  • The present study is a descriptive study to investigate nurses’perception of barriers to research utilization. A total of 274 participants in this study consisted of registered nurses working in a large, urban and academic medical center. A questionnaire packet containing the Barriers Scale, and a demographic profile was distributed to nurses and they were asked to return the packet to a return-box in the Nursing Office after completion. The greatest barrier was insufficient time on the job to implement new ideas. Next was ‘implications for practice are not made clear'. Also the item of the English language in research articles was considered to be the ninth barrier. The greatest mean score of each of the sub-scales was the communication factor. The were followed by the organization, research, and nurse factors. Compared with the means from other studies, the mean scores of the communication and research factors were higher in this study. Nurses who had not taken a class of research methods found the communication and research factors as a higher barrier than those who did. Also, nurses who did not participate in a conference last year perceived the research factor as higher than those who did. It is recommended that English and research classes should be strengthened in educational nursing programs. The researchers should also describe the section of implication for practice as more detail and clearer for the understanding of nurses; Lastly journals in a libraries or online journal systems should be easily accessible.

  • Purpose: To explore the association between sleep and the risk of accidental injury at school among Korean adolescents. Methods: From the database of the Ninth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS), the researcher selected 63,307 adolescents who responded to a survey on sleep hours. We conducted logistic regression with sleep duration and fatigue after sleep as independent variables, the risk of injury at school as a dependent variable, and gender, grade, school type, economic status, parents' education level, number of participations in physical education, and current smoking and drinking as control variables. Results: Using 9 hours of sleep as the reference, the adjusted injury risk (odds ratio) was 1.74 for those sleeping less than 5 hours a day, 1.61 for 5 hours, 1.45 for 6 hours, 1.31 for 7 hours, 1.13 for 8 hours, and 1.40 for 10 hours or longer. The difference between each pair of groups was statistically significant. In this study, injury risk increased as sleep duration decreased and fatigue after sleep increased. Conclusion: The findings suggest that a short nightly duration of sleep and fatigue after sleep can be considered potential risk factorsfor unintentional injuries at school among Korean adolescents.

  • Analysis of multi-physics systems and the visualization of simulation data are crucial and difficult in computational science and engineering. In Korea, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information KISTI developed EDISON, a web-based computational science simulation platform, and it is now the ninth year since the service started. Hitherto, the EDISON platform has focused on providing a robust simulation environment and various computational science analysis tools. However, owing to the increasing issues in collaborative research, data format standardization has become more important. In addition, as the visualization of simulation data becomes more important for users to understand, the necessity of analyzing input / output data information for each software is increased. Therefore, it is necessary to organize the data format and metadata for the representative software provided by EDISON. In this paper, we analyzed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) simulation software in the field of mechanical engineering where several physical phenomena (fluids, solids, etc.) are complex. Additionally, in order to visualize various simulation result data, we used existing web visualization tools developed by third parties. In conclusion, based on the analysis of these data formats, it is possible to provide a foundation of multi-physics and a web-based visualization environment, which will enable users to focus on simulation more conveniently.

  • Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It is also the forth most abundant structural metal after aluminum, iron and magnesium. Titanium is conventionally produced by the Kroll process. New processes to produce metallic titanium have been currently developed by many researchers in the world. In this study, the existing technologies, including both commercial and developmental processes, categorized into three groups: those by metallothermic reduction of $TiCl_4$ and $TiO_2$, those by electrolytic reduction of $TiO_2$ and hydrogen reduction of Ti compounds. Their mechanisms for reduction and their features are summarized and discussed in the view of industrial application.

  • Large Midwest university faculty members proposed the Science and Technology Enhancement Program Project (STEP) to improve students' learning in the secondary mathematics classroom using modules of inquiry-based teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the STEP Project on students' attitude toward mathematics. Hierarchical linear models (HLM) were used to evaluate the impact of the STEP Project. The sample group for the study was 130 ninth grade students enrolled in Integrated Algebra I in a large urban school district. The school was one of eight secondary schools that participated in the STEP Project. The classes in the treatment group were three of five classes ordered in terms of the highest, middle, and lowest mean GPA. The control group consisted of two other middle GPA classes. The classes had an average of 25 students. Teachers who previously had been involved in the STEP Project taught all treatment and control classes. The inquiry-based teaching activities provided by the project were confined to the treatment classes. The survey measuring students' attitudes toward mathematics were obtained for both groups of students. The inquiry-based teaching affected students' attitudes toward mathematics (p < 0.07, ES = 3.07). Especially, students who had preexisting low attitudes toward mathematics were significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.02, ES = 0.02), while the treatment positively affected African American students overall at p < 0.08 (ES = 0.58).
