THE PROPERTIES OF THE STELLAR NUCLEI WITH THE HOST GALAXY MORPHOLOGY IN THE ACSVCS

  • We have revisited the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS), a Hubble Space Telescope program to obtain ACS/WFC g and z bands imaging for a sample of 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. In this study, we examine 51 nucleated early-type galaxies in the ACSVCS in order to look into the relationship between the photometric and structural properties of stellar nuclei and their host galaxies. We morphologically dissect galaxies into five classes. We note that (1) the stellar nuclei of dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are generally fainter and bluer with g > 18.95 and (g-z) < 1.40 compared to some brighter and redder counterparts of the ellipticals (E) and lenticular galaxies (S0), (2) the g-band half-light radii of stellar nuclei of all dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are smaller than 20 pc and their average is about 4 pc, and (3) the colors of red stellar nuclei with (g - z) > 1.40 in bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies are bluer than their host galaxies colors. We also show that most of the unusually "red" stellar nuclei with (g-z) > 1.54 in the ACSVCS are the central parts of bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies. Furthermore, we present multi photometric band color - color plots that can be used to break the age-metallicity degeneracy particularly by inclusion of the thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phases of stellar evolution in the stellar population models.

탈지분유의 열처리 공정이 고단백질 RTD 커피의 품질 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Heat Treatment History of Skim Milk Powder on the Quality Characteristics of RTD Coffee with High Protein)

  • This study investigated the quality of characteristics of high-protein RTD coffee using domestic and imported skim milk powder with different heat treatment. Skim milk powders (A, B) had high-heat treatment, C had medium-heat, and D and E had low-heat treatment. The transmittance of A and B were higher than that of C, and that of C were higher than that of D and E (p<0.05). The precipitate attached on bottom of container of RTD coffee using A and B were 2.993~3.053% and higher than those (0.753~0.803%) of RTD coffee using C, D and E (p<0.05), but there was no difference between those of RTD coffee using C, D and E (p<0.05). The centrifuged precipitate of RTD coffee using A and B were 1.987~2.040% and higher than those (0.820~0.830%) of RTD coffee using C, D and E (p<0.05), but there was no difference between those of RTD coffee using C, D and E (p<0.05). The proximate composition of precipitate attached on bottom of container of RTD coffee using A, which showed the highest amount of precipitate, showed 65.7% of carbohydrate, 19.0% of protein, 4.8% of fat and 4.8% of ash in dry basis, that of RTD coffee being 72.7%, 15.1%, 7.9% and 4.3% in dry basis respectively. Protein and fat content of precipitate were lower and protein and ash content were higher than those of RTD coffee. But seeing that the most increased portion was protein, precipitation of RTD coffee appears to be attributed to heat-denatured proteins.

연장된 E-plane 프로브를 이용한 밀리미터파 도파관 변환기 (Millimeter-wave waveguide transducer using extended E-plane probe)

  • 논문은 밀리미터파 통신 및 레이더 응용을 위한 저손실 광대역 도파관 변환기를 제안한다. 기존 E-plane 프로브 변환기는 밀리미터파 대역에서 도파관 크기를 고려하여 매우 얇고 유연한 기판을 사용한다. 하지만, 이러한 기판은 휘어지기 쉬우며 이는 성능을 크게 저하시킨다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 변환기 프로브가 도파관 벽면 틈에 삽입되어 고정되는 연장된 E-plane 프로브 구조를 제안하고, 두께가 $127{\mu}m$이고 유전율 2.2인 기판을 사용하여 제작하였다. W-대역 (75-110 GHz)에서 측정된 백투백(back-to-back) 변환기의 삽입 손실은 3cm 길이 도파관을 포함하여 1.35 dB (${\pm}0.35dB$)이며, 반사 손실은 13.8 dB 이상으로 아주 우수한 특성을 보였다. 따라서, 제안된 변환기는 밀리미터파 초고속 흉신 또는 고감도 레이다에 효과적으로 활용될 수 있다.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of Certain Novel Quinoxalines

  • In this study, certain 3-methyl-2-[4-(substituted amino carbonyl)anilino] quinoxalines, (2a-d) and (3a-d), were synthesized from the new key compound 2-[4-(ethoxycarbonyl)anilino]-3-methyl quinoxaline (1). In addition, a series of 2-[4-(arylidene hydrazinocarbonyl)anilino]-3-methyl quinoxalines (5a-e), as well as their cyclized oxadiazolinyl derivatives (6a-e), and a series of 2-[4-$N^2$-acylhydrazinocarbonyl)anilino]-3-methyl quinoxalines (7a-d), as well as their cyclized oxadiazolyl derivatives (8a-d) were also prepared. Some of these derivatives were evaluated for antimicrobial activity in vitro. It was found that all the selected compounds exhibit antimicrobial activity and that compound 5b had a broad spectrum of activity.

  • Optically active carboxylic acid, D-(-)-$\beta$-hydroxyisobutyric acid {(D)-(-)-HIBA} is a useful chiral starting material for the preparation of enantiomerically pure bioactive compounds which have a chiral methyl carbon center in the molecule such as captopril, $\alpha$-tocopherol, erythromycin A, muscone and so on. (S)-3-Acetoxy-2-methylpropanol can be used as the precursor of (D)-(-)-HIBA, that is, chemical oxidation of the hydroxyl group and subsequent hydrolysis of acyl group in (S)-3-acetoxy-2-methylpropanol affords D-(-)-$\beta$-hydroxyisobutyric acid. (S)-3-Acetoxy-2-methyl-propanol was prepared by lipase-catalyzed asymmetric hydrolysis. In the enzymatic hydrolysis system, lipase AY (Candida rugosa) provided the expected (S)-3-acetoxy-2-methylpropanol in 60% e.e. of the enantiomeric purity under the phosphate buffer and organic co-solvent system.

Internal kinematics of dwarf early-type galaxies with blue-center in the Virgo Cluster from Gemini GMOS long-slit spectroscopy

  • Dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs), the most abundant galaxy type in clusters, were recently shown to exhibit a wide variety in their properties. Particularly, the presence of blue cores in some dEs, what we call dE(bc), supports the scenario of late-type galaxy infall and subsequent transformation into red, quiescent dEs. While several transformation mechanisms for these dE(bc)s within cluster environment have been proposed, all these processes are able to explain only some of the observational properties of dEs. In this context, internal kinematic properties of dE(bc)s provide the most crucial evidence to discriminate different processes for the formation of these galaxies. We present Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS) long-slit spectroscopy of two dE(bc)s in the Virgo cluster. We obtained radial profiles of velocity and velocity dispersion out to ~1.3 effective radius. We found that two dE(bc)s exhibit kinematically decoupled components as well as distinct peculiar features in velocity profiles, supporting the scenario of mergers. We also found that these galaxies are structurally compatible with low surface brightness component of blue compact dwarf galaxies. We suggest that a part of dE(bc)s in the Virgo Cluster were formed through galaxy merger in low density environment such as galaxy group or outskirt of the cluster, and then were quenched by subsequent effects within cluster environment.

  • Further phytochemical investigation on the whole plant of Thyrsanthera suborbicularis, collected in Cambodia, led to kaempferol (1), vitexin (2), apigenin-7-O-neohesperidoside (3), chrysoeriol-7-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (4), isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside (5), kaempferol-3-O-[${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(13)-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(16)-${\beta}$-D-galactopyranoside (6), kaempferol-3-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranosyl(12)-O-[${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranosyl (16)]-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (7), kaempferol-3-O-[6"-O-(E)-p-coumaroyl]-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (8), kaempferol-3-O-[6"-O-(E)-p-coumaroyl]-${\beta}$-D-galactopyranoside (9), and amentoflavone (10). All the structures were confirmed by the interpretation of NMR (1D and 2D) and MS data, and comparison with the published values. Of the isolated compounds 1 - 10, compounds 8 and 10 displayed the inhibitory activity against NO production in LPS-induced Raw 264.7 cells with $IC_{50}$ values, 3.56 and $15.73{\mu}M$, respectively.

국내 액상발효유에서 분리한 유산균의 동정 및 소화관액 내성조사 (Identification and Tolerance-Test to Digestive Fluids of Lactobacilli Isolated from Korean Liquid Yogurts)

  • 국내 액상발효유 7개 회사 제품을 수거하여 미생물학적인 특성을 조사하였다. 7개 회사 제품(A, B, C, D, E, F 및 G)에서 분리한 8종의 유산균(a, b, b', c, d, e, f 및 g)을 동정해 본 결과 A회사 제품의 a균과 E회사 제품의 e균은 L. casei로 B회사 제품의 b균은 L. acidophilus로, B회사 제품의 b'균, C 회사 제품의 c균 및 G회사 제품의 g균은 L. jugurti로, F 회사 제품의 f균은 L. helveticus로, D회사 제품의 d균은 L. bulgaricus로 각각 동정되었다. L. helveticus로 동정된 f균과 L. jugurti로 동정된 c균은 인공위액에 대한 내성은 높았으나 담즙산에 대한 내성은 높지 못했다. L. acidophilus로 동정된 b균과 L. casei로 동정된 a균 및 e균은 인공위액과 담즙산에 대한 내성이 모두 높았고, L. bulgaricus로 동정된 d균과 L. jugurti 동정된 b'균 및 g균은 인공위액과 담즙산에 대한 내성이 모두 낮았다.

평면형리간드가 배위된 trans-백금(Ⅱ) 착물의 항암활성에 관한 이론적 연구 (제2보) (Theoretical Study on Antitumor Activity of trans-Platinum(Ⅱ) Complexes with Planar Ligands (Ⅱ))

  • 질소를 포함한 평면형리간드가 배위된 백금(II)착물([$Pt(L)_2X_2$]; L=isoxazole(isox), 3,5-dimethylisoxazole(3,5-diMeisox), 3-methyl,5-phenylisoxazole(3-Me,5-Phisox), and 4-amino-3,5-dimethylisoxazole(4-ADI); X=Cl, Br)의 항암활성을 분자역학(MM2)법으로 최소에너지를 갖는 구조를 구한 후 확장분자궤도함수(Extended Huckel Molecular Orbital)법으로 조사하였다. X 원자의 알짜전하 값은 cis-, trans-이성체 모두 평면리간드의 N 원자보다 음의 값으로 크게 나타나서, N 원자보다 X 원자의 이탈이 용이함을 알 수가 있었고, ${\sigma}MO$에너지 준위로 비교한 결과도 $Pt(d_{x2-y2})-X(P_x)$${\sigma}MO$에너지 준위$(E{\sigma}_{(Pt-X)})$$Pt(d_{x2-y2})-N(P_x)$${\sigma}MO$에너지 준위$(E{\sigma}_{(Pt-N)})$보다 예외없이 높아서 Pt-N보다 Pt-X의 결합이 약함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 X 원자의 cis-, trans-이성체에서의 이탈 용이성을 비교하기 위하여 중심금속과 리간드사이의 ${\sigma}MO$에너지준위로 비교한 결과, trans-이성체에서 $Pt(d_{x2-y2})-N(P_x)$${\sigma}MO$에너지준위$(E{\sigma}_{(Pt-X)})$가 cis-이성체에서 보다 예외없이 높아서 결합이 약함을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 같은 착물에서 cis-보다 trans-착물에서 Pt-X의 결합이 약함을 알 수 있었다, 따라서 $X^-$이온으로 떨어져 나가는 용이성과 그 구조변화가 항암활성과 관계가 있을 것으로 생각하였다. 즉, $E{\sigma}_{(P-N)}-E{\sigma}_{(P1-X)}$가 클수록 저해활성 계수 logIA값이 크게 나타나서 실험적 사실과 일치함을 알 수 있었다.

Blastobotrys illinoisensis, an Unrecorded Anamorphic Yeast Strain Isolated from the Gut of the Earthworm Eisenia fetida

  • Strain E4, an unrecorded species of dimorphic fungi, was isolated from the gut of earthworms collected in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region revealed that this species is a member of the genus Blastobotrys, Blastobotrys illinoisensis. Strain E4 differed from its closest known species, B. mokoenaii and B. malaysiensis, by harboring 3-5 and 12-14 nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 and ITS regions, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on concatenated sequences of the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and the ITS region also indicated that strain E4 belongs to the Blastobotrys clade and is distinct from other related species in the clade. The previously unreported isolate could be distinguished from closely related species by its inability to ferment carbon sources. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the isolation of Blastobotrys species from the gut of earthworms in Korea. The strain used was E4 (=KCTC 27831=JCM 33428).
