  • Here, we present an updated checklist based on voucher specimens of vascular plants for Gasan Mt. which is located in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The list includes 322 taxa in 212 genera and 81 families of vascular plants, of which 14 are endemic, six are rare plants, 48 are floristic target species, and 14 are considered naturalized in Korea. Based on voucher specimens, Gasan Mt. was the southern limit of Cimicifuga heracleifolia var. bifida Nakai and Iris odaesanensis Y. N. Lee on the Korean peninsula. Moreover, we confirmed a hybrid plant deriving from two Iris parents, I. minutoaurea Makino and I. odaesanensis, in a mountain fortress of Gasan Mt. We also present online databases including 325 voucher specimens deposited at the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM; http://oasis.kiom.re.kr/herblib). This study has great significance as the first floristic study of Korean plants sharing virtual specimens online.

  • The Korean medicinal plant name written in Chinese script, Jingyo, is somewhat confusingly used in the Korean modern literature. This name was assigned to at least three species, with examples being Gentiana macrophylla, Aconitum pseudolaeve, and Justicia procumbens. To clarify the taxonomic identity of Jingyo, these names were examined based on the Chinese classics and Korean classics and compared them with the modern flora of both China and Korea. In China, Jingyo was considered as Justicia gendarussa or Gentiana macrophylla. In Korea, Jingyo was considered as A. pseudolaeve or J. procumbens. However, it was concluded that Jingyo is not distributed on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, although the Hangeul name Jinbeom was the result of the misreading of the Chinese script Jinbong, another Chinese term for Jingyo, this name is used in many modern studies related plant taxonomy. Hence, we also propose Jinbeom as the conserved Hangeul name of A. pseudolaeve.

  • Korea national arboretum has worked with the plant taxonomic society of Korea to make the first fully electronic floristic checklist in Korea. The result is an ever-expanding online plant name index containing scientifically authorative, up-to-date information on the approximately 7,000 taxa including cultivars. With 37 contributing taxonomists, KPNI is the largest collaborative research projects ever assembled in Korea. A comprehensive database model for the taxonomic data from literature and other sources is presented, which was devised for the Korea National Plant Index database project (KPNI). Gwangreung database model is based on an approach using entity-relationsip diagram. It encompasses taxa of all ranks, nothotaxa and hybrid formulae, cultivars, full synonymy, basionyms, Korean name, and other nomenclatural information. Ths paper presents an analysis of KPNI work processes and an overview how we are approaching the construction of Gwangreung databaese model. It can help the system engineers of other biological information systems to develop their database based on the accurate and integrative taxonomic database.

  • This study introduces the bryological history and literature of the Korean Peninsula. The French missionary Urban Faurie was the first person to collect Korean bryophytes at the beginning of the 20th century. Most of his bryophyte collections from Korea were studied and recorded by Jules Cardot (for mosses) and by Franz Stephani (for liverworts). Japanese studies of Korean bryophytes were described in chronological order. Hong Won Shic and Choe Du Mun carried out an inventory and flora research on bryophytes in South Korea. The most recent bryological studies of North Korea are also reviewed here as a reference.

  • This study had been performed to clarify the distribution of specific plants and hydrophytes in the 27 sites of drainage basins located in Youngsan River at the period of June 1997 to July 1999. Hydrophytes were composed of 32 familis 86 species and hygrophytes 36 familis 135 species. Among hydrophytes, emerged plant, floating-leaved plant, submerged plants and free floating hydrophytes were 52, 15, 12, and 7 species respectively in this investigation. Threatened species were Drosera rotundifolia, Utricularia racemosa, Utricularia bifida, Utricularia japonica, Hydrocharis dubia, Endangered species were Brasenia schreberi and Euryale ferox.

  • The objective of this study was to quantitatively measure the changes in radon concentration due to ventilation and air purification plants in the lower and upper floors of a building. This study measured and compared radon concentration in the lower and upper floors of the building by using a radon meter when the room was closed, it was ventilated, and air purification plants were installed at a specific time. One-way ANOVA was conducted to evaluate the effect of treatment (i.e., closure, ventilation, and air purification plants) on radon concentration. The results of this study showed that ventilation and air purification plants significantly decreased radon concentration in the lower and upper floors of the building, but the effect of ventilation and that of air purification plants were not significantly different. Therefore, it will be possible to reduce radon concentration effectively when ventilation and air purification plants are used appropriately.

  • The whole genome sequence was completed in arabidopsis and rice. Large amounts of EST data have been available from many other plants. Also, vast quantities of diverse biological data have been generated by various '-omics' technologies such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Bioinformatics plays an essential role in extracting useful information from these tremendous amounts of biological data. In this review we introduced experimental methods to generate massive data, applications to plant science such as plant disease resistance and molecular breeding and bioinformatics tools and web sites available in plant biotechnology R&D. We concluded that new experimental methods and bioinfomation analysis techniques have made major contributions to the development of plant biotechnology and that bioinformatics has become a critical factor in plant biotechnology R&D.
