  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of social support on material hardship of low-income elderly people that have been excluded from the National Basic Livelihood Security System. For this research, data of 255 persons aged 65 and over were collected using a survey conducted in 2014 by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea on the minimum living cost of low-income household. Data analysis was performed through descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis with STATA13. According to the results, the average level of material hardship in low-income elderly people was 1.45 out of 6, with the most hardship shown in heating and health care. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that when low-income elderly people became excluded from the system, they suffered more than the recipients. They also showed that the social support system of low-income elderly people brought a negative impact on their material hardship when they were connected by the strong social support system. In other words, social support system reduced their material hardship caused by exclusion. Based on the results, this study suggests some practical and political means to reduce material hardship of low-income elderly people.

  • This study aimed at specifically validating the mediating effect of the elderly's leisure participation with regards to the impact of socio-economic factors on the elderly's satisfaction with life. This paper analyzed the data of 7,486 people who participated in the 4th research of the 2012 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSa) by Korea Labor Institute. The outcome is as follows. First, among socio-economic factors, educational background, total household income and net asset were found to have positive impact on the elderly's satisfaction with life. When the level of the three factors was higher, the satisfaction with life was also greater. Second, the three socio-economic factors (educational background, total household income and net asset) affected the elderly's satisfaction with life through mediating effect of leisure participation. Those with higher educational background, total household income and net asset showed more leisure participation, leading to greater satisfaction with life.

  • This study examined how the differences in household characteristics influence consumer expenditure patterns. The Price-Scaling AIDS model with household income and expenditure survey data were used for the analysis. The results showed that the income elasticity of the service items is greater than non-service items, indicating an increase in higher demand of service items with the same increase in household income. The household expenditure patterns vary according to the commodities, holding age and income level. The so-called traditional pattern, which emphasizes spending for non-service items, changed to the one with a higher expenditure ratio for service items. Such a change in household expenditure patterns naturally derives the expansion of the relevant service market; hence, the growth of the related service industry. This highlights the need to formulate an appropriate response from the supply side that deals with the changes in the service market.

  • Using 1998~2003 data of the Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey, we analyze the scale, characteristics, and dynamic transition of working poors. The result shows that more than half of the poor families are working poors and that a considerable portion of economically active households is in poverty. However, compare to other kinds of poor families, working poors can easily escape from poverty once after they entered into poverty. When household head is elderly and less educated, the risk of working poor is relatively high. Also, self-employed households have high risk of working poor compare to households having wage worker(s). To ease the problem of working poor, creation of decent jobs and human resource development for vulnerable groups are important. Especially, the creation of decent jobs will do critical roles not only in solving employment issues but also in moderating income inequality among families. Policy development for self-employed in the brink of poverty and establishment of a solid social security system for working poors are also recommended.

The household income and expenditure data in Korea were extracted from 2018 to 2021. The household was categorized by generations such as gen Z, gen M, gen X, Baby Boomer, and Silent generation, and the household income status was identified by the income quintile. The outcome revealed that the ratio of fashion usage expenditure to income decreased following COVID-19 equated to before COVID-19 and revealed the significant differences by income quintile. • Single-person households recently have been rapidly increasing and one reason may be the increment in elderly single-person. Since the change of living patterns is relevant to the government policy direction, it is important to understand how single-person households are clustered and which factors have influence on them. In this study, we tried to detect spatial clusters of single-person households and low-income elderly single-person households after adjusting for deprivation index. A recently developed fused lasso for Poisson data was used for data analysis and we provided the details on how to use it in R. From these analysis results, we observed the effect of socioeconomic level on the clusters and explained the reason why spatial clusters are shown after adjusting for deprivation index.

  • This study focuses on the problem of feminization of poverty that is formed within family relations. In order to approach this question, this study analyses the process of becoming poor through the life stories of ten woman are now heads of a household. There are differences among the study participants in the process of becoming a member of a low-income class. I have classified them into two groups depending on the routes they are led into the low-income class; one is the continuation of poverty group, and the other is the new members of the low-income class group. The continuation of poverty group is the case where they have been poor since their childhood and are still poor in their adulthood. The new members of the low-income class group is the case where you have become a low-income class sometime around divorce. The difference of the groups are related to the differences of the ways the power relationships work within a family. Women head of a household are prone to poverty because of the discrimination in formation, distribution and control of resources in their original family and their family formed by marriage. The norm of male breadwinner worked as a discrimination device. But this kind of discrimination device showed differences in their workings according to class. The continuation of poverty group experienced exclusion in the gendered responsibility of supporting the family and maintaining the family, whereas the other group experienced exclusion through the gendered nature of the distribution and control of resources. By showing that the presupposition of discussions on the poverty of woman head of a household is false, these findings challenge the existing view that as long as 'The Family' is maintained women will not be poor.
