Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including nitric oxide (NO), could be associated with the pathogenesis of various diseases such as cancer and chronic inflammation. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are known to play key roles in the development of these diseases. Cedrela sinensis leaves have been used in Asian countries as a traditional remedy for enteritis, dysentery and itching. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of Cedrela sinensis leaves in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Powder of C. sinensis leaves was extracted with 95% ethanol and fractionated with a series of organic solvents including n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water. The dichloromethane (DCM) fraction strongly inhibited NO production possibly by down-regulating iNOS and COX-2 expression, as determined by Western blotting. Hydrogen peroxide-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was also effectively inhibited by the DCM fraction from C. sinensis leaves. In addition, C. sinensis inhibited LPS-mediated p65 activation via the prevention of IκB-$\alpha$ phosphorylation. Furthermore, mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) such as ERK 1/2 and p38 were found to affect the expression of iNOS and COX-2 in the cells. Taken together, our data suggest that leaves of C. sinensis could be used as a potential source for anti-inflammatory agents.
Seven antioxidative flavonoids were isolated from Jindalrae flowers (Rhododendron mnonulatum Turcz.), an edible plant in Korea. These compounds were identified as afzelin, ampelopsin, catechin, myricetin, myricitrin, quercetin and quercitrin on the basis of IR, UV, FAB-MS, $^1H\;NMR,\;and\;^{13}C\;NMR$ data. These compounds were consisted of two flavonols, three flavonol glycosides, a flavane, and a dihydroflavonol. The flavonol glycosides (14.4 g) present in th ethyl ether and ethyl acetate fractions comprised up to 82% of their total flavonoid amount (17.6 g) finally recovered by means of polyamide C-200 column chromatography, preparative TLC, recrystallization, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The antioxidant activities were measured in an ethanol solution of linoleic acid in the presence of ferric thiocyanate. The antioxidant efficiency increased in the order of afzrlin<$\alpha-tocopherol$

PbS, CuS and (Pb,Cu)S thin films were chemically deposited on glass from alkaline baths containing lead acetate, copper chloride, thiourea and triethanolamine. The deposition, optical, resistivity and thermal electric properties of these films were studied. PbS thin films showed a hexagonal structure and CuS thin films showed amorphous. The crystalline of (Pb,Cu)S thin films was obtained by heat treatment at 200$\^{C}$ and the deposition ratio of Pb to Cu showed 7:3. The energy gap of PbS, CuS and (Pb,Cu)S thin films were 1.7, 2.1 and 2.4 eV, respectively. Sheet resistance of PbS thin films was less affected on thermal annealing, but hose of (Pb,Cu)S and CuS thin films were more reduced about 3 orders of magnitude. All of those thin films indicated p type semiconductor in temperature ranging 30$\^{C}$ to 150$\^{C}$.
In order to obtain basic data for utilization of the aerial parts of Cnidium officinale Makino (APCO), the antioxidant properties of the aerial parts and rhizomes of C. officinale were measured using DPPH and ABTS radicals, and nitrite scavenging assays. The ethyl acetate (EA) fraction prepared from the aerial parts of APCO showed the strongest antioxidant activities, and contained high level of total phenolic compounds (325.81 mgTE/g) and flavonoids (259.16 mgRE/g). The concentrations for 50% reductions ($RC_{50}$) values of the DPPH and ABTS radicals, and nitrite by the EA fraction of APCO were $11.27\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $14.34\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, and $10.26\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively. APCO exhibited approximately 3-9 times higher antioxidant activity than rhizomes of C. officinale. The antioxidant capacities of APCO were positively correlated with its total phenolic contents. Therefore, it was concluded that the aerial parts of C. officinale can be a useful and cost-effective source of natural antioxidant for food or cosmetics.
The effect of three varying ratios (high, medium and low) of Rumen Degradable Protein (RDP) to Undegradable Dietary Protein (UDP) of 37:63, 52:48 and 70:30 in iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric concentrate mixtures on rumen fermentation profile was studied using rumen fistulated Jersey crossbred cows. Rumen pH and ammonia nitrogen concentration were found to be lower with a concentrate mixture containing a higher UDP level of 63.38% when compared with those having medium and low UDP levels of 47.55 and 29.75%, respectively, at all post feeding intervals. Total volatile fatty acid concentration as well as concentrations of individual fatty acids viz., acetate, propionate and butyrate were also found higher in animals fed concentrate mixture with the highest UDP level.
Total and esterified cholesterol content was determined in the rat administered animal and vegetable proteins for 16 weeks. The cholesterol biosynthetic activity of the liver was also measured in these rats by the $acetate-C^{14}$ incorporation rate. The results obtained were as follows. (1) Serum total cholesterol content was increased by the administration of animal proteins and decreased by that of vegetable proteins. (2) Liver cholesterol content was increased by animal proteins and decreased by at of vegetable proteins. (3) Cholesterol biosynthetic activity of the liver was increased by the animal proteins and decreased by the vegetable proteins.
Fifty isolates of myxobacteria were isolated from soils from several areas in Korea during 1996-1997 and bioactivity against plant pathogenic fungi of these isolates was examined. A myxobacterial isolate KR025 showed good antifungal activities against Pyricularia oryzae, Cryphonectria parasitica, Colletotrichum lagenarium, and C. gloeosporioides but did not against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Pythium ultimum. The bacterium was identified as Myxococcus fulvus based on morphological and physiological characteristics. Antifungal substances were extracted from culture broth and bacterial cell of Myxococcus fulvus KR025 by ethyl acetate. Antifungal substance of Myxothiazole (100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/ml) produced by Myxococcus fulvus KR 025 controlled 97.0% rice blast, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust, and barley powdery mildew and showed 45.0 and 82.6% disease control of rice sheath blight and cucumber gray model, respectively.
Bacterial specs isolated from common scab lesion on potato (Solanum tuberosum L. c.. Dejima) tuber was identified as Streptomyces turgidiscabies. This organism had flexuous spore chains and grey spore mass color, produced melanin pigment on ISP 7, but did not produce on ISP 6. S. turgidiscabies grew on agar media at pH 4.5, used L-arabinose, D-fructose, D-glucose, D-mannitol, raffinose, rhamnose, sucrose, D-xylose and meso-inositol as carbon sources, and was susceptible to 7% NaCl, thallium acetate (10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), crystal violet (0.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), phenol (0.1%, wt/vol), oleandomycin (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), and streptomycin (20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml).
The oral admistration of deer horn extract was proved to cause a considerable amelioration to the impairment of hepatic oxidative phosphorylation and to the decrease of ATP content in liver tissue induced by cholesterol ingestion. Deer horn extract was shown to accelerate considerably incorporation of $acetate-1-C^{14}$ into cholesterol in liver tissue and it tends to restore a decrease of GOT activity of liver tissue, caused by cholesterol administration. Histological examination showed that deer horn extract had a remakable preventive effect aginst fatty infiltration of organgs such as liver, heart, spleen, and adrenal gland of cholesterol given rabbits.
