  • This study tried to prove why a low-rise residential block is more vitalized than in a superblock consisted of an apartment housing complex. To do this, two adjacent superblocks in Yeoksam 2-dong were selected as a case study among superblocks of residential area in Gangnam, Seoul. It adopted the concept of 'complexity', 'Osmosis', 'Vitality' and 'Permeability' for evaluation indexes to measure street vitality. As a result, four indexes were clearly higher in low-density residential superblocks than apartment housing complex superblocks. First, the superblocks for apartment housing complexes showed a lower 'complexity' because large-scale parcels for an apartment housing complex reduces a possibility for various land uses. Second, smaller blocks improved "osmosis" compared to larger blocks, and the larger the block, the less likely it is that buildings and streets penetrate activity. Third, as the apartment complex block became larger, the number of accesses decreased. Thus, it did not provide vitality to the streets. Fourth, high permeability was shown in the low-density superblocks, while that of the superblock consisted of apartment housing complexes was very low because the entrance of the complexes entrance is closed to the public. The results of this study demonstrated that an apartment housing complex may hamper street vitality and deteriorate the quality of urban environments.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the character of concerned local area through using roadside space that is space for daily experience of citizen as target, extracting symbolic image reconsidering the historical and cultural character and clarifying the local identity on the basis of it. Through applying image of local symbolism and future-oriented roadside to street furniture, I tried to express local symbolism and through composing symbolic roadside of local that can be newly recognized as unique street, I tried to give a local symbolism and compose active roadside environment. Through providing basic material and actual design example, this paper tried to activate characterized local culture. As the method to approach design of symbolic roadside, the researcher divided local symbolic image into present local image and future-oriented image through selecting the roadside that historical element is lost and urbanization is achieved as target. The researcher characterized local roadside, using street furniture as symbolic tool of future-oriented roadside on the basis of symbolic image extracted from image evaluation testing. • The policy introduced recently in order to promote small-size reconstruction housing projects for rehabilitating downtown area consists of aged multi houses has been little practiced, as preferential provisions for such projects are more likely applicable for large projects. Several expert interviews and surveys were conducted to find efficient clauses to overcome the problems and their relative weights. As the results, it is revealed that 'relation of floor area ratio' and 'relaxation of building height limit criteria' are the most effective whereas 'purchasing and operating of residents' common facilities with public fund' is little. The study results would be a great interests for public institutions to rebuild aged housing area without destroying local communities and to provide socially disadvantaged class with rental housing at the same time.

  • This study analyzes the Pattern Language of Insadong-gil in street environmental design analysis for street vitalization. The urban public spaces, such as pedestrian streets, parks and plazas, have been increased with rapid urbanization and industrialization. But the fact is the satisfied spaces with the behavior patterns of users is little. This is because of the too much slanted thought toward formal supply and management of spaces without enough consideration for people and spatial quality of public spaces. The purpose of this study is to find out the factors to make the street more vital and diverse and to give the characteristic of region through the research on Insadong street with the pattern language of Christopher Alexander. So, throughout the value recognition of the changing urban street environment that has been changed by age selected spatial characteristic of public spaces. By selecting a suitable pattern language for each spatial characteristics provide the basis for street environmental design analysis. For this study, look at the relationship between pattern language focused on Insadong street, pattern language as the vitalization factor of street were analyzed 16 elements, including Pedestrian Street(100), Building Fronts(122), Activity Nodes(30) etc. This study focuses on street environmental design analysis of Insadong-gil through the Pattern Language, it propose the criteria and guidelines that will help enable street vitalization.

  • The planting pattern of Seoul street tree could be divided into six patterns, that was, one row, double row, median strip type and bicycle road type. The protection facilities of installed street tree was inadequate, because it was so small and weak. Recently, the growth rate of street tree in Seoul was decreasing because of air pollution. Strong alkali soil proved to be inappropriate for the growth of street tree. Soil hardness of treepit equipped with treegrill was lower than unequipped one. From the analysis of correlation between the growth environments of street tree, we could conclude that the vitality of street tree are proportioned to the distance from the center of Seoul. The way of improvement for physiological growth and increase of street tree were as follows; establishment reform of street facilities, the installation of protection equipment, continuous and systematic management.

  • Urban nature plays an important role not only in the improvement of the physical environment but also from the perspective of psychological and social function. In particular, schoolyards as well as the green spaces near school surroundings function as a primary space for urban children to experience nature in Korea, as they spend most of their time at school. In this study, the status of urban green spaces near school surroundings was examined. For the analysis, 185 elementary schools in Seoul were selected and the green spaces within a radius of 300m(defined as 'school zone' in this study) were analyzed using the Rapid Eye multispectral satellite image data. The mean green space ratio of school zone accounts to about 21% with a high variation from 74% to 0.7% and more than half of the school zone have a green space ratio of less than 20%. Schools with a high green space ratio in their school zone are mostly located near urban forests, so forest areas particularly contribute to increase the green space ratio. Furthermore, forest vegetation shows relatively higher vitality than other green spaces located in urbanized areas. In contrast, schools with a low green space ratio in their school zone are mostly situated in high-density residential areas and the green spaces show relatively low vegetation vitality. Except for the urban forest, the majority of urban green spaces in urbanized areas are landscape green facilities in apartment districts. The other types of urban open spaces such as environmentally shaped schoolyards or street parks account only for a very small proportion of school surroundings. Therefore, it is needed to establish countermeasures in the context of urban planning; e.g. to promote the school forest projects preferentially by selecting schools with a extremely low green space ratio in their school zone, to foster roof greening in near surroundings, and to connect schoolyards organically with nearby apartment landscape green facilities as an easily accessible urban open space.
