  • Level II AFDA and Level III MCS reliability models are applied to analyze the stability of armor units on trading and coastal harbors in Korea. Hudson's formula and Van der Meer's formula are used in this reliability analysis. Also, probability density functions of reliability index and probability of failure are derived by the additional analysis. In addition, the partial safety factors of all harbors related to armor units can be straightforwardly evaluated by the inverse-reliability method. The upper and lower limits and average level of partial safety factors can be statistically investigated with the results of all cases applied in this paper. Therefore, it may be possible to design armor units of new breakwaters including the uncertainty of random variable and target level by using the present results.

  • Morphological characters of Zanclus cornutus are redescribed in detail based on a single specimen (89 mm SL) collected from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is characterized by a protruding mouth, a short spine in front of each eye, and the third spine of dorsal fin prolonged into a long filament.

  • This study is derived from relation between the natural landscape and architectural landscape. The type of landscape in Donghae seaside consist of three; Road, Mountain, Seaside. And we selected three landscapes about individual housing; Western, Traditional, Modern. This paper is analyzed 18-simulation scenes, which evaluated with semantic differential method in using 12-bipolar adjectives. The results of this study are as follows(ref: table 6). 1)The housing of western style do not correspond with landscape of Road, but landscape of mountain and seaside were suitable to the western style. 2)Mountain in Donghae seaside harmonizes with housing of traditional style. 3)Even though the housing of modern style were marked low assessment in three landscape, we found out relation, modern housing was well-matched with load landscape.

  • Navigation of ships is mainly being performed through high sea, but inbound/outbound vessels to a port are characteristic of going via territorial sea of coastal countries. At territorial sea, all ships are under the influence of korea' sovereignty and enjoy innocent passage on the basis of UN Convention on the Law at the Sea(UNCLOS). But in the practical points of view, we want to examine legally on these issues, because we have no clear criteria for reasons about anchor except anchorage and innocent passage at territorial sea prescribed at national laws, moreover it can be used maliciouly.

  • This paper introduces a network system for monitoring coastal oceanographic data. The network system consists of three parts such as the buoy to observe oceanographic data, the local site to collect data transferred from buoys, and the host site to construct the oceanographic data-base and to share the information for monitoring coastal oceanographic data. The buoy has a one-board microcomputer to manage and to acquire coastal environment data in real-time. A wireless and wire communication technique is employed in order to transfer data measured by buoys and to link local and host sites, respectively. In measuring coastal environment data, this system shows more cost-effective way than the presents conventional. In addition, the realtime monitoring system continuously from various sites with the network systems.

  • The environmental value of coastal vegetation has been widely recognized. Coastal vegetation such as reed forests and seaweed performs several useful functions, including maintaining water quality, supporting fish (and, thus, fisheries), protecting beaches and land from wave attack, stabilizing sea beds and providing scenic value. However, studies on the physical and numerical process of wave propagation, sediment transport and bathymetric change are few and far between compared to those on the hydrodynamic roles of coastal vegetation. In general, vegetation flourishing along the coastal areas attenuates the incident waves through momentum exchange between stagnated water mass in the vegetated area and rapid mass in the un-vegetated area. This study develops a numerical model for describing the wave attenuation and sediment transport in a wave channel in a vegetation area. By comparing these results, the effects of vegetation properties, wave properties and model parameters are clarified.

  • A smooth hammerhead, Sphyrna zygaena, was caught from the coastal water of Boryeoung-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea in June 13, 2014. The shark had a total of 23 fetuses in its body. There were 12 males and 11 females. The total length of the young sharks ranges from 49.0 cm to 54.7 cm. This collection suggested that western coastal water of Korea is a birth ground of smooth hammerhead, Sphyrna zygaena.
