  • In this study, a method for determining Ramberg-Osgood constants for leak-before-break evaluation was investigated. The Ramberg-Osgood constants were calculated for SA312, TP316, and SA-508 Gr.1a in an operating temperature of $316^{\circ}C$. Incremental plasticity, using stress-strain data obtained from experiment, and deformation plasticity, using the Ramberg-Osgood constants, were considered in a finite element analysis. Using incremental plasticity and deformation plasticity, J-integrals and crack opening displacement values were calculated and compared. By comparing the results of incremental plasticity and deformation plasticity, a suitable method for determining Ramberg-Osgood constants for leak-before-break evaluation was confirmed.

  • The new p-version crack model is proposed to estimate the stress intensity factors of the thick cracked plate under flexure. The proposed model is based on high order theory and $C^{\circ}$-plate element including shear deformation. The displacements fields are defined by integrals of Legendre polynomials which can be classified into three groups such as basic mode, side mode and internal mode. The computer implementation allows arbitrary variations of p-level Up to a maximum value of 10. The stress intensity factors are computed by virtual crack extention approach. The effects of ratios of thickness to crack length(h/a), crack length to width(a/W) and boundary conditions are investigated. Very good agreement with the existing solution in the literature are shown for the uncracked plate as well as the cracked plate.

  • Anti-oxidation and flame resistant polyurethane nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and aluminum hydroxide addition. Electrospinning was carried out under the following procedure conditions; applied voltage, 20 kV; polymer solution feeding rate, 1.2 ml/h; collector rolling speed, 120 rpm; and tip to collector distance, 15 cm. Aluminum hydroxide was added to the prepared polymer solution for electrospinning to enhance the oxidation and flame resistant properties. The thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis to determine the polymer decomposition temperature, integral procedure decomposition temperature, final decomposition temperature, and remaining amount after thermal decomposition. The activated energy for polymer degradation was also investigated using the Horowitz-Metzger equation. The activation energy increased to more than 50%. The thermal properties of the polyurethane nanofibers were improved by a hydration reaction during the thermal decomposition of aluminum hydroxide around $300{\sim}500^{\circ}C$.

  • The kinetics of the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste polyurethane (PU) according to oxygen concentration has been studied using a non-isothermal thermogravimetric technique at several heating rates from 10 to $50^{\circ}C/min$. A kinetic model accounting for the effects of the oxygen concentration by the differential and integral method based on Arrhenius equation was proposed to describe the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste PU. To obtain the information on the kinetic parameters such as activation energy, reaction order, and pre-exponential factor, the thermogravimetric analysis curves and its derivatives have been analyzed using the kinetic analysis method proposed in this work. From this work, it was found that reaction orders for oxygen concentration had a negative sign, and activation energy decreased as the oxygen concentration increased. It was also found that the kinetic parameters obtained from the integral method using the single heating rate experiments varied with heating rates. Therefore, it is thought that the differential method using the multiple heating rate experiments more effectively represents the thermal-oxidative decomposition of waste polyurethane.

  • Defect assessment of a weld zone is important in fitness-for-service evaluation of plant components. Typically a J and $C^*$ estimation method for a defective homogeneous component is extended to a mismatched component, by incorporating the effect due to the strength mismatch between the weld metal and the base material. The key element is a mismatch limit load. For instance, the R6/R5 procedure employs an equivalent material concept, defined by a mismatch limit load. A premise is that if a proper mismatch limit load solution is available, the same concept can be used for any defect location (either a weld centre defect or a heat affected zone (HAZ) defect) and for any material combination (either two-material or multi-material combinations; either similar or dissimilar joints). However, validation is still limited, and thus a more systematic investigation is needed to generalise the suggestion to any geometry, any defect location and any material combination. This paper describes the effect of structural geometry on the $C^*$ integral for defective similar welds, based on systematic elastic-creep 2-D and 3-D finite element (FE) analyses, to attempt to elucidate the questions given above. It is found that the existing 'equivalent material' concept is valid only for limited cases, although it provides conservative estimates of $C^*$ for most of cases. A modification to the existing equivalent material concept is suggested to improve accuracy.

  • The phase change of $(U_{1-x}Nd_x)_3O_8$ powder produced by oxidation of Nd-doped $UO_2$ pellet at $500^{\circ}C$ was investigated by high temperature oxidation heat treatment at $900{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ under an air atmosphere. The XRD analysis results showed that the formation of $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ phase and $U_3O_8$ phase from metastable $(U,Nd)_3O_8$ phase initiated at a temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$. The relative integrated intensity of $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ phase to $U_3O_8$ phase increased with increasing of the oxidation temperature from 1100 to $1500^{\circ}C$. And also, it was found from the SEM observation that the particle size of $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ phase increased with increasing of the oxidation temperature. However, electrone probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA) analysis results showed that Nd contents in $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ phase decreased with increasing of the oxidation temperature. This behavior on the ground of XRD, SEM, and EPMA analysis data could be interpreted in terms of the transportation of U ions from $U_3O_8$ phase into $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ phase through the interface of two phases during high temperature oxidation.

  • The thermal decomposition of low density polyethylene(LDPE) and $25\%{\~}48\%$ chlorinated polyethylene(CPE) were studied using a dynamic thermogravimetry in the stream of nitrogen gas with 20ml/min. The mathematic method, differential (Friedman) and Integral (Ozawa) method were used to obtain value of activation energy of decomposition energy on the reaction. The activation energies evaluated by the above methods agree with each other very well. The maximum average activation energy calculated was 71.71kcal/mol. The thermal decomposition of LDPE and CPE were considered to be carried out by main chain scission and the thermogravimetric trace curve agree with the theoretical equation.

  • Tensile and fracture toughness tests of the cold-rolled STS 304 steel plate for membrane material of LNG storage tank were performed at wide range of temperatures, 11 IK(boiling point of LNG), 153K , 193K and 293K(room temperature). Tensile strength significantly increases with a decrease in temperature, but the yield strength is relatively insensitive to temperature. Elongation at 193K abruptly decreases by 50% of that at 293K, and then decreases slightly in the temperature range of 193K to 111K. Strain hardening exponents at low temperatures are about four times as high as that at 293K. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_c$) and tearing modulus($T_{mat}$) tend to decrease with a decrease in temperature. The $J_c$ values are inversely related to effective yield strength in the temperature range of 111K to 293K. These phenomena result from a significant increase in the amount of transformed martensite in low temperature regions.
