  • The purpose of this study was to examine the self-rated oral health status and oral health concern of 6,094 adults over the age of 19, which were both related to subjective oral health awareness, based on the second-year (2008) raw data of the 4th National Health and Nutrition Survey. 1. As for subjective oral health awareness, 49.4 percent replied they were in bad oral health when they were asked about self-rated oral health status. Regarding oral health concern, 62.6 percent answered they were sort of concerned about oral health. 2. As to oral health indexes by sociodemographic characteristics, there were statistically significant differences in oral health indexes according to gender, age, academic credential, monthly mean household income, frequency of eating between meals and toothbrushing frequency. Smoking made no statistically significant differences to oral health indexes (p<0.000). 3. Concerning self-rated oral health status by sociodemographic characteristics, no significant differences were found according to gender, age and academic credential, and there were statistically significant differences according to monthly mean household income and smoking (p<0.000), frequency of eating between meals (p<0.018), toothbrushing frequency (p<0.003). 4. In relation to oral health concern by sociodemographic characteristics, gender and smoking made no significant differences, and statistically significant differences were found according to age (p<0.003), academic credential, monthly mean household income, frequency of eating between meals and toothbrushing frequency (p<0.000). 5. In regard to the relationship between subjective oral health awareness and oral health indexes, none of the oral health indexes had a significant relationship to self-rated oral health status, and there were statistically significant differences in oral health concern according to functioning teeth index (p<0.011) and community periodontal index (p<0.017).

  • Using the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) from 2000 to 2008, we estimate the Frisch elasticity of labor supply. Our point estimates of the intensive margin elasticity are around 0.23. The estimates are not sensitive to changes in household income and assets as well as changes in workweek regulation during the sample period that workers shall work for 5 days per week from Monday to Friday. We also estimate the extensive margin elasticity by considering labor market participation. We find that the point estimates at the extensive margin are greater than those at the intensive margin, but not statistically significant.

  • This study aims to examine the level of precariousness among young adults in South Korea and analyze the factors affecting their subjective well-being by adopting the three forms of precariousness suggested by Rodgers(1989) such as lack of resource, uncertainty and disempowerment as its analytical framework. Structural Equation Model was used for analyzing the path model of self-rated health, income level and social support(three forms of resource) affecting subjective wellbeing through uncertainty and disempowerment. Study population include young adults aged between 19 to 34 with a sample size of 415 using data of the 8th wave of the Korean General Social Survey(KGSS), 2010. Study population is divided into lower-age group (aged between 19-26) and upper-age group (aged between 27-34) in order to examine the differences between age groups by using Multiple Group Analysis. Study results show that three forms of resources, uncertainty and disempowerment had direct effect on the subjective well-being of South Korean young adults and disempowerment had the most significant effect among the factors. In addition, self-rated health and income level had indirect effect on subjective well-being through both uncertainty and disempowerment while social support had indirect effect on subjective well-being only through disempowerment. Results from the Multiple Group Analysis indicate that among the two age groups, income level only has a significant effect on subjective well-being in the upper-age group. In addition, disempowerment had greater effect on subjective wellbeing among upper-age group than the lower-age group. Based on the study results, this paper suggested policy implications and discussion for further research.

  • This paper attempts to quantify the economic value of the recreational benefits from the Jangheung dam. To this end, the contingent valuation (CV) survey was administrated to a sample of randomly selected 1,000 households from the national population. We used single-bounded model as a method of eliciting the willingness to pay (WTP) and applied a spike model to deal with zero WTP responses (72.5%) from the CV survey. The respondents were asked to state whether to pay a given amount through additional higher income tax once a year for next ten years. The results show that the annual recreational benefits of the Jangheung dam are estimated to be 1,348 won per household, which is statistically significant at the 1% level. Expanding the value to the national population gives us 24.9 billion won per year.

  • This study aims to explore the status and characteristics of the working poor and to identify the major determinants of their statistic status. For this, longitudinal panel data (from 2nd wave(1999) data to 7th wave(2004) data) from Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), is used. The data is analyzed by adopting Hierarchical Generalized Linear Model (HGLM), which is known as an app.opriate data analysis method for the hierarchically structured data, to look at the factors that affect on the poverty status of the working people. The results show that 1) it is estimated that about 1 out of 10 working people (about 10.0%) are poor, and 2) sex, education level, marital status, region where they lives, employment status, occupation type, and industry type that they are working at are significant predictors in determining their poverty status. Unlike the results of the previous studies, however, the number of the household member, age are not influenced on their poverty status. Based on these results, several policy implications are presented at the end of this paper.

  • Background: This study aimed to identified the relationship between the risk of obstructive sleep apnea, subjective health, and health-related quality of life among the middle-aged and elderly population in Korea. Methods: Adults aged 40 or older were extracted from the total 22,559 respondents to the 2019-2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VIII, and secondary analysis was conducted on a total of 6,659 middle-aged and elderly people with no missing values. Logistic regression analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted to examine the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea risk factors and subjective health as well as quality of life. Results: The subjective health status decline in the high-risk group compared to the non-risk group for obstructive sleep apnea was statistically significantly higher, with an odds ratio of 1.84 (p<0.001). The health-related quality of life was also statistically significantly lower by 0.02 points (β, -0.02; p<0.001). As a result of subgroup analysis on specific variables, the association between the risk of obstructive sleep apnea and subjective health and health-related quality of life was statistically significant depending on gender, sleep time, presence of depression, household income, and number of household members. Based on the obstructive sleep apnea risk group, women had a higher correlation with low subjective health and lower health-related quality of life scores than men. Sleeping time of more than 8 hours or less than 6 hours was more associated with low subjective health and lower health-related quality of life score than sleeping time of 6-8 hours. Patients with depression were more likely to have low subjective health than those without depression. The lower the household income level and the smaller the number of household members, the higher the association with low subjective health and the lower the health-related quality of life score. Conclusion: It is essential to recognize that the risk of obstructive sleep apnea not only directly affects sleep disorders but also impacts individuals' subjective health and quality of life. Consequently, social support and education should be provided to raise awareness of this issue. Particularly, programs for preventing and managing obstructive sleep apnea should target vulnerable groups such as women, individuals in single-person households, low household income, and those with depression, aiming to improve their subjective health and quality of life.

  • This research explores different non-work trip characteristics between the elderly group (65+) and the working age group (20-64) using heteroscadastic ordered logit model. The analysis is based on travel survey data of Seoul Metropolitan area in 2006. The results show that age induces heteroscadasticity and the model provides a better fit than ordered logit model. The factors increasing the number of non-work trip of the elderly were driver's license and household income. Conversely, the number of non-work trips decreased in those groups that were male, with a job, in aging, and with the number of preschool children. The factors having opposite effects (increased the number of non-work trips in the working age groups and decreased in the elderly group) between the elderly group and working age group were age and job.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether "the feminization of poverty" is under process in Korea and what factors are key determinants of these trends. The Korean Labor and Income Panel Study from 1998 to 2005 is used and the sample includes all individuals who aged 18 or more. The results show that the feminization of poverty is still under process since 1998 and the economic status of females is getting worse compared to their counterparts. Regarding the causes of these trends, the level of education and type of employment are significant predictors for explaining the feminization of poverty in cross-sectional data analysis. In the longitudinal analysis, however, the number of persons in households and the number or working persons have significant influences on the feminization of poverty. It is urgently necessary to enact social policies preventing discriminations against females in the labor markets and to introduce social welfare benefits for females based on citizenship. In addition, the welfare benefits for the elderly are also necessary because their economic status is the worst among all age groups.

  • This study aims to examine how newly married couple's financial position influence the decision of divorce by using data from the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). In particular, we closely examine the period between marriage and divorce for the households married since 2000. As a measure of household financial position, we focus on hosing debts because it can be considered as one of the most important factors for newly married couples. The key findings are as follows. First of all, age for marriage, age gaps between husband and wife and education level have a vital influence on the decision of divorce. In addition, in general, the household debts have decisive and negative effects on the future divorce decision. Especially, not only high absolute amount of debt but also high relative debt to household total income bring about a decision of divorce. The findings of this study suggest that systematic debt relief policies for newly married couples would be needed to build healthy family.

  • The questionnaires about the safety of the urban gas have been carried out for the end users. about 8 of 10 persons said that the urban gas Is safe to use, whereas $35\%$ of them said there exists a hazard of an accident in thier residences. There cannot be found the clear evidences that the understandings on the safety of the urban gas have no relations to their ages, sex, and monthly incomes, while the safety is less confidential to the highly educated, the accident-experienced, or the mans who are poor at the safety inspections. Most of the questioned man know the inspection knacks for the gas utilities, but only $60\%$ of them carry out it. They said that they do not feel the necessity of the inspection because they are inspected routinely by the suppliers or the inspection companies. This says that the end user does not concern the safety inspections, and in order to improve the dependency of the user for the self-inspections, the inspection staff should educate the user for the necessity and the knack of inspections to encourage the self-inspection of the gas utilities.
