Microstructural evolution in liquid-phase sintered $\alpha$-silicon carbide (액상소결 $\alpha$형 탄화규소의 미세구조 변화)

  • After the addition of yttrium aluminum garnet of 2, 5, 10 mol% as a sintering aid, $\alpha$-silicon carbides were prepared by a liquid-phase sintering at $1850^{\circ}C$, and the microstructural evolution was investigated during sintering as functions of liquid-phase amount and sintering time. The highest apparent density in each compositions was obtained in specimens sintered for 2 h, and the percentage of weight loss increased with sintering time. By increasing the amount of sintering aid (yttrium aluminum garnet), the rate of grain growth during sintering decreased, but the apparent density of sintered body increased. The phase transformation from 6H-SiC to 4H-SiC was partially observed in specimens sintered for a long time, and so, a few rod-like grains were observed.

Determination of Constant Friction Factor and Forming Characteristics of Sintered Porous Metal (소결금속 의 성형 특성 및 마찰 상수 결정 에 관한 연구)

  • On the basis of plasticity theory for porous metal, an analysis of ring compression is carried out, employing the upper bound approach. The plastic flowability and the neutral radius of porous metal ring are calculated and deformation characteristics of power forging are obtained from this result. The experiments on ring compression are carried out for sintered iron porous metal with various relative densities under various friction conditions. A good agreement is observed between the shapes of the calculated curves and the experimental results from the ring compression test. The friction factor for powder metal forming can be determined not only from the relationship between reduction in height and reduction in internal diameter but independently from the relationship between reduction in height and relative density, if the initial relative density is known.

  • Dynamic characteristics of powder metal is very important to mechanical structures requiring high strength or endurance for impact loading. But owing to distinctive property of powder metal, that is relative, it has been investigated restrictively compared to static characteristics. The objectives of this study is to investigate dynamic characteristics of powder metal and compare it to a fully density material. To find the characteristics, an explicit finite element method is used for simulation of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experiment based on the stress wave propagation theory. We obtained a dynamic stress-strain relationship and dynamic behavior of powder metal, as well as the variation of material properties during dynamic deformation.

  • 구상나무림 보전관리의 기초자료를 마련하고자 지리산 한라산 및 덕유산의 아고산지대에 95개의 조사구를 설치하여 한국특산종 구상나무의 생육현황과 구상나무 서식지의 입지인지를 조사하였다 구상나무는 흉고직경 10-30cm의 범위에 드는 나무들이 주로 고사목으로 나타났으며 고사목의 비율은 전체적으로 총개체수의 11.51%였다 고사목의 비율또한 덕유산에서 18.18%로 가장높게나타났고 한라산 지역이 8.11%로 가장 낮게 나타났다 조사구당 구상나무 개체수 치수의 개체수 구상나무의 수고와 흉고직경 생육현황표에 의한 점수 구상나무의 상대밀도 등은 지역간에 통계적 유의차가 인정되었다 생육중인 구상나무의 활력은 한라산 지리산, 덕유산으로 순으로 좋았다 조사구당 구상나무 치수의 개체수는 한라산에서 6.00개체로 가장 많았으며 덕유산에서는 치수가 없는 것으로 나타났다 구상나무의 상대밀도도 한라산, 지리산, 덕유산 순으로 높게 나타났다. 조사구당 구상나무 개체수는 해발고와 정의 상관, 방위, 낙엽퇴의 두께, 조사구당 교목의 개체수 및 종수, 활엽수 상대밀도와는 부의 상관이 인정되었다. 구상나무 상대밀도는 해발고와는 고도의 정의 상관관계 방위 조사 구당교목의 개체수 및 종수 수관울폐도, 활엽수 상대밀도와는 부의 상관관계가 인정되었다 지리산, 한라산 및 덕유산에 자생하는 구상나무는 해발고가 높으며 볕이 잘들고 낙엽퇴가 얕으며 종구성이 단순하고 활엽수가 적은 지역에 보다 많이 분포한다.

Effect of Moisture on Tensile Strength in Sand (모래의 인장강도에 미치는 함수비의 영향)

  • An extensive tension experiment was carried out to examine the variation of tensile strength in moist sand having moisture contents in the range of 0.5% < w < 4.0% with newly developed direct tension apparatus. It was observed that tensile strength of sand varied as functions of moisture content, relative density, presence of fines, and level of precompression. Tensile strength increases with increasing moisture content and fines, and this trend is more noticeable at increasing relative densities. However, the influences of relative density and fines on the tensile strength are substantially dependent on the water content. These effects are reduced at low moisture levels (w < 0.5%). The precompression effects also depend on the water content but less on the duration and level of the precompression.

  • When narrowly excavated in the urban area, the wall of backfill space is not only symmetrical but also asymmetrical. In this case, the horizontal stress induced by backfilling depends mostly on the wall asymmetry and the wall friction angle. Therefore, in this study, the model test in the laboratory was conducted to investigate horizontal earth pressure with depth considering various boundary conditions such as base width, wall friction, relative density of backfill, and wall angle. As the wall is smoother and wall angle is lower from the bottom, the results showed higher the horizontal stresses due to the increase of vertical stresses.

  • In this study, simulation on the powder compression forming of oilless bearing is performed and the analysis results are compared with the actual products. This study aims to examine the suitability of powder compression for bearing by using FEA(finite element analysis) before full-scale production. The lubrication state can be predicted by changing the coefficient of friction in order to get the optimal density gradient. Analysis for single and double action presses are performed and these results are compared with each other. State and process of optimal lubrication are proposed from the study result.

  • In this Part 2, the grain growth processes of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics is numerically simulated using Monte Carlo method (MCM) and finite element method (FEM) and the pore sizes are analyzed. As the green ceramics whose thermal conductivities in high temperatures are generally low are sintered by the plasma heat and are rapidly cooled, the grain growth of the sintered body in the center is different from that in the outer. Also, even in the same sintering temperature, the pore size differs according to the pressing pressure. In order to prove the difference, the temperature distribution of the sintered body was analyzed using the finite element method and then the grain growth process associated with pressing pressures and relative densities was simulated using Monte Carlo method.

  • $\alpha$-Si$_3$N$_4$가 20vol% 혼합된 SiC/Si$_3$N$_4$혼합물에서 $\alpha$-SiC의 일부를 SiC whisker로 치환하여 첨가한 후 180$0^{\circ}C$, 25MPa의 압력으로 hot pressing하여 SiC/Si$_3$N$_4$/SiCw 복합체를 제조하였다. SiC whisker의 첨가 함량이 증가할수록 상대밀도, 꺽임강도, 마모 저항성은 감소되었으나, 파괴인성은 크게 향상되었다. $\alpha$-SiC의 일부를 SiC whisker로의 치환은 치밀화를 억제하였으나 파괴인성의 증가는 마모 저항성을 향상시키지 않았다.

Strength Characteristics and their Behaviours of Marine Silty Sands (실트질 해사의 역학적 특성 및 거동에 관한 연구)

  • A series of isotropic consolidation tests, undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was carried out to investigate the physical characteristics and behaviours of marine silty sands collected from the western coast of Korea. This study also included a theoretical development of the constitutive equation to evaluate stress-strain relationship and volume change of silty sands. The results and main conclusions of the study are summarized as follows; 1. Isotropic compression and swelling index are linearly decreased with an increase in relative density. 2. Both undrained shear strengh and elastic modulus are increased with an increase in relative density and confining pressure. 3. Internal friction angles obtained from drained and undrained compression tests of the soils are proportional to relative density. 4. The phenomenon of dilatancy of each sample is less profound when confining stress is increased but more profound when relative density is increased. 5. The slope of critical state lines is 1.78 for Saemangum, 1.70 for Siewha and 1.26 for Sukmoon sands. 6. In this study, Drucker-Praper type criterion is used and hardening function of Cap model is modified by hyperbolic fuction. This will improve a lack of physical meaning of hardening parameters in conventional Cap model. 7. A newly developed constitutive equation to the forementioned silty sands and checked its applicability. This is in good agreement with the measured data.
