  • Tenebrio molitor larvae contain large amounts of proteins, lipids and other functional materials, enabling this insect to be used as an edible food source in animal feeds and for industrialization. Although many efforts have been made to set up mass rearing systems, few studies have been conducted to establish optimal rearing conditions for the production of high quality T. molitor larvae. Herein we investigated 1) the effects of additional diets on the survival and fecundity of the insect, 2) the relationship between oviposition period and the uniformity of larval size, 3) the effects of rearing density and temperature on insect development, and 4) the storage stability of eggs and pupae at low temperatures given possible temporary production discontinuation. The addition of carrot and zucchini to the traditional wheat bran diet significantly increased the survival and fecundity rate of adult T. molitor. Of the three different oviposition sampling periods (3, 7, and 14 days) used to investigate the uniformity of the hatched larvae in each treatment, the period of 3 and 7 days provided higher uniformity than the 14 days oviposition period. Larval development was faster at $30^{\circ}C$ than at 20, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$. Interestingly, oviposition rates were highest at $20^{\circ}C$ but showed much slower larval development and lower uniformity at $30^{\circ}C$. Regarding the effect of larval rearing densities (1, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 larvae per 90 mm diam. dish), larval weight was significantly reduced at higher rearing densities, but larval longevity and length were not influenced by rearing density. The 30 larvae/dish is suggested to be a reasonable density to be applied to mass production systems. When kept at $4^{\circ}C$, T. molitor eggs showed a significant reduction in hatching rate; however, when stored under the same conditions, pupae emergence rates remained high until 10 weeks, suggesting that storage at low temperatures is more suitable for the pupal stage than the egg stage. Our findings suggest that an increase in T. molitor adult survival and fecundity rates and a uniformity of hatched larval development can be achieved with the following recommendations: a combination diet (including wheat bran), a 7-day oviposition period; a larvae-rearing temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, a rearing density of 30 larvae/dish, and the storage of pupal stages at low temperatures in the case of rearing discontinuation. This study serves as a strong foundation for the successful mass production of high quality T. molitor larvae.

  • Chemical pesticides have been used to control persimmon pests, however the overuse of the pesticides caused insect resistance, followed by failure in pest management and residual problems. Herein we investigate the potential of eco-friendly organic pesticides (EFOP) on the control persimmon pests, Stathmopoda masinissa (persimmon fruit moth) and Riptortus pedestris (bean bug). Ten commercially available plant-derived organic pesticides and one microbial pesticide were sprayed on the target insects in laboratory conditions. The chemical pesticide, buprofezin+dinotefuran wettable powder served as a positive control. In the first bioassay against persimmon fruit moth, alternatively Plutella xylostella larvae were used due to the lack of persimmon fruit moth population from fields, and three organic pesticides showed high control efficacy, such as pyroligneous liquor (EFOP-1), the mixture of Chinese scholar tree extract, goosefoot and subtripinnata extracts (EFOP-2) and Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. aizawai NT0423 (EFOP-11). When the three selected organic pesticides were treated on the persimmon fruit moths, the EFOP-2 treatment showed the highest control efficacy: 27.7% (5 days), 13.3% (7 days) and 6.7% (10 days) of survival rates. In the bioassay against bean bugs, the mixture of Chinese scholar tree, goosefoot and subtripinnata extracts (EFOP-2 and EFOP-9) and the extracts of sophora and derris (EFOP-10) showed high control efficacy, particularly the highest in the treatment of EFOP-2: 20.0% (5 days) and 16.7% (10 days) of survival rates. These results suggest that the mixture of Chinese scholar tree, goosefoot and subtripinnata extracts (EFOP-2) has high and multiple potential in the management of the persimmon pests.

  • "GukMinSoHakDokBon", published in 1895, is the first national textbook designated by the Education Institute. Ten of the 41 chapters consist of scientific contents. In this thesis, some the contents are reviewed in detail and studied to see what significance it has in view of science education. The scientific contents described in "GukMinSoHakDokBon" include Plants Change, Clock, Camels, Wind, Hive, Respiration, Crocodiles, Nature of Animals, and Chemical Elements. For that kind of diversity, it was told that "GukMinSoHakDokBon" was not considered for normal students, and there were many ambiguities due to in sufficient explanations. Some of the contents were even technically wrong. So it has been noted that the scientific contents of "GukMinSoHakDokBon" have more significance in providing new information at that time but not in understanding newly-organized scientific knowledge. However, it is obvious that the early science education in Korea is composed of the methods of reading "GukMinSoHakDokBon". This is a common figure, which can be found in "Willson's Reader", the elementary reading textbook in the U.S. in the 1860's or "小學讀本" by the Ministry of Education in Japan. One thing remarkable is "GukMinSoHakDokBon" induced students' interests through the use of storytelling method for introducing some unfamiliar scientific knowledge. There is no doubt that "GukMinSoHakDokBon" has a very positive role in increasing students interest and intelligence. These advantages are being actively applied in the present model of storytelling education these days. Therefore, "GukMinSoHakDokBon" can be regarded as both a language textbook and an early figure in science education, and it can be also considered that "GukMinSoHakDokBon" has a significance not only in approaching scientific substances theoretically but in using storytelling methods to deliver unfamiliar and strange knowledges to students.

  • This study approached the concept of practical or praxis in Family and Consumer Science based on the review of the concept of phronesis in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle divided human soul into rational part and irrational part. A virtue related with rational part is intellectual virtue and a virtue related with irrational part is moral virtue. Rational part is divided into calculative part and scientific part. Phronesis is one of an intellectual virtue in calculative part of soul. Aristotle defines phronesis as a state of soul that issues in praxis. Phronesis in narrow sense is a virtue which leads to praxis and it is differ from either sophia or techne. Phronesis in broad sense it includes both praxis and poiesis. Phronesis is closely related with moral virtue. Because moral virtues are habits according to right reason, hence right reasons should be considered, and this is intellectual virtue. It is called for attention that what the concept of practical or praxis in Family and Consumer Science Education should be for the determination of the relation with Practical Arts and Technology. This study proposed a tentative conceptualization of praxis and phronimos in context of Family and Consumer Science Education.clothing planning and the most categories(83.3%) had connections of repetitions. • This study focuses on the appropriate planting soil for Vitex rotundifolia by planting soil. Different soil depth levels were achieved at 15cm and 25cm in the green roof module system that was created with woody materials for a $500{\times}500{\times}300mm$ area. The soil mixture ratio was $S_{10}$, $L_{10}$, $S_7L_3$, $S_5L_5$, $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$. This study was carried out over five months between April and September, 2006. The amount of soil moisture tends to decrease according to the planting soil. For the experimental items $S_{10}$, $S_7L_3$ and $S_5L_5$, the amount of soil moisture tends to decrease rapidly. However, for the experimental items $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$, conditions containing perlite and peat moss, the amount of moisture tends to decrease more gradually. As a result, the use of soil-improving amending for the afforestation planting of roofs with a low level of management is need. After experimenting with the ratio of soil mixture for Vitex rotundifolia, the planting soil for experimental item $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$ appeared excellent. For experimental item $S_{10}$, the growth of Vitex rotundifolia seemed to be weaker than that of others, because of the low levels of moisture and organic matter in the soil. For experimental item $L_{10}$, there appeared to be a low level of growth, even when the levels of moisture and organic matter were high. This may have occurred because of the low level of soil pH and the excessive amount of exchangeable cation. At the depth of 25cm, the growth of Vitex rotundifolia is vigorous overall. For experimental item at 15cm, Vitex rotundifolia was able to survive for 14 days without any rainfall and Vitex rotundifolia was better in amended soil, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$, than natural soil, SL.

  • Bangseonmun(訪仙門) is the attractive spots where Shinseon(神仙: Taoist hermit) ideas that makes Mt. Younju(瀛洲山) or the current Mt. Halla mystique has still remained and situated at Hancheon(漢川) Valley. Bangseonmun, which is known as 'Landscape Setting Here($L_{SH}$)' of Youngguchunhwa(瀛丘春花), which is one of ten famous spots in Youngjusipkyung(瀛洲十景), and Deulreonggui refer to 'the gate to the place where Shinseon is living.' It is described as the path to Mt. Youngju for Shinseon and the boundary between the mundane world and the world beyond the mundane. The old scholars at Mt. Halla entered the gate and met Shinseon, carving the word or picture of Bangseonmun, Whanseonmun, Wuseondae or Deungyounggu so as to structure the enchanting image on Bangseonmun. It is the poetic expression of the taste for the arts, breaking from the troublesome mundane world and riding the white deer to become the Shinseon, the desire for the ideal world in Taoism, and the identity of four famous scenic spots of Bangseonmun. Besides its enchanting meaning and the locational value of Bangseonmun, geological features of the valley and river and ecological value prove its unique value as a natural scenic beauty. Not to mention the locational identity and enchanting meaning of the poets carved in Meeaegak of Bangseonmun and the scenic view of 'Youngguchunhwa' as the subject of 10 famous scenes of Youngju, it is the place for communing with nature with the natural beauty of Bangseonmun Valley. As the cultural place for being together with Jeju people, it simultaneously shows the typical model as a scenic spot in our living. Viewing the scenic value and standard from the aspect of the Cultural Properties Protection Law, Bangseonmun Valley in Jeju must be the typical place and space that meet the requirements to become scenic sites.

  • Development and reproduction of the sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci(B biotype) were investigated under different temperatures and host plants. Developmental periods from egg to pre-adult of whiteflies measured under four constant temperatures: they were 86.2 days at $15^{\circ}C$ and 17.0 days at $30^{\circ}C$. Lower threshold temperature and total effective temperature for the development of egg and nymph, and for the complete development (egg to emergence) were $10.1,\;11.6,\;11.1^{\circ}C$ and 110.3, 204.7, 317.3 degree days, respectively. The hatching and emergence rates were 87.0% at $25^{\circ}C$ and 76.7% at $20^{\circ}C$, which were higher than the results of other temperatures. The adult longevity was 23.6 and 14.0 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The highest average fecundity per female was 103.3 at $25^{\circ}C$. But there were no significant differences among the temperatures. The highest intrinsic rate of natural increase($r_{m}$) was 0.196 at $30^{\circ}C$ and the highest net reproduction rate ($R_{o}$) was 97.33 at $25^{\circ}C$. Developmental periods from egg to pre-adult of whiteflies were 21.2 on the tomato, 28.1 on red pepper, 22.2 on eggplant and 25.5 days on poinsetia. The hatching was highest (90.3%) on red paper and emergence rate was highest (89.6%) on eggplant. The longest longevity of adult female was 26.5 days on eggplant, and the average fecundity per female was greater on tomato and eggplant than on other host plants. The intrinsic rate of natural increase($r_{m}$) was the highest on tomato as 0.165 and the net reproduction rate ($R_{o}$) was the highest on eggplant as 106.1. As a result, the optimum range of temperature for the growth of B. tabaci was between $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, and the optimum host plant were tomato and eggplant among the plants tested.
