CHARACTERIZATION OF MAGNETIZATION BEHAVIOR IN Co/Pd PERPENDICULAR ANISOTROPIC MULTILAYERS

  • Magnetization behavior of sputter-deposited Co/Pd multilayers were characterized, and it has been found that even when the multilayers are sputtered at low pressure (10 mTorr), the coercivity of the multilayers can be increased to large extent without noticeable change of saturation magnetization by increasing the deposition pressure of Pd underlayer. It turned out that the surface topology of Pd underlayer gets rough as deposition pressure increases, which consequently affects the magnetization reversal mode of Co/Pd multilayers from domain wall motion to magnetic spin rotation. The enhancement of coercivity is attributed to the domain wall pinning effect which is comected with the surface roughness of Pd underlayer on which Co/Pd multilayers grow.

Effective Interdiffusion of Co/Pd multilayers

  • An artificially modulated magnetic Co/Pd multilayer is one of the promising candidates for high density magneto-optic (MO) recording media in the wavelength of a blue laser beam, due to large Kerr rotation angle. However, since the Co/Pd multilayer is a non-equilibrium state in terms of free energy and MO recording is a kind of thermal recording which is conducted around Curie temperature (Tc) of the recording media, the assessment of the thermal stability in the Co/Pd multilayer is crucially important both for basic research and applications. As the parameter of the thermal stability in this research, effective interdiffusion coefficients (Deff) perpendicular to the interface of the Co/Pd multilayers are measured in terms of Ar sputtering pressure and heat treatment temperature. From the results of the research, we find out that the magnetic exchange energy between Co and Pd sublayers strongly affects Deff of the Co/Pd multilayers. This discovery will provide the understanding of the magnetic exchange energy in the effective interdiffusion process of a magnetic multilayer structure and suggest the operating temperature range for MO recording in the Co/Pd multilayer for the basic research and applications, respectively.

  • 수직자기이방성을 갖는 [Pd/Co] 다층박막으로 구성된 스핀밸브 구조에서 비자성층(space layer, SL) Pd 또는 Cu의 두께와 다층박막의 반복층수 N에 따른 자기저항효과의 의존성을 연구하였다. 비자성층을 Pd보다 Cu로 사용하였을 때 더 큰 자기저항비를 얻었다. 그리고 Cu층과 고정층 사이에 Co층을 삽입하는 경우 약 3배가량 자기저항비가 증가하는 것을 관찰하였다. $Ta_{(2.1nm)}/[Pd_{(0.61)}/Co_{(0.23)}]_4/Cu_{(2.37)}/Co_{(t)}/[Pd_{(0.61)}/Co_{(0.23)}]_2/FeMn_{(10.6)}/Ta_{(2.1)}$ 구조에서 삽입된 Co층의 두께가 0.62nm 또는 1.01nm에서 최대의 자기저항비 7.4%를 얻었다.

  • 수직자기 기록매체를 위해 스퍼터링법으로 Co/Pd 및 Co/Pt 다층막을 형성하였으며 Pd 및 Pt 바닥층의 증착 압력이 다층막의 자화거동 및 보자력에 미치는 영향에 대해 연구하였다. Co/Pd 다층막의 경우 보자력이 바닥층의 증착 압력에 매우 민감하여 바닥층 증착압력만을 조절함으로써 보자력을 크게 증가시킬 수 있었으나 Co/Pt 경우 바닥층의 증착압력 조절에 의한 보자력 증대효과는 미미하였다. 바닥층의 종류 및 증착압력에 따른 다층막의 보자력 변화를 바닥층의 표면 거칠기 및 다층막 증착착시의 계면상태 변화의 측면에서 설명할 수 있었으며 이는 바닥층의 증착압력의 증가에 따른 다층막의 수직이방성 에너지 감소 및 자화반전 기구의 변화와도 연관시킬 수 있었다. 다층막의 Kerr 회전각은 바닥층의 종류 및 증착압력에는 거의 의존하지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

Annealing Effect of Co/Pd Multilayers on Magnetic Properties During Interdifusion

However, since multilayer structure, as well as amorphous structure, is a non-equilibrium state in terms of free energy and a MO recording technology is a kind of thermal recording which is conducted around Curie temperature (Tc) of the recording media, when the Co/Pd mulilayer is used for the MO recording media, changes in the magnetic properties are occurred as the amorphous structure do. Therefore, the assessment of the magnetic properties in the Co/Pd multilayer during interdiffusion is crucially important both for basic research and applications. As the parameter of the magnetic properties in this research, saturation magnetization and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy of the Co/Pd multilayer are measured in terms of Ar sputtering pressure and heat treatment temperature. Form the results of the research, we find out that the magnetic exchange energy between Co and Pd sublayers strongly affects the changes in the magnetic properties of the Co/Pd multilayers during the interdiffusion in ferromagnetic state. This discovery will provide the understanding of the magnetic exchange energy in the Co/Pd multilayer structure and suggest the operating temperature range for MO recording in the Co/Pd multilayer for the basic research and applications, respectively.
