름의 컴퓨터 모사)

  • The tire tread is contacted with road surface directly. It gives significant effect on the breaking conditions, traction, noise and so on. The tread having grooves with complex geometry is molded by shaping process. The flow behavior of tread rubber in a mold affects the quality of the tread and it leads to the running performance of automobile. In this study, the flow behavior of rubber in shaping process has been investigated by computer simulation. The objective of flow simulation is the design of tread shape based on the contact of rubber on the mold surface and flow behavior of rubber. Different sequences of contact of rubber on the mold surface and flow behavior of rubber are observed according to the shape of tread on the mold surface. It was verified that the shape of tread gives significant effect on the flow behavior of rubber. Different flow behaviors of rubber and sequential contact of rubber to the mold surface were observed according to the shape of tread on the mold surface. Therefore, we have identified that the shape of tread give a change in the flow behavior of rubber.

  • Automobile tire has very complicated shape and is composed of rubber, steel cord and ply cord, Tread pattern of tire is very essential for the basic characteristics of tire, such as braking, acceleration and comfortableness. Tire components such as tread, sidewall, and spex are prepared by forcing uncured rubber compound through an extruder to shape during curing process. Because of its complexity of shape, adaptive mesh refinement was used for the analysis of tire tread. Effects of forming variables were evaluated.

Analysis of Installation Environment and Fire Risk of Induction Motors Installed in the Curing Process of a Rubber Product Manufacturing Plant (고무제품제조공장의 가류공정에 설치된 유도전동기의 설치환경 및 화재위험성 분석)

  • This study analyzed the fire status of a rubber product manufacturing factory based on 19 years of fire data. Through the analysis of the current state of fire, electrical fires accounted for 58.19%, and among electrical fires, motor fires were the highest at 26.21%. For the motor fire occurrence process, the curing process accounted for the highest rate of 51.9%. Therefore, the installation environment was investigated for the motor in the curing process, and it was confirmed that the motor's maximum ambient temperature exceeded 40℃. In particular, in the case of the motor for curing operation, the motor was installed in a separate motor room, so the average indoor temperature was 48.10℃ and the motor frame's maximum temperature was 72.80℃. In this study, the risk of motor fire was confirmed through a field survey, and a safety management plan was derived by finding a process with high fire risk and conducting an experiment on the motor's installation environment and electrical characteristics in that process.

  • Thermosetting elastomer such as EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Dien Rubber) has been applied to the sponge weatherstrip of a vehicle as a main material. However, the thermosetting elastomers have limited recycling and have brought about the environmental problems. Furthermore, many steps of the manufacturing process such as formulation, mastication and vulcanization make difficult to control uniformity of the endproducts. These problems of current EPDM weatherstrip necessitated development of a new recyclable material, Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPV). In this study the influence of the water contents, and the processing conditions. On the foam density and structure in water blowing process was carried out. We found that TPV also can be foamed with water, maintaining the uniformity form this study. Therefore, many inevitable problems of EPDM weatherstrip can be solved, and this new technique is expected to take a roll of making a breakthrough in the rubber industry.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cure type on the processing and physical properties under conditions of similar stress-strain properties. On the carbon black filled natural rubber(NR) based compound, the induction time decreased, but the cure rate became fast with increasing loading of sulfur donor agent. Improvement of hot work environment in the curing processes of a tire manufacturing company (타이어 제조공장 가류공정의 온열환경 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Generally, the tire curing process is the process in which the sulfur is added and subsequently the tire is heated to give the tire elasticity. In this process, all kinds of the chemicals in the tire are emitted with a lot of heat. The chemical fume and heat aggravate the work environment. To solve this problem, 92 local exhaust ventilators and 8 gravity ventilators were used, but not satisfactory yet. Preliminary survey showed that the temperatures in the process were very high: 30.3, 32.9 and $37.2^{\circ}C$ at 2, 4 and 6m above the ground level, respectively in the winter (outside temperature was $2^{\circ}C$). It can be imagined that the process is severely hot in the summer time. The higher temperature distribution in the higher space tells us that the hot plume could not be removed with the existing ventilation systems. Therefore, in this study, some alternative ventilation systems were designed. The partitions were used to contain the hot plume to increase the capture efficiency. The gravity ventilators were newly designed to improve the extraction efficiency of hot fume. To satisfy the balance of pressure in the curing process, some supply air system was introduced by renewing the existing air conditioning system. Many alternative solutions were evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics modelling. The best and applicable solution was selected and the existing ventilation system was modified. After implementing the new ventilation system, the hot environment was much improved. The temperature reduction in the curing process was about $6.4^{\circ}C$.

Optimum design of injection mold heater for uniform curing of LSR seal for waterproof connector (방수 커넥터용 LSR Seal의 균일 경화를 위한 사출 금형 히터의 최적 설계)

  • Automotive waterproof connectors are highly functional parts that must be air-tight in a complex environment. In the LSR multi-cavity injection molding process for manufacturing waterproof connectors, it is important to maintain a uniform curing temperature between the cavities in order to obtain a quality product. For this purpose, we designed the capacity of the cartridge heater differently for each position, and then linked the heat transfer analysis and optimization module to obtain the optimal cartridge heater capacity. As a result of the optimization analysis, the temperature deviation between cavities was decreased from $13.1^{\circ}C$ to $8.1^{\circ}C$ compared with the case in which constant heater capacity was applied, so that the design criterion could be satisfied within a temperature deviation of $10^{\circ}C$ for uniform curing. This study suggests that this method can be applied efficiently to the design of a large area multi-cavity LSR mold heater.
