A Study on the Infant Furniture as Infant Playing Behavior (놀이 형태에 따른 미취학 아동용 가구에 관한 연구)

  • The environment is very important to the human being, most of all, infant is sensitive to the environment because infant is on the way to the brought-up. The Furniture in living space is a medium to connect a house and dweller, and is intimately relate to the living environment. Therefore we have to consider the infant various behavior for the plan of infant furniture. But studies on the infant seems not to have concern of infant environment as a living. Specialty, the demands of the adults for space is up to express in living space, but that of infant is latent. Also the demands of infant is difficult for the adults to be understood. So the studies on the infant furniture through the Infant playing behavior have to be achieved for the proper infant cultural environment.

  • Because the use of furniture have changed importantly, the relationship between general classroom in primary school and using furniture has got more important than before. There are two distinctive in furniture of general classroom. One is the improving the quality of education environment, and another is the improving the effect of studying. Therefore, the goal of this study is to change the function of general classroom for goal of these two characteristic. Through this study, the goal of this study make a future vision of better furniture design of general classroom.

  • The concept of humanity is considered as the common issue of various areas in the $21^{st}$ century. The diverse issues such as social design, social enterprise, and ethical consumption, etc., actually involves in the humanity. The unique aspect is that they focus on the disadvantaged group and want to do something for their severe situation in spite of the economic recession all the world faced. This paper shows how the social design appeared as a paradigm of the $21^{st}$ century design on the historical consideration, and tries to prove that the social design is not a new trend but the subtle movement that begun from $19^{th}$ century.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the advanced plans to get the activation of the domestic furniture manufacture, considering the conditions of the furniture market and business environments before and after IMF Economic Crisis. These are necessary to get over some problems which result in reduction of demand, consumption, and investment under the recession. The furniture manufacture should take the occasion as a pertinent opportunity to strengthen the competitive edge and step up the exploration of the international markets. It is reasonable to conclude that the advanced plans should be designed, implemented, and expanded through the inducement of the government, manufacturers, and foreign investors.

  • Compared to the fields of Interior Design and Architecture, there have been very few research studies peformed to analyze the history of furniture design in Korea. If our Country wishes to become a participant in the world of global furniture design, it will be necessary to perform more offensive research in both the design of furniture, as well as a complete documentation of our Country's history of furniture design. This study aims to detail the method of chair design by analyzing two examples of chair design. The study, once complete, will be a reference for furniture designers as a practical method, and will become basic material for ongoing studies of the Programming for chair design.

A Study on Design Features of 'Nendo' Furniture ('넨도' 가구의 디자인 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Nendo, which was established in Tokyo in 2002, is a design company established by Oki Sato, which is gaining reputation as a new design group representing Japan through numerous design tasks encompassing diverse design sectors, such as architecture, interior, furniture, graphic, and products. This study was conducted to investigate the formative features of Nendo furniture by reviewing 133 pieces of Nendo furniture designed for the last ten years and identify the general characteristics of Nendo furniture by reviewing the time of launch, product launch type, and furniture type. As a result, the design features of Nendo furniture are as follows: First, the shapes of basic materials including boards, lumber, and bars are maintained intact and Nendo furniture has simple and moderate design without complicated or decorative elements. Second, Nendo furniture has simply embodied a design characterized by simple transformation, minimization of furniture elements, and rearrangement. Third, Nendo presents new and simple furniture differentiated from other pieces of furniture using optical illusions. Such expressions of optical illusions which are hardly found in preexisting furniture are a major feature of Nendo furniture. Fourth, a majority of chairs of Nendo cause optical illusions with the minimized size. In addition, their top boards made of transparent glass and mirror cause optical illusions with the properties of materials. In short, design of Nendo furniture is characterized by formative expressions, expressions of optical illusions, and differentiated use of materials. Fifth, Nendo keeps launching new furniture items in various exhibitions. As a result, Nendo makes furniture with its own unique characteristics based on its diverse studies and experiments which are applied to furniture design in a realistic way. In summary, design of Nendo furniture is characterized by simply embodied design based on small differences in daily life, minimalism with simple and moderate shapes, and its own witty uniqueness based on formative expressions, expressions of optical illusions, and use of materials differentiated from other furniture brands.

A Study on Comparing Characteristics of Frank Loyd Wright's Furniture Design with Charles Rennie Mackintosh (프랭크 로이드 라이트와 찰스 레니 맥킨토시의 가구디자인 비교 연구)

  • There is a commonality between Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in that they created the new patterns of geometric Art Nouveau from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This study compares the furniture of Wright and Mackintosh who had significant impacts on the development of modern design for each of the periods divided by their design feature to find the individualities and similarities of their design. It is an analytical approach with an accurate understanding of the design trends of the Art Nouveau era. The results of the furniture comparison are as follows: The finding is that Wright and Mackintosh designed creative furniture in harmony with a specific indoor space, Organic design was well expressed through the selection and use of wooden materials, Based on the understanding of tree characteristics, they did not use detailed decorations, but designed the simple and rigorous forms of furniture with highlighted interest in geometry. As for shape, Wright's furniture in his early days tend to be look largely formal and heavy. Since his debut in Japan in 1905, the furniture design became very sophisticated. On the other hand, Mackintosh's chairs are characterized by plenty of geometric patterns and long back. In many cases, his chairs were designed as part of formative elements in space, not for the purpose of furniture itself. As for materials and colors, Wright used mainly cherry wood. And he also utilized metals colored in olive green, red-brown and others for office furniture. The frames, fabrics and leather used for most of the furniture have natural colors, which are harmonious with spaces. Meantime, Mackintosh used primarily oak and ash trees. He used seat cushions and various colors to make the design of furniture have a sophisticated and simple image. The materials used for seat panel are horsehair, rush, silk and leather. He applied these materials to the furniture by weaving or cutting them.

  • Furniture has been developed in pursuit of human convenience and comfort, but nowadays it does not consider human users and gradually loses the essence of furniture. Especially furniture design that disregards the relation with space loses both the meaning and purpose of furniture. In this regards, it is necessary to understand the essence of furniture design and establish a design direction for future progress. Based on the relation between furniture and space, this paper intended to study on John Pawson's works that pursued the essence of design focusing on users, and propose a direction in a sense of real meaning for modern furniture design after exploring the characteristic of the furniture design of John Pawson. The study method of this paper was to investigate the design language of John Pawson and analyze his furniture in the morphological structural, functional, and material aspects. Based on such analysis, this study investigated the characteristics of the furniture design and found out what the core of the design that he pursued was. The scope of the study included the Independent Furniture that was restricted furniture collections of Driade and Spatial Furniture designed and installed at the stage of space construction. The study result showed that the design of John Pawson considered 'the suitability to a specific place' as important factor and furniture was planned at the stage of planning space. Each independent furniture defines all spaces in the morphological, lay-out and functional aspects of furniture and emphasizes their own property. As Spatial Furniture shares the function of spatial composition element, Pawson's furniture can be all called Spatial Furniture.

  • Since the late 20th century, digital technology has changed our environment in many ways. The representative advanced homes today embed digital facilities such as a sensor infrastructure, a networking system, and ubiquitous display. In this point of view, this study was intended to define the apartment residents' diverse needs for digital home design. The subjects are 400 wives who live in Busan. The findings are as follows; (1) The factors of the housing activities are extracted as 'guest hosting,' 'family entertaining,' 'digital network,' 'daily domestic affair,' 'non-daily domestic affair,' 'media using,' and 'bathing & exercising' activities. (2) The 'digital network activities' occurred more frequently in the households with non-employed wife and preschool children, and with employed wife and preschool and elementary school children. (3) The factors of the digital home system were extracted as 'safety & maintenance,' 'health & convenience,' 'educational & housekeeping,' and 'cultural & entertaining' systems. (4) The needs of non-employed wives for the safety & maintenance and the educational & housekeeping systems are varied by family life cycle and wife age. While, the needs of employed wives for the educational & housekeeping and the culture & entertaining systems are varied by dwelling-size and wife age.

  • Concept based Design-Art is a flow formed while focusing on works not dividing boundaries with concept on top in a transition to content-centered communication methods from medium-centered communication methods so far dividing design genres. This movement begins in a try to create upper-level concepts before works and products come into being in pure art and design respectively. This thesis draws out the definition of Concept based Design-Art through its researches, diagnoses directionality of Concept based Design-Art by analyzing Concept based Design-Artists' works and considers their social duties and roles. Outcome of this study will help working authors, designers, and Design-Artists grasp the changing phases of design and art, establish their own directionality, and predict how the Concept based Design-Art market will change in the years ahead. Besides, it will be a good reference by which for them to build their own 'concept,' consider their relationship to the society and check where they are.
