  • Objectives : Chim-Gu-Kyung-Heom-Bang(CGKHB; 鍼灸經驗方) is the needle and moxa specialized document written by the doctor specialized in needle and moxa treatment of Joseon(朝鮮), Heo Im(1570-1647). The document was published in April 1644(22nd year of King Injo). CGKHB contains the needle and moxa treatment techniques accumulated by the Joseon Dynasty as well as the personal experience of Heo Im. The aim of this study is to restore the past treatment method as a method of Needle Insertion Method at CV12(NIM-CV12, needle to penetrate blood vessel technique) in CGKHB.. Methods : Through Dong-Yi-Bao-Gam(DYBG; 東醫寶鑑), the implication of Korean medicine study of the Jungwan(CV12) has been studied. Next is the contemplation of the NIM-CV12 of CGKHB with the Acupuncture Treatment Using Jungwan(中脘鍼法) of Park Tae-won and Acupuncture Treatment for Byeokjeok(癖積鍼法) of "Geup Yubang". Results and Conclusions : 1. CV12 is one of the acupuncture points representing stomach(脾胃), middle energizer(中焦), phlegm-fluid retention(痰飮) and greater yin(太陰). 2. NIM-CV12 of CGKHB is the technique to penetrate the needle into the CV12 strictly relying on tactile sense of a person who give the penetration. This CV12 administration was carried out at intervals of every 7 or 8 day. During the administration period, the patient was not allowed to intake excessive amount of food. 3. The Acupuncture Treatment Using Jungwan(中脘鍼法) of Park Tae-won and Acupuncture Treatment for Byeokjeok(癖積鍼法) of "GeupYubang", existed in the same era of the NIM-CV12 of CGKHB, have similar linkage to the NIM-CV12 of Heo Im.

  • All this while, 'Chimgugyeongheombang' has been rated as the level of Im Heo's personal writing. However, Huh, m, in his introduction of 'Chimgugyeongheombang' made it clear that his purpose of publishing this book was to criticize the doctors of the day who were tied down by one or two curative methods, and at the same time, ultimately to improve the quality of national medical service by enlightening them. It seems that such incompetent doctors' engagement in medical service at that time was attributable to insufficient medical education system unlike today as against much social demand for acupuncture & moxibustion therapy. Im Heo, in an effort to enlighten the medical practitioners of the day, put emphasis on an eclectic method, and contained the theories on internal organs and meridian on a systematic basis. In addition, he made his updated medical skills known to medical circles by integrating and wrapping up the Acupuncture & Moxibustion techniques at that time. Lastly, he tried to provide the optimized information for clinical trials in his own language by using a preposterous writing style and form. In such a context, 'Chimgugyeongheombang' is not a special medical book gripped with a sentence, or a simple medical formula with an emphasis on empiricism, but rather it might be proper to say that his 'Chimgugyeongheombang' was a serious attempt to embrace all the merits of both parties.

  • In this study a correspondence between Lee-HyungYik (李馨益)'s Burnchim (燔鍼) and InJo (仁祖)'s illness was made and Lee-HyungYik (李馨益)'s Burnchim (燔鍼) was examined in detail. The data researched was an article about Lee-HyungYik's Burnchim treatment that appeared in the Daily Records of the Royal Secretariat ["承政院日記"]. Based on this article, comparisons and contrasts with the contents of Shin-Eung Kyung ("神鷹經")'s ChimGuKyungHumBang (鍼灸經驗方) were made. As a result, it was found that Lee-HyungYik's Burnchim can be categorized as a kind of Burning Acupuncture Therapy [火鍼] and that his method succeeds that of Shin-Eung Kyung. It can be seen as a specialized version of the treatment methods for 'Kansa & Thirteen Acupoints' ('間使 and 十三穴'). This method was used to treat QueSa (鬼邪), which corresponds to the fact that InJo was agonizing over the imprecation incident in the palace at that time. The specific method of Burnchim is similar to that of HuaChimchinlZyung mentioned in ChimGuKyung-HumBang; it is highly possible that the method introduced in ChimGuKyungHumBang is a description of Lee-HyungYik's Burnchim.

  • Objectives : It is noted that Jukheon-Silheombang(Actual Formulas of Jukheon), is a rare book published by a private physician in 1950s. The study of this book is the data that can be used to see how the acupuncture of Huh-Im is inherited and performed in the local small towns right after the Korean War. Methods : Through the investigation of various literature data and interviews with the author's descendants, Jukheon-Silheombang's related figures, citation documents, book formation and content characteristics were descriptively analyzed. Results and Conclusions : Jukheon-Silheombang can be used to study characteristics of acupuncture treatments given in a small town in the late 1950s. It has the significance of preserving traditional acupuncture such as the Sakwan point method and inheriting the clinical utility of Chimgu-Kyungheombang(Acupucture & Moxibustion Skills Guide) of Huh-Im.

  • Objectives : This paper aims to study how 'All articulations are controlled by the gallbladder' as urged by Heoim in Chimgugyeongheombang was reflected in the clinical field, and look into the reason for his assertion. Methods : The paper looked into Chimgugyeongheombang and 1) found examples of how acupoints related to gallbladder were used to treat articulation-related diseases, and 2) investigated the relation between gallbladder and articulations through analyzing the acupoints used for treating articulation-related diseases. These are then compared with Zhenjiuzishengjing to see if the assertions made in 'All articulations are controlled by the gallbladder' were actually applied in clinical fields. Results & Conclusions : Heoim dealt with 20 points out of the 44 acupoints for gallbladder, and used 14 of them for treatments of articulation-related diseases. Gallbladder acupoints were used for ten illnesses, and four of them were related to articulation. Chimgujasaenggyeong showed a difference in that it did not utilize gallbladder acupoints to treat these illnesses. Out of 33 articulation-related illnesses, gallbladder meridians and acupoints were suggested as a means to treat them in 15 cases, and this is an increase in the usage of these points compared to Chimgugyeongheombang. In other words, Heoim actively utilized gallbladder meridian points in treating articulation-related illnesses. The reason Heoim drew a line between gallbladder and articulations is because gallbladder is categorized as a lesser yang pivot and articulations itself functions as a pivot by acting as a pivot for human body movement.

  • Objectives : Chimgugyeongheombang's Byulhyul, or special points, is a list of extra points, and its acupoint types and positions are different from other books. Its source, however, is kept behind the vale. This paper aims to reveal Byulhyul's contents and source. Methods : Qixiaoliangfang, Jinjiudacheng, and Donguibogam's Gihyul were studied to determine the source of Chimgugyeongheombang's Byulhyul. Results & Conclusions : Chimgugyeongheombang lists a total of 59 special points. It cites 22 meridian points from Qixiaoliangfang, 26 points from Jinjiudacheng, and 36 points from Donguibogam. The Dictionary of Acupuncture records the source of 6 meridian points that aren't found in conventional books, namely the Soongol, Backro, Yeose, Eumdo, Naetaechoong, and Gabgeun points, as Zhenjiujicheng. However, Zhenjiujicheng, in reality, is a book put together with excerpts from three books: Donguibogam, Chimgugyeongheombang, and Leijingtuyi. This means that it's Chimgugyeongheombang that is the source of Zhenjiujicheng. Moreover, all of the points save for Soongol and Eumdo were also used in the acupunctural treatment of 9 diseases including epilepsy. In other words, it can be safely assumed that Heo Im came up with and utilized new special points based on his personal clinical experiences, and this is significant in that he expanded the boundary of the conventional study of acupuncture through his independent experiences and studies.

We can cite salt water washing method after needling, pricking bloodletting method using three-edged needle, surgery method using bent needle and lance needle, or sore treatment using sliced bean-curd and ground Aristolochiae Fructus among others. Acupuncture points like GV20[百會], BL1[睛明], EX-HN5[太陽], GB20[風池], GV24[神庭], GB1[瞳子髎], and GB15[臨泣] were mostly needled. 2. In "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine[東醫寶鑑]", pricking bloodletting method were most frequently used in comparison to single acupuncture or moxibustion methods. Applied points were GV20[百會], BL1[睛明], LI4[合谷], EX-HN5[太陽], GB37[光明], BL18[肝兪], GB20[風池], BL2[攢竹], GB1[瞳子髎], and ST36[三里]. Also selections of adjacent points were considered important. 3. In respect to treatment methods "Experiential Prescriptions of Acupuncture and Moxibustion [鍼灸經驗方]" has some similarity to "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine[東醫寶鑑]" as pricking bloodletting method were mostly used. Also focused on normal Qi flow through meridian. Points like BL18[肝兪], BL1[睛明], LU5[尺澤], EX-HN5[太陽], LI4[合谷] were used. 4. "Essential Rhymes on Acupuncture and Moxibustion by Master Saam[校勘舍岩道人鍼法]" considered visceral pattern identification method fundamental in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. Specifically, Liver, Heart, Stomach, Lung, Kidney identification methods are presented. Combined both corresponding and connecting meridians supplementation and draining methods according to mother-child relation. Also Saam master's own experiential prescriptions are noted. Conclusions : After previous study on stroke, we could also find various efficient methods according to eye diseases, through literature research of korean medical classics. This study will concurrently result in establishing distinctive therapeutic method characteristic of Korea.
