Analysis of the Realistic Aesthetic Features of the Movie "Parasite" (영화 <기생충>의 현실주의 미학적 특징 해석)

  • In recent years, the Korean realistic theme of the film momentum gradually rising. Realistic films do not stick to the business and market, and do not simply cater to the audience's needs for watching movies. They reflect social violence and cruel reality, allowing the audience to observe the structural contradictions in reality and think about the direction when watching movies. At the recent cannes film festival, "parasite" won the top prize palm in cannes by an overwhelming margin, with the highest score of 3.3 issues. Although this film is positioned as a thriller with comedy elements, it presents the opposite life images of Korean classes to the audience in a parasitic way, which not only expands the possibility and artistry of realistic film aesthetics, but also enhances the appreciation of the film and gives play to its own aesthetic value. Focusing on the technical and literary nature of the film, and having a high degree of attention to real life, it is an excellent work that tells about class opposition and thinking about reality. This paper considers and analyzes the content, form and creation method of parasite, and discusses the continuous exploration and attempt of realistic film to image language under the demand of market and system, evolving into new aesthetic expression.

Stephen Sondheim's Experiments and Strategies for Musical Fusion Style (스티븐 손드하임의 뮤지컬 융합 양식을 향한 실험과 전략)

  • This paper aims to identify the characteristics implied in the process of change of Stephen Sondheim's musical style and to derive the structural communication tools that connect the creator and audience and the implications. The strategies that appear in Sondheim's musical works are the following. First, Sondheim's early musical works follow the principles of book musical and emphasize the integration faithful to the basic elements such as the rhythm and meaning of the lyrics. Second, in the era of early postmodernism, Sondheim attempts the principle of extreme deconstruction through the concept musical Company and pursues rational thought through fragmented dramatic flow. Third, while maintaining dramatic linearity to overcome the lack of immersion caused by extreme deconstruction, Sondheim realizes a more elaborate and formalized fusion style of the principles of integration and deconstruction through the choruses and the songs of the characters in Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. Finally, Sondheim attempts multiple experiments to break down the boundaries of act and scene and to express new subject matters through his works such as Sunday Park with George and Into the Woods. In conclusion, Sondheim's fusion experiments and strategies are the process of finding a framework and a medium of communication to induce dramatic immersion of audience and at the same time create rational thinking about social problems to deliver the message of the creative work with the leading aesthetics of the modern musical's box-office success.

Reconsideration of Film Music with Repetitive Rhythm Characteristics - Focusing on the Aesthetic and Functional Meaning of Philip Glass's Film Music - (반복적인 리듬 특성을 지닌 영화음악의 고찰 - 필립 글래스(Philip Glass)의 영화음악에 관한 미학적, 기능적 의미를 중심으로 -)

  • This study studied five major films from the 1980s to the 2000s when Philip Glass's minimal music was used, and studied the aesthetic and functional meaning of the minimal music. Minimal music has a repetitive rhythm and is understood to be aesthetically monotonous, to avoid a particular purpose, or as an expression of moveless. On the one hand, it can mean infinite persistence by repetitive rhythms, or sometimes repetition with subtle changes. The functions of film music were applied as the function of film music common to many theorists. As a result of the analysis of the music in five films, the aesthetic meaning of Philip Glass's minimal music was most relevant to the characteristics of the film story, and the functional meaning of the film music was determined by the structure, form, and genre of the film. Therefore, the theme of the film and the contents of the story played an important role in the aesthetic interpretation of film music with repetitive rhythm characteristics. And the elements of the plot such as the structure, form, and genre of the film are thought to have had a significant effect on the functional interpretation of the film music. The aesthetic value of the film music is closely related to the story of the film, and the functional meaning of the film music is interpreted as determined by the formal elements of the film.

  • Director Lee Chang Dong said that it is the most important point for revealing the invisible beauty so that the audience could feel the unseen beauty through the . Discussing about how to find beauty that is not only visible but also invisible through the main character Mi-ja from the film, who makes a decision and reactions on her daily life by her perception that are difficult for others to take same. The film tells that how Mi-ja's ideal of a beauty can be taken the role for writing a poetry at the moment of the dead poet society, making a movie in the age of dying emotion and also when it lost fundamental values and about movie media. This study analyzed the performances of the main character Mi-ja in the film, and actress Yoon Jung Hee based on Director Lee Chang Dong's directed performance. The audience will be self-questioning and reflecting their life through the Mi-ja's an unidentifiable characteristic which something that someone cannot say, something that someone cannot express, something that tells something through Mi-ja's poem and actress herself finds the character's feelings.

  • This study reconsidered the characteristics of the narrative through the analysis of the meaning and function of the film music in the feature film "The Truman Show". Especially, this study was focused on the music of Philip Glass among the film music of this film, and it started from the analysis of his musical meaning and function written in the pre-existing film according to the use of the editing music. As the film music needs to be analyzed from the viewpoint of the storytelling of the narrative of the film, the music is analyzed through 12 functions of the background music. Throughout the film, Philip Glass's music has been very important in the scenes of amplification, climax, and resolution of conflict. Especially, in the important context of the character and narrative structure of the film, such as the amplification of the tension and the resolution of the tension in the conflict of Truman, the main character of the film, Philip Glass's music is important through the contrast of the tempo of music and the contrast of emotional character. It can also be understood that this contrasts with the character and storytelling of the film in terms of film musical contrasts.

Female Development in Nineteenth-Century England and Dynamics of the Bildungsroman (19세기 영국 여성의 "성장"과 성장소설의 역동성)

  • This paper attempts to examine complicated relations which the nineteenth-century English novel of female development has with the Bildungsroman genre, and to discuss that the story of female development effectively realizes the potential dynamics of the genre. It looks into the history of discussions on the Bildungsroman which began at the end of the nineteenth-century in Germany and developed among twentieth-century Anglo-American critics, and those on the female development which didn't start until feminist criticism ventured out at the end of 1970s, and have developed into various perspectives ever since in accordance to the progress of feminist criticism. In general, Bildungsroman criticism considers that it portrays the process how the protagonist develops self and achieves an accommodation with society. However, this paper points out that the Bildungsroman is the narrative form which represents conflicts between self and society caused by idealizing the infinitive possibility of self-determination while simultaneously presenting the limited goal of social integration. It argues that the subversive dynamics of the genre can give full play to its potential when it reveals contradictions and tensions between individual subjectivity and integration into society and connects them with criticism of political and social structures. It is the stories of female Bildungshelds depicted by nineteenth-century female writers that exquisitely embody the subversive potential of the Bildungsroman. They acutely experience alienation from society where independency or autonomy is fundamentally impossible because the ideology of separate spheres does not allow them to live a meaningful life economically and sociologically outside the marriage. An example of a female Bildungsheld whose conflicts between development of self and integration with society are doubled by gender is Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre is a representative Bildungsroman with subversive dynamics, which tells the story of female development but splits itself through various techniques inserting contradictory and opposite meanings, thus resignifying female development and questioning social and political structures.

The Relationship among Attitude toward DNR Orders, Depression and Self-esteem in the Elderly (노인의 심폐소생술 금지(DNR)에 대한 태도와 우울 및 자아존중감과의 관계)

  • This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed to investigate the relationship among attitude toward DNR orders, depression, and self-esteem in the elderly. Method: The participants of this study were 99 elderly individuals who were hospitalized in four university hospitals in Seoul and Kangwon-do from October 1, 2006 to October 21, 2006. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Results: The mean scores were 3.99 for attitude toward DNR orders(range of 1-5), 6.64 for depression(range of 1-15), and 26.83 for self-esteem(range of 10-40). Self-esteem was significantly correlated with attitude toward DNR orders(r=.200, p=.047). About half of the participants(49.5%) responded that the proper time for obtaining DNR consent was when they were healthy and could express their own intentions and make the decision by themselves. Most of the participants showed a positive attitude toward DNR orders. The participants preferred to make the DNR decision when they were healthy. Therefore, health care providers working with the elderly should try to discuss the DNR decision with their patients when they are conscious and able to make the DNR decision by themselves rather than leaving the decisions up to the patient's family members

Body Movement as Identity: The Meaning of the 'Bodily Culture' of Older Men at Jongmyo Park (정체성으로서의 몸짓: 종묘공원 노년 남성들의 '몸짓문화'의 의미)

  • The purpose of this article is to examine how the 'bodily culture' of older men who gather at Jongmyo Park serves to express and solidify their sense of a enduring self. The research was carried out based on the anthropological methods of participant observation and in-depth interviews at Jongmyo park and its adjacent areas. In later life, the image of a continuous self becomes harder to achieve due to the ageism prevalent in modern societies. The situation is worse at Jongmyo park since the park itself has been stigmatized as "the extraterritorial zone for the old" by the media due to the boisterous atmosphere of the park. It is dubbed as a place for those who have nowhere else to go. The singing and dancing, which used to be the dominant forms of activities at the park among older men until the 'sanctification' project propelled by the government, serves as an antidote against the ageist tendency to subjugate them. The 'bodily culture' embodies these men's image of themselves as a continuous being which has not been tarnished by the passage of time. The approach of 'body hermeneutics' is required to interpret the experiences of the body in later life.

The thought of Prajnaparamita in Platform Sutra and Its Origin (『단경(壇經)』의 반약파라밀사상(般若波羅蜜思想)과 그 연원(淵源))

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the origin of prajñāpāramitā thought in Platform-Sutra, because the practices such as No-thought(無念)·No-image(無相)·No-staying(無住), Samadhi for one act(一行三昧), Seating meditation(坐禪) and Non- distinction of calmness and wisdom(定慧一體) are consolidated into the practice of prajñāpāramitā. The practice of No-thought, No-image and No-staying means an absolute stage which cannot be described in words. It is another expression of prajñā-samadhi or practice of prajñā -pāramitā whose concepts originate from Diamond-Sūtra, Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra, Mahāparinibbāna-sūtra, and Mahāprajñā-pāramitā-Sūtra. Samadhi for one act is to have an insight into the original nature in everyday life, which is a new development of practicing prajñāpāramitā. Seating meditation is another form of expression of Sudden Enlightenment to see into one's original nature(頓悟見性) through practicing prajñāpāramitā. This can be said a new kind of mixture of Buddhadhātu thought and prajñāpāramitā thought. Therefore prajñāpāramitā thought in Platform Sutra comes from Buddhadhātu thought and prajñāpāramitā thought. Those two thoughts consolidated in Platform Sutra, made the starting point of Zen Buddhism. At the same time, they further continued to be systemized into the thought of Zen Buddhism and eventually into the conclusion of Zen sect of Chinese Buddhism.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the protection of third parties of the transactions made by the representative director without resolution adopted by the board of directors. The legal effect of a transaction conducted by a representative director without board resolution in violation of internal restriction or statutory restriction is at issue. The Supreme Court of Korea('SCK') made a new ruling that revised the prior case law(Supreme Court en banc Decision 2015Da45451, Feb. 18, 2021). The SCK in the subject case proclaimed a legal doctrine that 'a third party acting in good faith' shall be protected according to Article 389(3) and 209(2) of the Korean Commercial Act, except that 'a third party with gross negligence' is considered as 'a person acting in bad faith' and thus is excluded from protection. The subject case law can be evaluated as broadening the scope of protection of the third party. In addition, the subject case is meaningful in that it is balance with the related SCK ruling, which considered a third party with gross negligence as a person acting in bad faith while protecting a third party with ordinary negligence in the case of transactions involving apparent representative directors, etc.
