  • In this study, the reaction rate constant, activation energy, total crosslinking density, elastic constant, cure properties ($t_5,\;t_{90}$), modulus, and abrasion resistance of rubber compounds were investigated as a function of cure temperatures, cure systems and reinforcing filler loadings. Reaction rate constants showed strong dependence on thc carbon black loading, cure temperature and cure system, and increased sharply with increasing the reaction temperatures. The lowest activation energy was obtained in the efficient cure (EC) system which corresponds to the high level of sulfur to accelerator ratio, and the activation energy was decreased with decreasing the carbon black loadings. The change of carbon black loadings directly affects the modulus and abrasion resistance, but the change of cure system showed various effects on the rubber compounds. Increased carbon black loadings showed the high modulus, improved abrasion resistance and short scorch time but decrease in crosslinking density and elastic constant. Higher crosslinking density and elastic constant were shown in the EC cure system regardless of carbon black loadings, but scorch timc ($t_5$) was not affected by the change of the ratio of sulfur to accelerator. Rapid optimum cure time ($t_{90}$) were showen in the EC cure system. Also, the equivalent cure curve coefficient of rubber compound was 0.96 for conventional cure (CC) system, and 0.94 for semi-efficient cure (SEC) and EC system regardless carbon black loadings. As regarding the abrasion resistance, wear volume showed the logarithmic increase for the loaded weight.

  • The effects of molecular weights and rheological properties of polypropylene (PP), on its foam structures in batch process were investigated. The effects of crosslinking process were also considered in this study. The rheological properties of polypropylene, such as storage modulus(G'), loss modulus(G"), zero shear viscosity($\eta_O$), and relaxation time($\lambda$), increased with the increase of molecular weights, and these increases in rheological properties directly affected the stability improvements of the PP foam. The increase of crosslinked PP's gel content stopped at the irradiation dose of 3.2 Mrad. The development of foam structures was more enhanced as the irradiation dose increased up to 3.2 Mrad. When the irradiation dose exceeded 3.2 Mrad, however, it negatively affected the structural development of the foam by diminishing gel contents of the foaming material, which resulted in instability of the foam structure.ture.

  • The optimum annealing conditions of corn starch slurry were studied for RS4 type resistant starch production by phosphorylated cross-linking. When a corn starch slurry was cross-linked by using phosphate salts (STMP/STPP mixture) in the presence of 0.9%, 1.2% and 1.5% NaOH/st.ds, a high concentration of NaOH resulted in a rapid increase of the RS contents at the early reaction stage. However, similar RS contents were obtained after 12 h of cross-linking regardless of NaOH concentrations. The annealing treatment was conducted under various conditions such as pH between 2-10, temperature $40-60^{\circ}C$, time 0-14 h followed by phosphorylated cross-linking. The lower slurry pH was for the annealing treatment, the higher RS contents were obtained after cross-linking. When the slurry annealed for various period of time and temperature, a maximal amount of RS was formed after 2 h of annealing at $50^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature of the starch slurry (pH 2.0). Therefore, an optimal annealing conditions at pH 2.0 and $50^{\circ}C$ for 2 h were proposed under the cross-linking conditions of sodium sulfate 10%/st.ds, NaOH 1.2%/st.ds and 12 h of the reaction time. The RS contents were linearly increased with the increase of phosphate salt addition. The RS4 prepared under the optimal conditions contained RS 72.3% and its phosphorus content was 0.36%/st.ds, which was below the limit (0.4%/st.ds) of modified starch by Korea Food Additives Code.

  • The solution polymerization was conducted to synthesize pressure sensitive adhesive for polarizer film using acrylic monomers. 2-Ethylhexylacrylate, butylacrylate, acrylic acid were used as acrylic monomers. The ratio was 2-ethylliexylacrylate:butylacrylate:acrylic acid=25:50:3.6 by reflecting $-40^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature in the pressure sensitive adhesive. When 1 wt% of coupling agent was added to the polymerized pressure sensitive adhesive, the light transmissivity was significantly increased. This result is due to the enhancement of adhesive power against liquid crystal cell by Si-O bond of coupling agents. Cross-linking agent was added by 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt% with respect to the synthesized polymer. Initial tackiness decreased, while cohesion increased with increasing crosslinking agent. In the analysis of contact angle, the increase of crosslinking agents yielded the enhancement of surface energy, resulting in the decrease of contact angle. From the measurement of heat resistance, the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive showed excellent heat resistance regardless of change in temperature and contents in crosslinking agent. In the observation of a cutting plane, the increased crosslinking agent represented a smoother and cleaner section. Comprehensively, the optimum additive amount of crosslinking agent was determined to be 1.0 wt% to monomer.

  • It has been tried to decrease the crosslink density of vulcanized EPDM (ethylone-propylene-diene terpolymer) rubber through a chemical devulcanization treatment. Phase transfer catalyst, alkali metal (i.e., sodium), and triphenylphosphine have been used as a chemical agent ul the devulcanization treatment. Also it has been estimated the effect of the devulcanization treatment in the case of utilization of 2-butanol as a devulcanization reaction solvent. In the devulcanization treatment using quaternary ammonium salt as a phase transfer catalyst. the devulcanization effect has been studied with the variation of catalyst molecular weight and the choice of bromide or chloride cation. In the devulcanization treatment using sodium, it has been estimated the devulcanization treatment effect depending upon the variation of reaction variables such as amount of sodium used, reaction temperature, pressure of hydrogen gas, which is used as a reaction environment. The $M_c$ value (number average molecular weight between two crosslink points) has been experimentally estimated by the equilibrium swelling method and it is quantitatively related to the crosslink density. The estimation of devulcanization effect for vulcanized EPDM rubber has been carried out by the comparison of the $M_c$ values between the untreated and the treated specimens.

  • Cotton fabric was treated with chitosan by pad-dry(-cure) method to impart antimicrobial properties. Four chitosans of different degree of deacetylation (DAC: 65~95%) with similar molecular weight(MW: ca. 50, 000) and one chitosan oligomer(MW 1, 800, DAC 86%) were used. In order to improve the durability to laundering of antimicrobial activity for the fabrics treated with chitosan oligomer, crosslinker or binder was included in the finishing formulation. Antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris was evaluated by the Shake Flask Method. The treated fabrics were laundered up to 20 times according to AATCC Test Method 60-1986 or JIS 0217-104 and antimicrobial activity of the laundered fabrics was evaluated. The antimicrobial activity was increased with the increase of concentration and degree of deacetylation of chitosan. And the cured fabrics showed better durability to laundering than the not-cured fabrics according to AATCC Test Method 60-1986. Crosslinker and binder decreased antimicrobial according of the fabrics treated with chitosan oligomer and were not effective to improve the durability to laundering according to JIS 0217-104. • Polyorganosiloxane having controlled cross-linking density and phenyl group content were prepared by dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS), methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS). The effect of cross-linking density and phenyl group content on the physical properties of siloxane resin and its coated film have been invetigated. Si-NMR results confirmed that synthesized siloxane resins have equivalent D $T^{Me}$ $T^{Ph}$ structures according to applied mole ratios of DMDMS, MTMS and PTMS. Polyorganosiloxane having higher cross-linking density with high phenyl content showed the high molecular weight and increasing phenyl content resulted in higher refractive index as well as better thermal stability. Cross-linking density is more important factor than phenyl content to obtain higher pencil hardness of coated film on the glass. Our results concluded that even polyorganosiloxanes having similar siloxane structures show different physical properties as function of cross-linking density and phenyl content in polyorganosiloxane.

  • Crosslinked PI films were synthesized from 4,4'-(hexafluoro isopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and bis[4-(3-aminophenoxy) phenyl] sulfone(BAPS) with various ratios of the reactive monomer cis-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride(CDBA). We prepared crosslinked poly(amic acid) (PAA) using a 0.1 wt% Grubbs catalyst as a crosslinking agent. The crosslinked PAA was heat-treated at different temperatures to give PI films. The thermo-mechanical properties and optical transparency of the PI films were investigated. The thermal properties of the PI films were examined using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), thermo-mechanical analysis(TMA), and universal tensile machine(UTM), and their optical transparencies were investigated using UV-vis. spectrophotometry. The thermomechanical properties of the PI films improved with increasing CDBA content. However, the optical transparency of the PI films decreased slightly with increasing CDBA content.

  • The cure properties of rubber compounds containing different adhesive compositions were examined. As the amounts of tannin were increased in the adhesive composition, the scorch time was increased and cure rate was decreased due to the size and shape of tannin molecules. Also, the effect of adhesive composition on the adhesion between rubber and fiber was examined by TCAT(Tire Cord Adhesion Test), The reinforcing cords used in this study were mon ofilaments of nylon 610 and nylon 66. According to the results, the optimum adhesion strength between rubber and fiber could be obtained with adhesives whose molar ratios of formaldehyde/resorcinol were above 5/1 in the recipes. Although the level of dip pick-up(DPU) on the reinforcing cord affects the adhesion strength, the DPU of nylon 610 monofilament did not affect the adhesion strength because the level of DPU was constant regardless of the adhesive compositions. In this case, the adhesion strength with the adhesive composition could be explained with the behavior of tannin in the adhesive.
