  • The intestinal barrier function disrupted in sepsis, while little is known about the variation in different phases of sepsis. In this study, mouse models of sepsis were established by caecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The H&E staining of sections and serum diamine oxidase concentration were evaluated at different timepoint after CLP. TUNEL assay and EdU staining were performed to evaluate the apoptosis and proliferation of intestinal epithelium. Relative protein expression was assessed by Western blotting and serum concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines was measured by ELISA. The disruption of intestinal barrier worsened in the first 24 h after the onset of sepsis and gradually recovered over the next 24 h. The percentage of apoptotic cell increased in the first 24 h and dropped at 48 h, accompanied with the proliferative rate of intestinal epithelium inhibited in the first 6 h and regained in the later period. Furthermore, the activity of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) presented similar trend with the intestinal barrier function, shared positive correction with apoptosis of intestinal epithelium. These findings reveal the conversion process of intestinal barrier function in sepsis and this process is closely correlated with the activity of NF-κB signaling.

  • Purpose: Currently, the most recommended method for burn first aid is the cool running water for 20 minutes (CRW20). If CRW20 is not practicable, cooling dressing products with tea tree oil are used as substitutes. In this study, we analyze the effect of various burn first aids, including CRW20, cooling products, on the treatment period. Methods: This study was conducted on patients who suffered burns and visited Hangangsoo Hospital from March 2019 to March 2020. The study conducted in a retrospective method. The duration of treatment was analyzed by dividing the experimental group. Results: The treatment period was shortened when first aid was given (P<0.001). Cold water, ice, and ice packs resulted in reduced treatment periods (P<0.001, P=0.004). The treatment period was reduced when cooling dressing products were used in all groups (P=0.041). The implementation of first aid has reduced the duration of burn treatment. This means that cooling helps burn treatment. CRW20 did not show statistically meaningful results. This is the result of a failure to fully control the temperature and time of tap water. In addition, the change in temperature of tap water according to season, the use of water is higher than that of animal testing, and the general lack of information on proper burn first aid may have affected. Conclusion: The treatment period was statistically significantly reduced in the group that performed first aid. Among the various first aid methods, cold water and ice reduced the treatment period.

  • Hypothyroidism alone can lead to myocardial fibrosis and result in heart failure, but traditional hormone replacement therapy does not improve the fibrotic situation. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a new gas signaling molecule, possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic capabilities. Whether H2S could improve hypothyroidism-induced myocardial fibrosis are not yet studied. In our study, H2S could decrease collagen deposition in the myocardial tissue of rats caused by hypothyroidism. Furthermore, in hypothyroidism-induced rats, we found that H2S could enhance cystathionine-gamma-lyase (CSE), not cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), protein expressions. Finally, we noticed that H2S could elevate autophagy levels and inhibit the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) signal transduction pathway. In conclusion, our experiments not only suggest that H2S could alleviate hypothyroidism-induced myocardial fibrosis by activating autophagy and suppressing TGF-β1/SMAD family member 2 (Smad 2) signal transduction pathway, but also show that it can be used as a complementary treatment to conventional hormone therapy.

  • This review focuses on the nutritional effects from birth until age at first calving on growth, mammary developmental changes, and first-lactation milk yield in heifer calves. The advancement in the genetic potential and the nutritional requirements of the animals has hastened the growth rate. Genetic selection for high milk yield has suggested higher growth capacity and hence increasing nutritional inputs are required. Rapid rearing by feeding high energy or high concentrate diets not only reduces the age of sexual maturity but also lowers the time period of attaining the age of first calving. However, high energy diets may cause undesirable fat deposition thereby affecting future milk yield potential. Discrepancies exist whether overfed or overweight heifers at puberty can influence the mammary development and future milk yield potential and performance. The data on post-pubertal nutritional management suggested that body weight at calving and post-pubertal growth rate is important in first lactation milk yield. There is a continuous research need for strategic feeding that accelerates growth of dairy heifers without reduction in subsequent production. Nutritional management from birth, across puberty and during pregnancy is critical for mammary growth and for producing a successful cow. This review will mostly highlight studies carried out on dairy breeds and possible available opportunities to manipulate nutritional status from birth until age at first calving.

  • This paper proposes functional test methods of first-aid gadgets which are special end-effectors, for relief robot. In recent years, researches have been actively conducted on robots that can perform rescue operations on behalf of rescue workers in dangerous areas such as disasters and wars. These special robots mainly perform the task of finding or transporting injured people. However, it is sometimes they necessary to provide first aid in the field. Among the various first-aid operations, gadgets are being developed for oxygen supply, injection, and hemostasis operations that can be used in a defense/civilian area by using robot technology. Previous studies have proposed first-aid gadgets that are suitable for onsite situations and enable robots to perform the given task quickly and accurately. In this paper, we design a test procedure suitable for the functions of first-aid gadgets, summarize the results, and introduce future research directions.

  • This study was designed to recognize the factors which can affect the normal eruption of the lower third molar and the eruption rate of the lower third molar in the cases of non-extraction and the extraction of first premolar. The sample consisted of 214 cases of extraction of first premolar and 119 cases of non-extraction, and all of these cases were divided into erupted and impacted lower third molar groups and were analized according to the pantomogram. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The eruption rate of the touter third molar was $54.67\%$ in the group of extraction of the first premolar and $35.29\%$ in the non-extraction group. 2. The early inclination of the erupting lower third molar has significant effect in the eruption of it. 3. In the orthodontic treatment, the extraction of first premolar is one of the factors infuencing the nomal eruption of lower third molar. 4. The available space for the normal enruption of lower third molar was greater in first premolar extraction case than in non-extraction case.

  • The present experiments differning from that conducted by agriculturists with the first consideration of food or seed production were performed in order to investigate the density effect on dry matter production in the artified population of maize. Three experimental plots were established and one seed was sown in the first plot, 2 seeds in the second plot and 3 seeds in the third plot, respectively. The space of each ridge was designed with 30cm in width and 50cm in length. The space of each seed was 4cm and the growth amount by density was measured through three times. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The total growth amount per unit area was in the order of the third, second and first plots until the second sampling. At the third sampling the whole plots showed almost the same growth amount except the first plot which showed a slightly smaller amount. 2) The growth amount per individual plant was in the order of the third, second and first plots until the second sampling, while the first plot showed drastic growth compared with the other two plots at the third sampling. 3) The growth amount by each organ(leaf, stem and root) of the plant body was markedly abundant in the stem of the non-productive part compared with that in the leaf of the productive part. Especially the root was affected remarkably by density and the first plot showed an abundant growth in comparison with the other plots which were too poor to resist the gound surface.

  • To Study the eruption pattern of the maxillary first permanent molar, the author took 266 cases of true lateral cephalogram (Male; 137 cases, Female; 129 cases) from 3 to 7 years old children and observed the vertical change and axial change. The following results were obtained: 1. The angle of axial inclination of the maxillary first permanent molar to the F-H plane increased gradually from age 3 to 7, except for age 6 in both sexes. There was a slight reversal of this motion at age 6. 2. The distance from the cusp of the maxillary first permanent molar to the occlusal plane slightly decreased from age 3 to 5, and rapidly decreased from age 5 in both sexes. 3. The change of angle of the axial inclination resulted in the distance from the distobuccal cusp of the maxillary first permanent molar to the occlusal plane decreasing more than that from the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first permanent molar to the occlusal plane in both sexes. 4. The eruption of the maxillary first permanent molar generally was found to be earlier in girls than boys.
